Melvyn gave a peptalk at the (civvy version event) 22km 1k elevation over arduous terrain winter Fan Dance in Wales last January. Aged 58 he didn't just give the talk but participated in the race and finished with a 3 hours 1 minute time. (SAS selection cut-off time 4h 10m) and greeted every finisher with a chat and handing out medals. This guy is not only a legend but also an absolute beast of mental and physical fitness.

I remember been a Sgt Maj in Bosnia in 2004 and we had an SAS troop sent in, to do an operation to capture war criminals, as they walked down the road in Banja Luka metal factory and as they walked past the soldiers accommodation, one of the guys shouted “who dare wins Rodney”, they were initially frustrated, but then lapsed into laughter, have a sense of humour definitely 😂

Melvin, I do not agree with British policy and action in Ireland, but I do not blame British soldiers for this. I want to take a moment to acknowledge that you appeared to take pains to describe the conflict from not only your perspective, but from the perspective of the Irish as well. That took integrity and I know many people will appreciate that. I do.

Good comment. There's a line in a song by Black Sabbath called 'War Pigs' & it goes: ''Politicians hide themselves away. They only started the war. Why should they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor''. It pretty much sums up all war, mate. Incidentally, If it was like it used to be, when the King would be on the front line, do you think there'd be as much conflict today? 😂😂

Just over halfway through and really enjoying what melvyn has to say, what a nice bloke he appears to be. I'm ex Para Reg so i can confirm the attitude of paras towards other infantry soldiers who we referred to as 'craphats' . Too many Para Reg blokes were fixated on that and never seen the bigger picture, we are like cogs and all play a part and should turn and work together. I knew someone that went on SF Selection but was RTU'd after about 3 months because they referred to another one of the team as a 'hat'. He just could not get past the Capbadge issue 🤨🫣. There's nothing wrong with rivalry but but some took it to far, if you're good enough to attempt Selection and pass then there's nothing else to say in my opinion. Thanks for your service 🫡🇬🇧🍻 Also Colour of skin should not come into it, we all bleed the same and our skin colour is merely our wrapping paper. 😁❤️

B squadroms coin of the Bear paw was a Bear cub they found in the jungle and adopted it when there was SAS guys in the jungle. I think they found the Bear cub,as the mother had died,so fed and looked after it and took it back with them. I think it got taken to a zoo. I think it was in the 1960s or 1970s and so thats where the bear paw comes from, and what it represents, and it became the mascot for the squadron. I'm sure it was Lindsay Bruce i heard telling the story,so he would have been the one to ask about it ,as he was in B squadron.

@@simonmartin3433 I mean that it’s ridiculous to wonder if there were people of colour in the SAS. Why on earth would you think there wouldn’t be, did you think they were somehow excluded from joining the British armed forces?

Any soldier can apply for selection. There are all types in the regiment, including Ghurkas, which should come as no surprise …

I don't think anyone who has been in the infantry comes out of it unscathed ref mental health, not necessarily straight away but when you get older and then you look back on the shit you went through. I'm a veteran and recently went to a reunion and got talking and was amazed at how many lads had taken their own lives since leaving the service. 😢

@Haaych. Perhaps you need me to qualify that in order for you to understand! Do you hear him discussing the 'WHO, WHAT, WHEN & HOW' ? Do you ever read of the SAS writing books on the 'who, what, when or how ' in other words being mission specific? Do you ever hear of former SAS professionals Making millions $ by writing glorified books, Hollywood films, and doing the public speaking circuit. The answer is NO. Unlike some SF who shall remain nameless for the purposes of this discussion. That may be in part due to UK law. A law that non the less upholds the integrity of the British special forces. There are 'actors' within the US SF who have gone on to capitalise on 'their' narrative. The result of which is more questions than answers have been raised.
