It can be hard to know which toys to get a busy toddler. Obviously you want to choose a toy which is great for their development, but most importantly a toddler toy that they will love to play with.
Over the years I have realised the most expensive toys for 1 year olds are usually not the best. Toddlers often become frustrated when playing with these “1 year old toys” because they are simply too complex!
In fact the best 1 year old toys are generally the simpler ones.
In this video I am going show you the best toys for 1 year old - 18 months. Not only are these toddler toys fun, they also provide lots of developmental benefits.

I’m a bit late to the party on this video, so you probably won’t see this, but my bubba has recently 1 and I thought i would give it a watch as he was struggling with the toys people bought him for Xmas and birthday. I just wanted to say a huge thank you! I completely agree that toys aimed at 1 year olds are too complex for the younger toddlers, and I was beginning to worry that my son was delayed in some way as he can’t figure them out! Now I know, they just aren’t suitable yet and to stick with the simple ones instead! You’ve given me loads of ideas here! Thanks from the UK 🇬🇧

Thank you for this! I was just looking for more toys for my 13 month old! She started crawling at exactly 5 months and walking at 11 - those push toys are really a big help. I introduced xylophone, shape sorter, stack cups and rings at 9 months. She was able to play with the stack cups and rings properly by 9 months and she’s getting better at shape sorter right now. Will definitely add the other toys on my Christmas shopping list for her! Thanks so much ❤️

Dear Emma, I really appreciate your work and watch your videos regularly. I also want to compliment you on your presentation and I've noticed that you've improved a lot and gained more confidence when comparing your first videos and now. I've just had to make a short video for my work (which is not my typical task) and after only 45 minutes of filming, I'm totally exhausted and pretty unhappy with the result🤪. Which makes me appreciate your work even more.

I've been trying to get wooden toys instead of plastic but found them really heavy, like you mentioned for animals. What would you suggest? I have a shape sorter and a stacking tower in different shapes made of wood but they seem to be a bit scary so I put them away and use plastic ones instead for now which seems a bit weird :( my daughter is 9m.o. so I'm wondering when it's going to be safe to give her all these heavy wooden toys with sharp corners 😳

That musical toy is actually called a glockenspiel which is a metallophone. A xylophone is made from wood. Even on Amazon they are wrongly labeled. Babies and toddlers should really start with small wooden instruments like rhythm sticks, jingles, drums, maracas or rattles first that they could also bite eagerly before moving to plastic and metal for sound as they could get quite loud. I’m an early childhood music specialist and mom of a bilingual musical baby boy :-)

Thank you!! This is so helpful! My baby is 11 months old. I have a shape sorter box with drawer and a ring stacker, but I think they might be too advanced? (rings are small wood, not big plastic, for example) Is it worth getting an easier version of these for baby to learn with and then re-introduce the more complicated version later? Or let her continue to smack these around and hope she figures it out soon?
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Rebecca Holloway so glad you found this video helpful! I would just stick with the shape sorter and ring stacker that you have. Try and encourage your little one to remove the rings from the ring stacker and then you can show her how to put them back on. If it has a curved base you might want to hold the base of the ring stacker to make it slightly easier. Also don't worry about the order she puts the rings on at this age. Hope that helps.

We got much of these toys! They are really good tips! My crazy boy is quite advanced for his age (he is now 10 months). He started stacking rings himself at 9,5 months already! And occasionally he can stack two blocks. He was crawling at 5,5 months, cruising since 6,5 months and already uses a push trolley unaided as well (with me behind him)! Drives me nuts sometimes! He really does not want to be a baby! Which makes it quite tricky to choose the right toys for him to keep him engaged and properly stimulated, haha!! Some toys for his age are too boring already. Some older toys are perfect. Some older toys are still a bit too advanced. Always quite the search!

@@EmmaHubbard Yea, he is insane! Makes me sad sometimes, I feel like I missed out on a lot of baby time! Haha! He is pretty much toddling around already! Cruising, standing, kneeling, climbing the poof at times, letting go for 2 seconds. You can see on my channel a video of his insane stacking skills! Currently he is getting a ball pit and my first stacking "lego like" blocks and an animal puzzle for Christmas! I think I will get the sound puzzle you mentioned! I never knew they existed! I will definitely keep that water table idea for his birthday in February!

Hi Ms. Emma. I'm new to your channel. My eldest son (6yrs old) has autism and my 2nd (2 yrs old) has some delays. They're about to start with their therapies. I have question, what toys are perfect for a 2 year old?

Thanks for all your advice. Any advantage on using the large egg shaped crayons, or are chunky regular shaped ones good enough to start with? Thank you 7:01

The large chunky regular shaped ones are perfectly fine. I don’t think there is any advantage.

Our Tod is coming up on 18 months... Any chance you have a video coming out for this age period? She's become so adept at several of her toys now that they start to bore her, even when we rotate, and she is clearly looking for new challenges...

My son is 12 months and doesn’t put things back together. He’s all about taking all the toys apart and then randomly banging two things together, be it blocks, puzzle pieces, etc. How can I help him start to put things together? He also doesn’t care to put shapes into their proper slots on shape sorters. What should I do?

Some great tips Emma thank you!! My baby girl enjoys most of them. But is it just me that sometimes think- "Why do i bother buying toys when most of what my baby is interested in is anything non toys!?"....spatula, paper, spoon, keys....at the moment our lemon squeezer is a HUGE success!! Haha!

😂 Not just you! Babies do tend to love measuring cups, wooden spoons, plastic bowls and Tupperware. Basically anything they see us using which can also make lots of noise!

Thank you, because I've had 3 kids and every time we bought toys marketed to 1 year olds they wouldn't play with them until almost 2 😅 And by then the toys would've had some or a lot of wear and tear from being thrown or banged around😂! now I understand their little minds much better, so now with my 4th i know not to waste my money until at least 2!

Just wondering for Toy Vehicles - is it better to get realistic looking ones and not the ones with the toy faces? Also, some of the links you've linked to Amazon doesn't work anymore :). Congratulations for hitting 202K subscribers - been following you since early days - Thank you for your channel - you have helped me heaps in navigating my journey as a mom.

Great ideas - thanks! What do you think about the big foam play pillow blocks (like the nugget or equivalent)? Probably too big to move themselves, but thought it could be fun to make tunnels to crawl through or obstacles to traverse.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @klderose I was actually considering this toy for this age range when I was making this video. I do really like these play pillows and they are a great toy which can grow with the child (I know 6 year old children who still love to play with these). The cushions would be a great item for a 1 year old to crawl over. I also like water play tables too for toddlers after they turn 16/18 months of age. But of course they need to be supervised with these toys.

Going back to this video now that my daughter is 14 months old. I forgot I bought her some cute stacking cups from IKEA months ago. I just found them! She has already been stacking baskets and bowls, so it will be fun to use the stacking cups too. I haven’t thought of inset puzzles, we do have some! It’s really fun watching her do more with toys now.
