Within the first 10 seconds of this video you will see a cat put a paw into the entrance hole of the nest. This week we've had magpies, woodpeckers, starlings and now cats try and get into the nest. When will it end?.
Fortunately the cat failed and with assistance from it's owner we've put up a chicken wire 'umbrella' below the nest to stop any more feline adventures. What's next? Locusts?
Our fears from yesterday were confirmed at 4.59am when our female removed another expired chick from the nest. This leaves us with three surviving chicks. If we didn't have bad luck we wouldn't have any luck at all. Did the fact that the chicks hatching was spread out over almost 4 days have something to do with the relatively low survival rate or has it been the last week's atrocious weather? People smarter than I might have answers to that.
The remaining chicks seems strong, alert and full of energy. The parents have been feeding all three throughout the day and into the evening at an impressive rate. Let's hope that all of them make it through their last week in the nest and here's no further unwanted drama.
More tomorrow...

They remove it and eat it for two reasons, firstly the chick is too young to fully digest the food so the bird is getting nutrients from the poop; secondly is not to attract predators, poop smells and it will draw the attention of anything that smells it.

Had a mama bird build a nest inside my grapevine basket wreath on my front door one yr. Didn't realize it until I saw the eggs. It was the neatest ever! Have no idea what the birds were, but this mama didn't clean up after the babies defecated. Unfortunately, it left an awful mess on my front door & was very difficult to clean. There were all sorts of bugs & stuff in the nest & wreath too. Now I'm a lot more careful abt the type of wreaths I make! Wouldn't have minded so much, but it's definitely a safety hazard when the grandkids are coming in & out the front door!

Some tiny birds similar to tits nested in my rear garden tree, two years back to back, wonderful to watch and a privilege, but boy oh boy, magpies, crows, cats all getting or trying to get into the cover of this particular tree. When i see nesting i allow the dogs to chase off big birds and any other predators , they have learnt pigeon = good, crow / magpie / fox / cat = bad. I know i shouldn't interfere with nature but all my neighbours are cutting down trees or having lots of branches removed during nesting season, so i like to give them somewhere as safe as i can make it.

I felt sure I'd counted seven open mouths at one time !! They work so hard . It's wonderful to see your video set-up. I've just watched blackbirds raise four, in my lean-to; after losing four out of five of their first brood. They lost one to a pigeon, two to jackdaws and one I'm not sure about - but it was a very stressful and upsetting few days !!

@caralynhale3757
@caralynhale3757 3 жыл бұрын
@@lilybsrose In this instance, the pigeon had previously made a poor attempt at building a "nest", just a few loose twigs, very close (about 12") from the spot the blackbirds later built their nest - I suspect this is what drew the pigeon back, at the time the young had been hatched about a week. The nesting place was on some shelving in a lean-to, so inside rather than outside, and quite awkward to access and I guess the pigeon felt it was safely HIS. (There was never a mate for this pigeon, and never a better nest, he's still in garden every day). I agree, the pigeons here are usually peaceable towards other bird species. It gets quite stressful this time of year, when one can't help but be aware of at least some of what's going on in the lives of our garden birds !!

@ravenred201 3 жыл бұрын
@@scott2836 yes, it's an additional piece of wood, with a hole the same diameter (or a little larger actually, it will still do the job), it mounts over the original hole and this piece is an 3/4 - 1 inch thick/deep or so. (imagine the neck/head of the predator bird that is able to get that part of him inside, this extra piece helps take his ability away) Also, bird houses that are rectangle, with a hole in the middle is helpful because most birds want to build in a corner, so if they build to the far left or far right of a rectangle box, then they are far enough away from a predator bird who can only get in as far as his shoulders.. and even less if the guard is outside. Also, being a rectangle box it gives the soon to be fledglings ample room for wing flapping. having a rectangle gives far left and far right space for hiding. It would also be more difficult for a cat.

A pair of pica pica can not airlift a cat. Not even 4. Our cat attacked once a larus marinus and that is a formidable size, it had no chanse of airlifting itself during the attack and I had to rescue it. Right, after the male/female argument from video 1 - the female has a nice, neat cap & we see her 2nd. The poor male looks decidedly rough, with a scraggy & oddly-coloured cap, black lines & white patches. The female selects the box & builds the nest, with little (or no) help from the male.

You missed something. It does not state 'next video'. It states 'next is footage of a chick being removed from the nest - please don't watch if you think this might upset you'. These words fade out and then the footage showing the chick being removed is shown. Just leave the video playing... There isn't any clickbait going on.

@@Karen-pl8kd Or they could die, or get hurt. My cat is quite happy even though she has a very long leash, so I can control how far she can go and in certain occasions save some small animal from her. Grabbed one of the resident chipmuks, who had no idea she was not a friend, like my previous cat that used to sit in the porch with them. I was able to save it and she got upset, as in avoided me for a few hours. More cats die thanks to people like you.

Just a shame to think that those little ones will probably be eaten within 1 day of leaving the nest by some domestic cat who's owner don't give a fuck that his/her 'cute fluffy kitty' is a walking murder machine that helps lead many important birdspecies to its distinction. Cats are a serious hazard to the fauna and the ecosystem :( Please if you read this,and own a cat...keep it as far away from birds,butterflies and bees as possible to help save the already crumbling ecosystem,thank you. People that own a cat...also need to own responsibility. I have 2 cats myself,they play in the garden everyday,BUT only with my supervision,and I will not even go to the toilet for 1 minute without calling them inside first,because there are many birds and insects that visit my garden,so even just 1 minute I wont let them unsupervised..they are fast and brutal,no 'cute fluffballs' at all when you know how many birds and butterflies they kill each year :(

All the trauma this family is experiencing is just because their home is in the wrong place. The other families are fine, but this one has everything wrong. Poor birds ... and the person who did this to them should reconsider placing a birdhouse in advance.

@@ekaluraw4376 Yeah, I don’t know what that person means. I even get information from nature and animal groups begging people not to let cats roam. People think it’s funny until it affects them. Years ago I was at the vet with my dog. This woman was saying how sick her family had been because their cat brought in animals infected with parasites. The vet tech went off on her as to how it was their own fault.
