In this oil painting tutorial I'll show you how to start a painting using blocking. Blocking in is the first step in defining the dominant tones and colours of the final painting.

That's a great way to start Michael,never occured to me to block in with Acrylic,I was on the verge of giving them away as I never got on with painting with them,they just dried too quickly here in Southern Spain,even with a retardant gel,you are brilliant! Wonderful to say the least! Thank you for having these lessons on KZfaq. QUESTION: Have you finished a painting in acrylic? Why use oils afterwards? What is your overall opinion about the end result about an acrylic painting and an oil one.

I don't think you are going to like the answers to these questions. He talked (made fun of :P) about the acrylic paints in another video. Based on your questions, you are probably more comfortable with acrylic :).

Yes, at the moment I do feel little more comfortable with acrylics, however, I want to hear the most honest, direct and unedited opinion of why using oils is better. I have so much to learn! I think Michael James Smith opinion will matter a great deal to me and will make me understand the difference between the 2 mediums. I only heard him once mention that he only likes to use acrylic for under painting. Is there a video in which he covers a little more on the difference between the 2 mediums?

Michael, mdf is very sensitive to moisture, what do you do to prevent your panels from bending? Especially when you use bigger panels?

Wanted to ask.... I use acrylics so could I work on blocking in and glazing before going into details? Would it hinder the final look in anyway? Another thing I noticed you tend to brush stroke vertically downwards, does that make any particular difference?

He paints on construction panels coated with three coats of wall / ceiling paint sanded smooth. That's what moisture resistant MDF is and Dulux pure brilliant white matt for walls and ceilings.

What type of gesso would be equivalent to the emulsion you use? I am in the USA and we don''t have that emulsion here...or at least by that brand name. Thanks

MIchael, you say the colors, "a bit of ivory black, a bit of cerulean blue and a touch of burnt umber" (~4:25) as you start the underpainting of the trees. Does that make your green without any yellow? Your input is appreciated.

You said 3 coats of dulux emulsion were applied and papered prior to that blue acrylic...wouldn't that dulux emulsion peel off over time? Would it stick to the board for a long time?

I am watching this video following checking my emails. I had one from the local arts council and it showed a 'painting' they were promoting locally. The finished work was not as good as this underpainting. How do some people get away with things like that?? your work is amazing, you must come over and do some of the scenery in Co. Kerry sometime you would love it. I would also like to thank you for posting your videos, you are the closest thing to an art teacher I have ever had and I am learning so much. I have never done landscapes as I thought they were too hard. I tried twice and failed dismally. So now I paint wildlife and horses, but you are tempting me to try again. ;-)

Thank you Scout, it really does seem as if the competition judges and the galleries are just making fools out of the buyers these days and seeing what rubbish they can get away with. Michael and people that put in the same amount of time and effort to produce something beautiful should be right at the top of the game. There is nothing skillful in dawbing colours on a canvas and calling it art. The one I was referring to just had a few vertical strokes of dirty green and 2 horizontal ones of a grey colour, it was called puddles and people were raving over it! I was disgusted.

I was reading your conversation and have also wondered how some see art as just a few splashes of color. I try not to say what art is or should be to other people but with paintings like you are referring too they make me feel more confident in my own skills. Even if a painting isn't that great it's still nice to know someone out there is trying and someone else wants it. I use to try so hard to achieve a "Great painting" and sometimes were better then others. I'm trying to take a new approach. Paint for me and for fun. The skill will come. If I manage to sell something I use the money for more supplies. After time spent you would think we would only get better. As for art I've seen that I found silly. The acrylic pouring is beautiful but it's it skill? Mix pour ave move around. Someone on a FB post wanted $1500 for one. lol

What do you call the sketches you make before you start painting? I'm looking for a toturial on that, because I'm quite happy with my paint skills but not my drawing skills :)

I am using the Titanium White student version. I'm almost done using it, so I'm thinking about buying a new one. For other colors I bought artist paint. White is used a lot, but it is inexpensive and has a large capacity, so it is less burdensome. Is there a difference between the artist version and the student version?

Artist version has more pigment. Well worth the investment
