#223. This RESIN Experiment BLEW ME AWAY!
In todays Resin Art video I try to see if I can melt my own bismuth crystals to use in an epic piece of resin Art jewelry!
I ran into a few problems on the way with this resin art project and almost had to walk away from it! Although It does not seem that way in the video, lots of tantrums were had 😂.
I wouldn't recommend trying to melt bismuth at home unless you are confident in doing so and well protected! There are plenty of great videos to watch on KZfaq on how to do this.
All in all, I'm so happy I didn't give up on this Resin Art project! It came out absolutely incredible!
You can now be a member of my channel which will give you access to comment badges and also wallpaper of my macro photography. You may need to save these to your device via a PC or screenshot and adjust the images.

You are a wizard! I showed this to my husband. He's an engineer & knows a lot about chemistry. He came over to see if I was ok because of the noise I made when I I saw this pendant. 😂 I told him how you took the Bismuth and melted to make the crystals. He was impressed with the end result of your pendant. Got an "oh wow" from him. High praise from him Daniel! 💗💗

Hey Daniel. My metallurgist husband says the iridescent sheen is an optical thing, not due to oxides. He says light hits the surface molecules and reflects different wavelengths. When you put the UV resin on top you changed the optical properties, making light hit it differently and that's why the sheen disappeared. I have made faux kyanite crystals and used iridescent pigments to achieve the same effect on their surface, Those color shifting chameleon powders work great! You can use more than one color and apply them randomly over the surface, similar to how you made those faux moonstones. A magenta-blue shift would look lovely!

I wondered that as flame painting copper has the same problem, stunning colours until you seal it and unsealed it’ll just turn green. Such a shame to lose the beautiful colours like blues and pinks from the heat. The structure still looks amazing on your piece Daniel 👏🏼

Bismuth is the coolest element ever, and you made it into something extra special. Bismuth crystals have always reminded me of some ancient pyramid structures, and the pendant looks like a miniature world. I think you made the right choice with how you hung it. I was gonna suggest grinding a shallow groove around the sphere and add a metal band to it, but this is much less invasive and leaves the beauty of the crystals free to be admired.

@@daniel..cooper You could pre-make the wire loop that goes around the side seam and put it in place before you put the clear dome on top. It would be held in place by the cured resin.

Sometimes you can put a holographic nail polish ( ordinary not gel) on and it looks fantastic. Then you topmost it and loose all the holo -ness. All those fantastic colours disappear. This reminded me of that. There are a few different top coats and not all keep that beautiful holo look. Maybe it's the same with resins. I'm sure it must have something to do with light refraction but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

The colours you see are not real colours, but are interference patterns like an oil film on water, or a butterfly's wing. The colour you see means that at that wavelength there is constructive interference. The refractive index of most epoxies is around 1.5. This means that the frequency of light that experiences constructive interference will be 1.5 times higher in resin than in air. If a crystal looks blue in air, it means it has constructive interference in the 470nm range. In resin, the light which has 470nm is well into the ultraviolet, so we can't see it. If you have a crystal which looks red in air, that means it responds to a wavelength of about 700nm. The light which has that wavelength in resin is blue, so a crystal which looks red in air should look blue in resin. When you have a crystal with "no colour", that could be because the interference is in the infrared part of the spectrum. You may find that s crystal with no special colours in air looks like a rainbow in resin.
