#23 Replica of Magellan's Ship, The Nao Victoria - Living Atlas Chile

11 жыл бұрынA replica of the Spanish ship La Victoria sits grounded in Punta Arenas. La Victoria was the first boat to successfully circumnavigate the globe and the one in which captain Ferdinand Magellan first spotted what are now Chilean territories. The boat was constructed by a group of ship owners from Punta Arenas, and today functions as a museum.

Beautiful re-creation! Thank you for your dedication to this seemingly long forgotten man and his impact on world history. Very nicely done replica! I wish I lived in Chile, I would visit that in a flash!

La nao Victoria fue la única que completó la primera vuelta al mundo al mando de Juan Sebastián Elcano, no de Magallanes. Éste había muerto en Mactan, Filipinas.

Great pictures of the ship, especially the rudder mechanism. It's hard to believe the conditions they lived under for so long. I also read in the book that there were "seats" stretching overboard, one fore and one aft, for men to poop overboard (hopefully), and that they used bitumen coated hemp to wipe themselves, somehow. I didn't see that in this replica. Why not?

Hoy fui a este museo, muy buena idea de este señor, pero debería asesorarse con un arquitecto para hermosear el entorno en donde tiene los barcos.

Lo intentaron por el este, hacia Méjico; al no encontrar vientos favorables fracasaron. Su ruta de ida y vuelta dibujó un "ocho", sobrepasando hacia el norte la zona de vientos favorables sin encontralos. Murieron 31, quedando varios supervivientes que finalmente regresaron por la ruta portuguesa también ("la otra vuelta al mundo"). They tried it in the east, towards Mexico; not finding favorable winds they failed. His round trip route drew an "eight", passing towards the north the zone of favorable winds without encountering them. Thirty-one died, leaving several survivors who finally returned by the Portuguese route as well ("the other round the world").
