This almost exactly mirrors the results I've gotten with my self-built AR-15 .224V. 88gr ELD, Varget, slightly above book powder values (I have no pressure signs, I suspect Hornady's data is somewhat conservative...Sierra's is, IMO, borderline too hot, particularly with the temp-sensitive powders they list as best performers, like RL-17.) I am getting single digit SDs, and essentially identical accuracy, right at ~.5in@100y. I AM running things a bit hotter than you (24.3gr), but I'm also running absolute maximum length to fit in ASC magazines, which I've found have the largest interior diameter for available 6.8spc mags. I suspect we've found the same pressure-node, with my COAL a bit longer and a few 10ths more powder, evening things out. I'm getting 2650fps. I haven't watched all your vids yet, but something that worked wonders for me, because I ran into the same bullet-deformation issues as you: Hornady sells a seating stem designed for their 80gr A-Max, with a profile that more closely matches the 88gr bullet. It drops right in to their valkyrie dies, and it's like 12 bucks. I got that, then took an 88gr bullet and put it in a power drill, covered it in lapping compound, and spent about 2 minutes spinning it into that seating stem (using just light hand pressure). I washed the stem and installed it, and now I have absolutely zero bullet deformation, even with my compressed loads. (I've since done the same thing with another seating stem, exactly tayloring it to the 90gr SMK, which I find shoots best with H4350, but I've never been able to get quite as good accuracy with that bullet and it's twice as expensive!)

I can't get the 90 smk to work at all. 3-4 shots of 5 will be touching or one ragged hole but one always goes out 1-2". Driving me insane! I knew they would be challenging but dang. But it's a hobby. I can get the same recoil impulse and extreme accuracy out of my 6cm or 243 win but I like new shiny things.

Definitely look at RL17 for extruded powder and 2000MR for spherical powder. I've go better performance with both than varget. Their is no reason for your bolt rig to not perform sub half moa easily and get sub 10 SD. I'd like to see you run a 10 shot load development and a true OCW side by side and compare both results. Great content as usual.

Agreed regarding RL17 and 88 ELD. I also find that Win760 is a great ball powder for 224 Valkyrie. Just need to pour slowly into the case to help it compact closely.

Fantastic ! Now i've got to find your video you may have done on walking it out to its most stable and effective distance shots. I haven't heard nor seen a 224, (222, 223 or 224) shoot that well since I saw a guy from Switzerland shoot at the Olympics. Now, i've got some searching to do on your channel to find your video walking your pet load out to its most distant stable (repeatable) and effective range. That guy shooting for switzerland at the olympics shot out to 1000 yards with his customed rifle if as he was shooting at 100 yards like you've just did in your video.

I really think this cartridge will reach its full potential when the bolt rifle manufacturers get on board with it. From what i've seen it makes the 22-250 obsolete as a varmint cartridge.
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 5 жыл бұрын
Here's how I think about it: 22-250 is GREAT for super-fast close work (55 grain bullets, 4000 FPS, 600 yards and under). 224 Valkyrie is designed for longer ranges- and yes, it is fun to shoot in a bolt gun!!! Then, there's 22 Creedmoor- is that the ultimate bolt-gun hyper-22? Perhaps I'll see later (2019?)
@TommyboyGTP
@TommyboyGTP 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ultimatereloader What's barrel life on hyper 22's like the 22 Creedmoor and 22-243 and others? Can't be all that great if you're in a fast shooting varmint environment. Perhaps in bench precision shooting where shots are done slower? 224 Valkyrie looks to have longer barrel life over the hyper 22's from what i've come across online.
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 5 жыл бұрын
@@TommyboyGTP Totally true- you can burn out a 22-250 barrel in ~1000 rounds if pushing it to the max. 224V should be better... But that's also why I got setup to rebarrel my own rifles, let the barrels burn! :)

So how much did the case heads expand on your top load, and did you mike the primer pockets before and after? Seems the big problem with 224V has been the short case life when the velocities get to the level needed to match the long range requirements. Both these measurement have to be made on new brass, once fired cases are not useful for either of these test. Max pressure for 224V is only 55000 psi, so you cannot reliably use primer distortion, or ejector swipe to determine pressures less than 60000 psi. Case head expansion is the only close approximation we have to find when we have reached limits. Normally I measure case head expansion of factory ammo, and use that measurement as safe when measuring my hand loads for a caliber (that is hoping factory actually has developed their load with pressure test.

@@Ultimatereloader I have the Ballistic Tools Primer Pocket gauge, and find the No-Go side useful so I do not attempt to prime those cases already too big. However, this is not perfect as cases that gauge too big and are too loose with Rem 7 1/2 primers will hold Fed AR primers OK. So like every gauge they have limitations. The Go gauge is only useful to find crimped pockets that have not bee opened enough, or to find which brass manufacturers make the tightest pockets. Example, my Peterson cases will not let the Go Gauge enter the pocket when new unless I force it. Once fired the gauge will just enter, twice fired it drops in. Too bad primer manufacturers tollerences are so loose now as compared to 20 years ago. Too many bean counters running the show.

Why are we STILL sitting here over a year after the debut of the .224 Valkyrie and still trying to find consistent sub moa results? Not to mention at a mere 100 yards! Having to resort to hand loads for sub moa consistency at that same 100 yards? C’mon, I totally get the challenge of it. I own two myself. But how is this round reasonable for the average non-loading shooter? Am I missing something here? Creating a bolt action.224 makes no sense when the 308 or 6.5 creedmoor is out there. Rifle time set up is the same.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I thought that .3 was with reloads? (Amazing shooting btw) I’m not knocking you. You’re awesome and I appreciate what you share. My point was that, no other caliber in the AR15 platform has had such a hard road from a ‘factory load’ standpoint across the industry of different barrel makers to the point where some are even changing the twist in attempt to stabilize the heavier factory ammo. I completely understand the necessity of reloading for extreme and consistent precision and perhaps this video on your channel isn’t the appropriate platform to share my exasperation with this caliber. I guess I am just saying, that as a shooter who has two different .224 V’s it’s extremely difficult to gain ANY reliability at all unless I create my own loads. Even with the worst barrels in other calibers one can eventually find a factory load with acceptable accuracy and reliability (within reason)
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 5 жыл бұрын
Warthog- those were my loads- but with new brass, and bullet seating depth to factory spec- so it's kind of like factory ammo really. I think what we're really seeing here is like a lot of other things- when you push things to the max- things are a LOT less forgiving. I'm thinking of my 2001 Dodge 3500 Dually with hopped up Cummins Turbo Diesel- you can really burn some HOT EGTs towing up a pass, and even overheat. I've pushed the factory cooling system beyond what it was designed for, etc. would I trade my truck for a more stock one? NO WAY!!!!!! :) :) At least mine is a 6-spd manual, so I don't have to worry about blowing up Dodge auto transmissions :)
