A lot of car enthusiasts only have one chance to buy their dream car. Fortunately, the owner of this '66 GT350 had the pleasure of purchasing his TWICE! Once sold out from under him while on vacation, the owner's friend sold his precious '66 Hertz GT350 over a miss-understanding and was fortunate enough to make a deal with the owner and buy it back years later. In this episode of "The Appraiser," Colin appraises a 1966 Shelby GT350 Hertz car with a period correct Paxton Supercharger and a reference car for originality. While this supercharged GT350 may produce a lot of horsepower, there are some flaws with this beauty and they do come at a cost, a six-figured cost... Will Colin's price support the owners decision of buying the car a second time? Did he overpay the second time? Tune in and find out.

I believe that cars were meant to be driven. I’ve been driving a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback for 52 years. I got the car with 11,000 miles on it and it is now approaching 700,000 miles. My car is not a show car but a hard working friend. I always get waves and horn honks whenever I drive it. That Shelby is an absolute gem. Years back I got to visit the Shelby shop in Southern California prior to their move to Vegas. That building was like Aladdin’s cave!!! So much power and beauty in one spot. It’s also wonderful to see low mileage originals as well. I don’t begrudge anyone fortunate to have the financial means required. I always feel glad for the other owners who feel the same way as I do when it comes to the classics.

The fact that the owners did not drive the car much is crazy to me. I would drive it any chance I get. Cars were meant to be driven, but thank you to the people who don't think I like I do so we can all appreciate some of the best cars that were built before I was born.

I paid $11,600 for my 350H in 1987. While not as original it's been a delightful investment and... I drove the hell out of it. Less so since I restored it 3 years ago.

Back in the day, I rented a Blue one with Gold strips . I had a absolute BLAST with that car for $17.00 a day. Incredible car ! Wish I had the for site to have tried to purchase it after they had their run of renting these choice rides. I have the pic`s and the vivid memories .

I see at least 2 cars in that garage that I used to drive daily for work. I was a fleet manager at an exotic car rental company in the 90's. It was an awesome job if you loved cars. I loved working there, but I left there to join the Marine Corps. When I came back I wanted to see if I could go back, but unfortunately the owner had some health issues and closed up shop.

Went to 50th anniversary Daytona 500, and rented the Shelby GT convertible for the week. Black with the Gold Stripes. 2008 was the year.

Back in the 60s guys would rent these cars for a couple days take the car home and swap out the Hipo engine for the regular engine in their mustang then return the car so alot of these cars don't have the original engine in them.

As the owner of a 1969 Shelby GT350 fastback, I thoroughly enjoyed this program. In case you're not aware of it, the old original Shelby cars produced under Shelby have gone up in value quite a bit. Can't say the same about the "new" Shelby cars coming out of Las Vegas.

I agree but not only those produced by Shelby but also those produced by Ford. As the owner of a 70 GT350 4 speed vert(1 of 57 total) I know the market and the prices paid privately lately for some have been over 200K. As a matter of fact a friend bought recently one of Colin's old GT350 verts and it was over 200K. Air 4 speed red 69 GT350 vert. Try buying a 69-70 GT500 drag pack vert. Better have 400K plus on hand.

I believe the late models that are “real” pre-title Shelby’s will see value one day in the future, the 07 Shelby GT’s & the 08/09 GT500KR’s, but who knows time will tell

Late 60's, my dad showed up later in the week while we were at his parents in upper MI summer vacation. He was driving a car exactly like that being a rental because mom had the family car. The car was balack w/gold really neato like my hotwheels cars. Maybe it was 4th July weekend because I remember fireworks loaded in the trunk.

Lovely car, the paint thickness device measures in microns not mils. It's always interesting to see the way cars were styled 50 years ago, so much better than today. Great video.

The fender splendor paint meter I use does indeed measure in mils. Some other surface coating thickness meters do read in microns but not the majority. I see even when I put in the actual video that it is measuring in mils and not millimeters or microns people still don’t believe me! Another failed social experiment. Lol. The Shelby club in my town there a few of the Shelby gt350’s with these superchargers . I can’t believe how cheap it was to add it back in those times

That's a beautiful example of an American 🇺🇸 classic. Personally I have no need for a car like that but someone's wallet is willing to get one at $200,000. That's a good price for such a preserved model. Does anything think otherwise about the cars value?

Actually that is an urban legend that has been disproven by the Shelby American Automobile Club. There is no documented case of any Hertz car having its engine removed while rented. There is one documented case of a Cobra racer borrowing a carburetor or distributor off of one however- after he used the Hertz car to tow his Cobra to the track!

Is his friend that sold his car still alive? Super nice car. I've heard lots of stories on these rent-a-racers. Some were funny, some were incredible ( roll bars installed for a weekend then removed prior to returning them after the weekend of racing ) and some were a nightmare beyond belief ( swapping out/ stealing the original engine and/or tranny ).

In June of 1966, I rented one of these in San Diego for $19. I drove it so hard while drag racing friends that the front brakes failed (overheated/melted) disc brake piston. I was off to USMC boot camp the next day, and Hertz towed the car back. NO CHANGE because of the brake failure.

My '66 Coupe isn't that spendy but I know what he means by "No, it's not for sale" I bought my '66 in 1988 for $4,400. Wouldn't take $15,000 for it today....even tho it really needs a paint job and a few other items. Keep it. My "toy" has 215,000 miles on it, so yeah, it does see the road some. From 1988 till 2022 I still havn't logged 100,000 miles on it. Got all the Registrations from 1977 till 1988 from Orig. owner and I have the ones from 1988 thru today. No clue why the guy didn't keep the first 10 Registration paperwork. Love the Hertz cars tho!

So what is a "mils" and what is it supposed to mean if not Millimeter?? Are you using another system besides the Imperial system? That would mean it's not metric and it's not Imperial. Strange.

In the U.S. we use the Imperial unit of measure called mils to measure the thickness of coatings. One mil is equivalent to 1 thousandth of an inch (.001”). If it were metric we’d measure in microns and if I recall correctly a micron is 1 thousandth of a millimeter (.001mm). Confusing, yes, but such is the world of measurement! A sheet of paper is something like 2 mils, a dollar bill is 3-4 mils, so on and so forth.

Hi, obviously we in Europe have millimeters as a measurement. What you not metrics county you enterprete as "mils" . But u declared this is not even mm. That thinkness is the paint. Obviously this devise measure In a 1/100 of mm. s

a mil is 1/1000 of an inch. So a 2.5 mil thickness in paint would be 0.0025" thick.

A friend of mine is a Boss 429 Guru and I can tell you too many buy Boss 429s and then have him go over the cars. He does as he would be judging at a show. When he is done many are pretty upset. He never understands why they don't have him go over a car BEFORE they buy it whether private or at auction.

the right shop can strip the paint down to bare metal and paint it and make it look like it was factory mil paint.

That's a CRIME that this is auto. How the hell are you meant to go circuit racing properly with an auto... 🤦 I think another period correct mod would have been to slap a top loader in this- like it should have come anyway

These C-4's were set up differently from Shelby American. Bigger servo's. They shift HARD. Mine will chirp rubber when it shifts into second. Easy swap however and many have done it. Or you can look for one of the original 85 four speed cars.

I don't agree with paint being something that should be original. Recoloring I can see as being something that devalues it, but paint is a wear item. You'd never, ever hear someone brag their Shelby Mustang has the original oil in it, so why is original paint something so sought after? To keep the paint something approaching factory pristine, the vehicle would have to be sealed in a vacuum with no light ever touching it, and even then, the paint is still degrading. And then, its not a car anymore, but yet another asset no one ever really enjoys.

This mans paint theory and tool dont make sense who paints the hood and sides but dont paint the roof and fender thats not how paint jobs are done. Acting like shelby paints precisely to the mil back in 65 when everything was done by hand.
