In the latest episode of Breaking Analysis, Dave Vellante, chief analyst at theCUBE Research, and George Gilbert, principal analyst at theCUBE Research, discuss the ongoing data platform wars between Snowflake and Databricks. As companies strive to optimize AI and rationalize siloed data, the impracticality of a single-platform approach is driving a shift towards open models that allow for greater data control and the use of diverse compute engines.

The focus is moving from databases to governance catalogs, which are becoming crucial in managing open data across organizations. This shift is also changing the landscape of data platforms, which are now seen as tools to drive business outcomes by leveraging governance catalogs to integrate various data types and analytics.

If Databricks were to have an IPO tomorrow, its market capitalization would probably be double that of Snowflake's.

Anyone still looking forward to the Databricks IPO? Seems like by the time they do finally IPO, they'll be late in their life cycle and the major growth phase will have passed. The public market will just serve as exit capital for those looking to cash out. Just take a look at Snowflake since it IPOed. Profitable tech companies now like Databricks, Snowflake, Stripe, etc. withhold IPOing for as long as they can, it seems they want to capture the major growth phase all to themselves.
