Hello friends, today in this video I have shown how to make a 220v to 12v converter circuit. Please note, this circuit is not isolated from mains so don’t touch any naked wire in this circuit when the circuit is plugged in.
If you want to increase the brightness of the led use 10W led and 2.2uf ceramic capacitor in place of 1uf. This capacitor must be rated 400v or above.

When using diodes with shorter than original lead length, you MUST reduce current rating of the diode, per Sylvania ECG Engineering staff. Solder should be applied to the joint, not put on the iron and transferred to the joint. That circuit should have a fuse in it also. Very dangerous construction to use it that way. We often use a capacitor of a certain size to reduce AC voltage input to antique radios that originally had resistance line cords.

Two bottom side diodes of the bridge should be 27 V /1.3 W zener. There must be a 100 Ohms 2 Watts resistor serie connected to 1uF capacitor. This capacitor should be rated to 400V AC at least and type X2 (ask your component dealer) Otherwise you get a very good explosion after a short while. This circuit was used in the past even by Siemens for space constrainted applications. It is stil used by some Chinese and Indian manufacturers in cheap LED bulbs. Even there is an IC which utilizes this configuration. And yes, their lifetime is very short

I've been using simplified version as mains indicator. just with small red led (like 2 mA current) and although it's nice little circuit, with justified use in some cases, I wouldn't recommend it to people without experience. it's really dangerous, and you should know the necessary precautions to use it..

@@lazyh-online4839 Why we do not need it with the LED? How the O/P voltage is 12V now?
@lazyh-online4839
@lazyh-online4839 3 жыл бұрын
@@tubfragr2270 because led require a current controlled power supply, not a voltage controlled. The "resistance" of an LED is highly dependent upon temperature, the hotter it gets the less resistance it has which means more power flows through it which means it gets hotter which means it resists less, more power, hotter, resists less, more power, hotter, on and on. It's a runaway effect until the led blows up or dies, so controlling voltage doesn't do anything for an led, so a zener is pretty useless. Also a zener of that size wouldn't work for those power levels anyways. A capacitor can only be charged up a certain amount for a given voltage, after that the capacitor is "full" so the cap can't pass more current than it can store for each cycle, this current limiting is how the led doesn't overheat like if it was getting constant voltage like a zener would do.
@lazyh-online4839
@lazyh-online4839 3 жыл бұрын
@@tubfragr2270 also, most leds like this have a 32v forward voltage, so a 12v zener wouldn't even be enough anyways.

The reason I placed a thumbs down is because this circuit will KILL. If you are silly enough to connect directly to mains, then use a total of 4 capacitors. Use 2* 4.7uf ceramic caps in series in each leg, so, if any one capacitor goes short, live mains is not connected directly to the LED's. use 2 * 4.7 uf in series in neutral leg, 2 in active leg, (capacitors value's halve when connected in series. total capacitance in circuit connected to mains is 4.7uf /4 = 1.75 uf. much safer. Also, FULLY ENCLOSE circuit in insulated box. LIVE circuits make DEAD men.

No, this is a really poor idea and I would discourage anyone from attempting to build. The output is dependant on the load - you have no way of regulating here, which is what you imply from the title! You also have a 25v electrolytic which would be stressed with that same over-voltage. As you mention in the video, this circuit is dangerous as it is mains referenced - why on Earth (pun intended) would you not want a transformer? - they’re cheap enough... Even safe switched-mode supplies are cheap as chips now. I don’t believe you really understand this circuit, which is why you don’t explain its operation and you shouldn’t show people how to play with fire 💡🔥⚡️🤡

Though he didn't build it right, this is actually a very common power supply design, lots of cheaper electronic components like iot buttons and the like often use them because it's way cheaper than their a transformer or a smps. In a way the capacity of that first capacitor limits the current available based on the ac frequency and internal resistance, which is why an "unregulated" version like this actually works pretty well for high power led supplies. Besides that the main issue is chosing a properly rated capacitor (they're specially made for this kind of application, but still cheaper than anything else) and using zeners to regulate the voltage down.

@@RajKumar-ci7dg the ac supply sometimes goes above or around 240 V,so unsafe to use 250 V ceramic in case of an ac spike, if you use less than 1 mega ohm it may not be able to discharge the ceramic fully when circuit is off, you may use it for higher watt,but 1/4 W serves the purpose well....for further safety you may use a 100 ohm 2 watt fusible resistance at the input side....so far as the calculations are concerned we take help of Ohm's law which is not fully correct since each resistor has got its own self inductance value which is not easy to judge and hence to judge the impedance from R-L phasors,also the diodes being semiconductor devices donot exactly comply by Ohm's law.....use a 3 V LED with 1 K in series at the dc output as an indicator

Dear what is maximum current of this circuit and how many led can glow on this circuit?
@KjartanAndersen
@KjartanAndersen 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the capacitance and frequency. From capacitance and frequency you calculate reactance. And Ohm's Law will then tell you the maximum power possible. 1 uF on a 220V 50 Hz mains system will give a reactance of 3183 ohm. And with 220V that limits the power to 69 mA.

Please, for the love of god, don't do this at home. Especially with that plug that has no ground at all and it's extremely dangerous because you have no way to know the polarity when you are plugging it in and you could easily connect the phase with the hot one and short cirtuit the whole thing.

P = VI V = 12 volt, P = 5 watt I = P ÷ V = 5 ÷ 12 = 0.416 ampere. However, the line input is A.C., and it is plainly rectified by a full bridge rectifier circuit. There's no voltage regulation circuit.

@@khelifinouredine1842 @Khelifi Nouredine you are welcome, my dear friend. The above calculation is for the 5W LED. The source built in the video, however, provides an unregulated D.C. supply to the LED ; less than 0.1 ampere of load current, as it is based on the reactive property of the non-polarised capacitor ( 1uF ).

Let me explain the circuit. The value of input capacitor will determine the output current. A 1uf capacitor will bring about 60mA current. This is not dangerous although the voltage current ranged 260v. Why the COB does not burned because the current is too small. It will take about 500mA to work optimally but also cause heat so bad.
@TWINSTARSHIDO
@TWINSTARSHIDO 5 жыл бұрын
There's a mistake in the description. Not 12v but 260v. If you want to have a 12v you must add a 7812
