213 - Hit by a Narrowboat on the Leek Branch

Күн бұрынAfter our disappointing cruise on the Caldon Canal we head back to Hazlehurst Junction and turn down the Leek Branch. It is short and shallow and bendy and very quiet, apart from that one boat that hit us!
We make it to the end of the line and tick off another Silver Propeller location.

Q. Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A. We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

little advice about the oatcake the best way to do it is bacon sausage and melted cheese and a squirt of brown sauce yum yum your here in my home town so I should know you defo need to try this Michael you will love it happy boating guys . S C.

I did try the melted cheese variety... not entirely sure what’s in a brown sauce. As I’m a veggie the bacon sausage is right out, I’m afraid! M

Anyone who says they haven’t left a paddle open is probably in denial. We certainly have, mistakes happen. We got hit both ways through the braunston tunnel last week and again on the north oxford. Oh well it happens. Looks a lovely canal but a bit narrow

Just put up a vlog of the Trent in flood when it was in the orange - it wasn't easy and used loads of fuel the currents were ridiculous so I still think it's better to be safe than sorry. Oatcakes are scrummy, when I had a cafe in the Derbyshire Dales we made them and sold them by the bucket load- great for a breakfast for their slow release energy. Take care no more bumps I hope.

We agree. Oatcakes are better than pizza - and we love pizza! We've developed a pretty good recipe for oatcakes (modified a recipe we found online). We've also discovered how to make our own clotted cream! A little bit of Staffordshire in the mountains of Utah!

@@MinimalList The key is to get the batter almost to the consistency of water. When you think you've ruined it and it's too thin, it's almost thin enough. If interested, I'll post our recipe.

As if you didn't know, the boat that hit you was a hire boat from the yard that did your blacking (and where we got our boat - twice!) Oh the irony. (And a hire boater, I am embarrassed to see. If I had a boater vlog, I would be 'Enthusiastic Hire Boater.') At the beautifully manicured turn when you mentioned the beautiful views they must have, we picked up a whole travel blanket in the prop and had to plunge around in the weed hatch for half an hour. We loved the Caldon, we loved the Trent & Mersey, the Shroppie and the whole 4 Counties Ring - we are envious.

We got run up the bank and grounded out, which when you draw 18" is quite a challenge, all the adults where in the bow with 2 teenages at the helm, they went wrong way then like yours changed at last moment, while 1 dived into the cabin, the helmsman suddenly checked her phone. I used a few anglo-saxon words of encouragement while she pretended to not know we where there, quite an performance as I was pushing on thier taff rail at the time.

I've never had a PizzaCake Michael :-) :-) but I do like Pizza but can't remember ever having any Oatcakes. Full marks for the correct sign-off Mike and Jo, not being funny with this but I have had the impression that there is quite a bit to learn and memorise about Locking the sequence seem to be a bit difficult? My better half thinks I am nuttier than a fruit cake, laughing at the screen complete with headphones on!

The oatcake is a pretty regional dish... a kind of savory pancake; well worth seeking out if you ever visit Staffordshire. And yeah locking isn’t all that simple... there’s a basic few steps, but lock flights and even individual locks behave quite differently, so you’ve always got to pay attention. Hope your better half’s not too worried about how nutty you’re getting! M

Oatcake pizza sounds fine to me. But then, anything on a great crust and covered in cheese sounds good. Have you two considered learning semaphore? You could make flag holders for George's harness and Jo could grab them as needed. Would add that certain something to your videos.

7:08 Re. the boat hitting you. Playing devil's advocate here... What MAY have happened is: It's a long boat that's coming towards you. As it went to the side of the canal to allow you to pass, the rear of their boat may have caught a shallow part of the canal. This pulls the back of the boat in and this the front of the boat goes the opposite way. I had this happen to me a few times in a 62ft wide-beam boat on the Leeds & Liverpool. It was a complete sod to keep in a straight line when passing shallow sections of the canal as that part gets sucked down and it flings the other end out. I ended up embarrassingly diagonal a few times and usually I can get into a lock without touching either side !

A generous thought, but he was in the center channel and we could see what his prop was doing and where he was pointing the tiller... he first tried to widen the gap gently, saw himself closing instead, then panicked and forgot to point the tiller at what you don’t want to hit. M

@@rwbimbie5854 A common misconception brought on by the presence of 'Cake' in the name :D. Think of them as more robust crepes made from oat batter. They are the food of the gods, especially on the morning after the night before, if you catch my drift :). I'm a cheese and bacon man, myself, when it comes to what you wrap in them but sausage works fine too. Some people have eggs, mushrooms, baked beans or tomatoes added to the mix ... its all good :nods:. Sadly the vast majority of us get them from the supermarkets now and those oatcakes are like flannels compared to the just-cooked-in-front-of-you fare we used to be able to get.

Life for an American in England is pretty good, once you get used to getting corrected in your pronunciation of “aluminum” sometimes several times a day! The weather, I’ll admit, can be a wee bit inconsistent when compared to Arizona (or SoCal, where I spent more time), but it’s not as bad as it’s made out to be. I’m honestly not sure how I’d see England were I not spending so much time on the waterways... it’s a fascinating country but we’re i back in a full time job and having to spend my whole day in London, I might go mad. M

@@MinimalList That brings to mind a decade or two back when I rode with my parents down to Fort Hood, Texas, to visit my brother and his family; at one point Mom & Dad got in to a big argument about which highway to take next & when I looked over the one of them's shoulder at the map, it was one of those highways which combines half a dozen route numbers at a city & they were talking about the same road but calling it by different numbers! Right now I don't remember if I pointed that out to them or just kept my mouth shut until they figured it out.

Thanks for showing us some very beautiful parts of the canal network. Jo, for much of the time that your boat is travelling I will see you and George stretching it out on the towpath. When cruising do you have any idea just how many steps you might take on an average day of cruising? They tell us that walking is one of the best exercises and you must do some miles. Well done. Good for George too LOL. How silly of that other boat to swing in and hit you. Did I hear you say it was a hire boat? So sad that the canal doesn't run to the full length that it used to be. Are there any plans to recover it or is the industrial estate still active and preventing any steps towards recovery?

Jo’s no idea how many steps she takes, but it’s a LOT. Don’t think we said about the boat, but based on the lack of experience steering it may have been. As for Leek, it’s probably permanently disabled... the industrial park is very much in use, and quite heavily developed. M

Instead of sticking your fingers at each other - or waving your arms in frantic panic. Why not spend a few pounds for a cheap walky-talky set? It's been several years since our kids lived with us - but we had a set of walky-talky's that used ear plugs. The kids put a receiver on their belt and if we needed them we just talked into the transmitter. They didn't need to do anything, except leave the ear-bud in one ear. It was a very useful set. I think we spent about $50 at a Walmart store in Texas or California. They are very useful and cheap.

It's difficult to hear/communicate with people on the towpath if you are at the tiller, because of the noise of the engine. People who haven't been on a boat probably don't realise that. Hand signals are always useful but can still be confusing.

Yeah, just past the end of the navigation. It was never a busy canal, apparently it was really just a feeder, so I guess it was easily seen as something to decommission and reclaim the land. Shame. M

Well, first I’m not sure there’s enough filtration in the world ... could take care of all the particulates and bacteria, maybe, but I’m not sure the amount of dissolved soaps and oils and diesel and everything else would come out. M

Minimal List This months waterways world featured just such a system! But at close to £3000 plus ongoing costs for replacement filters I suspect sales will be limited. I'm sure it's effective but I would still hesitate to use water treated this way, having seen all sorts of revolting things floating in the canals over the years.

Do you have any electronic water depth gauge on your boat, or do you do it the old fashioned way ?

No depth gauge, it’d be a bit of an oddity on a canal boat, as the average depth is so low that it’d just look like noise above a straight line. Most of the time on the canals you just use “no bang == deep enough” estimation, and half the time you can see the bottom anyway. On rivers it’d be nicer to have a gauge, but that’s so rare a situation overall that it’s not worth the expense. M

It’s a sort of savory pancake made of oatmeal, flour, and yeast, then fried on a kind of griddle. Often served stuffed with cheese, bacon, and/or sausage, though there are sweet varieties as well. M

Typically we wear them in shot when we’ve put the sun behind the camera to get the best lighting on us. Sometimes we forget to take them off when it’s not too bright. M

Welcome to the channel! She usually walks when we’re not going very long distances, as George prefers the walk and it makes it much easier for Jo to get shots for the vlog. When there’s a much larger stretch with no locks or the towpath is difficult walking she’ll ride. M

Oh wow, that’s pretty cool side by side like that. Yeah from what others have said it was apparently some sort of turntable bridge for a narrow gauge railway that moved some sort of materials around between industrial sites. This side by side makes it much easier to see where the tracks went, but wish I knew more about what was actually being moved about. M

Oatmeal, flour, and yeast apparently. You’ve got to look specifically for the “Staffordshire Oatcake”, as they’re known outside Staffordshire and Cheshire. They’re basically a pancake, but more savory! M

They’re basically large heavy metal or wood plates that cover a hole in the gate and can be lifted out of the way via the action of the crank and gearing. This allows the water level to equalize, eventually freeing the gate up to open. Hope that explains it! M

If by originally you mean where were we born, Jo’s from not far south of London while I was born in Altus, Oklahoma… but while Jo’s family stayed more or less in one place my family moved a lot, so I’m also from Lancaster in California, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and Abbotsford BC up in Canada. M

Pizza then cake, you can not be seriously eating them together, I would like to see you do this, it sounds yucky, by the way after I bought my narrowboat, privately, the side of the narrowboat canal side was not looked at properly, today I see there is a big dent, admittedly it can only be seen when the sun shines, but lesson learned for all you narrowboat buyers out there, check both sides before you buy properly.

Dents do happen. In fact we seem to have been rammed by something the other day (not yet on a video)... not sure how it happened, appears to have happened when we were off the boat, but they do occur. Definitely worth an inspection before purchasing, but not a problem of the steel didn’t crack or spall off on the inside, both of which are quite unlikely. As for the oatcake; it’s more of a pancake than you might be envisaging. It’s a little savory and dense and a bit rubbery, kind of like a triple thick tortilla. M

Why? Would you have to listen to a insurance advisor that dose not get under your particular situation on the canal is it not up to the captain of each narrow boat to decide?

It’s up to the captain within the limits imposed by the navigation authority. It’s the same as an insurance company not covering damages you incur if you drive a car across a flooded road against the orders of police. M

Legal restrictions aside, Insurance policies cover ‘sudden and accidental’ occurrences. Taking your boat onto a flooded river is neither. On the Caldon, the weir at Consall Forge, mere feet above which you need to make a sharp left turn to make it under the railway bridge, is hair-raising enough when the River Churnet is at ‘Green’ level, never mind when it’s running fast. It looks a bit like the lip of Niagara Falls. 😬 Check your policy and the hp of your engine before even thinking about it. Then don’t.

I'm from Derbyshire and I don't know what an oatcake is! 😬(Haven't lived there for years though). I'm not a boater but love watching narrowboat clogs. (Predictor text - vlogs!) but I always wonder what winding holes are - somewhere for boats to do a U-turn? Also, do you have to pay for the water or is it included in the mooring fee? Last question, how does Jo mange to look nice in everything she wears?! T shirts, waterproof coats . . . I'm not jealous Jo, honest! (😬)

I think you have to wander a little closer to Staffordshire to find the true oatcake... it’s basically a pancake made of oatmeal, flour, and yeast. As for winding holes, yes they’re a wider bit of canal where boats can turn about 180 degrees... not exactly a u-turn, more of a 15 point rotation, but similar idea. Water is usually just part of the licensing fee, as they’ve no practical way to meter it out. And lastly she’s just adorable, largely because I like her so much! M
