There was something really satisfying about watching that. Thank you for posting. It had never occurred to me to add paint to a filler mixture. Great idea.

"I better choose the thumbnail for this vid wisely. Don't want the cops kicking the door in" I scratched my head for a quick second and then remembered watching a Vice doco on hard drugs.😂 Thanks for the chuckle and a solution to eradicating any lining paper gaps 👍

Thanks! Is it essential to add paint to the mix it can you get away just with the filler? Especially if you are going to paint it afterwards but aren't sure of what colour paint yet/haven't got the paint yet.

Having used this filler before, and although I haven't mixed paint into it before, in theory, this seems like a stroke of genius. Well done 👍🏽 I used similar filling knives before from screwfix but they rusted very quickly after 1 use. They were not very expensive so didn't lose any sleep over it but I definitely would not mind paying more for some stainless steel ones. I eagerly await your new content Des 😀

Hi there and thanks very much for your comments. The thing about these knives / b;ades is that they're made from carbon steel which is a lot cheaper than stainless steel. Carbon steel will rust and needs to be maintained. Therefore, after each use you just need to clean them and dry with a dry cloth or paper towels. Even if you forget to do this, or if you have old rusty ones, you can bring them back to life by cleaning them with fine sand paper and they'll be good to go next time. This is the best possible way to make a filler to fill in those annoying gaps between lining paper. It's also a wonderful smooth filler which you can use to repair small cracks and uneven painted surfaces on emulsioned walls and ceilings.

Hi there and thanks very much for your kind words of support. There are 3 likely reasons for the bubbles appearing in the first place. 1. the background wasn't sealed properly first 2. the paste was mixed incorrectly (ratio of water to powder) 3. the lining paper wasn't allowed to expand and soak up the adhesive before laying it on wall; or indeed a combination of any of the aforementioned. The main thing is to always seal the wall properly first. I personally use diluted PVA mixed 1:4 or 5 with water. This is your first and best line of defence. Let everything dry out properly. If bubbles don 't go down when dry do NOT paint over these until you've dealt with them first. If that were me I would slice them with a very sharp blade to expose all of the area and then seal them back down using neat PVA and simply push back into place and allow to dry. Some may suggest using border adhesive which will also work great but if you've got pva then just stick with this. If paper bubbles again when painting just repeat. However this will be a little more tricky as you've then got a layer of paint to deal with. Scrape this away and fill using the hard stop filler in the vid. Sand if necessary and paint over. Next time your down the pub Clive - toast the Caveman and spread the word lol. Best wishes, Des

Thank you for this, wouldn't wallpaper over top illiminate gaps?
@21stcenturycaveman33

Hi there. I completely understand your theory and yes, of course, it's possible especially if your paper is thicker and not a very lightweight, delicate affair. However, I personally wouldn't risk it. If you've gone to this amount of trouble you've got to decide whether to take a chance. Also, if you're going over the lining paper with wallpaper you would need to hang the lining paper horizontally and NOT vertically as I have done. If you simply want to paint over the lining paper then they definitely need filling. Thanks for dropping by. ATB, Des

My gaps are 1mm max - do u think il need to fill? Would rather get straight to painting!
@21stcenturycaveman33
@21stcenturycaveman33 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, your first coat of paint should ideally be watered down as the lining paper will absorb it. Thus, you'll almost certainly still see the gaps and these will still need filling. A second coat of undiluted paint might fill the gaps but probably not. Problem is that if the gaps are still visible after 2 coats of paint then you will still need to fill them and then have to put a 3rd coat on which may not have been necessary. My advice is - first coat diluted, fill gaps per my vid, gently sand and apply second coat. This should do it providig you're using a decent quality paint and not your typical cheapo stuff. Hope this helps, Des

If you are lining to paint afterwards there should be no gaps whatsoever, this guy is jut a poxy amateur ,leaving joints to fill with easy fill then needs rubbing down which creates a lot of dust,these amateurs just make the job worse, just get yourself a bloody good old school decorator,

Hi there and thanks for watching. As mentioned in the video, I do always try to butt the edges together. However, this is not always possible for a number of reasons. The backgrounds may be uneven which skews the paper, it may be too difficult because of the location of the wall or ceiling, or the person decorating may simply be lacking in experience or confidence. I'm assuming that because of your negativity you conveniently chose not to mention these? In situations like this it is therefore better to leave a small gap between the edges rather than overlapping them. It also makes it possible for the amateur decorator to achieve an excellent result rather than wasting money paying some angry and bitter 'old school decorator' who is not guaranteed to do a better job at all. Despite being a 'poxy amateur' decorator myself, I have saved many £1000's by doing my own jobs, most of which have been completed to a very good standard. I also know a few people who do their own decorating to an amazing high standard and have no need whatsoever to pay someone else to do a job they can easily do themselves. As regards dust, any decorator knows that this is simply part and parcel of any job. ATB, Des
