New Investor who heard of us word of mouth wanted us to try and get one of his flips back up and going. He was hoping to not need a new system replacement, I'd say we toom good care of him on this job 👍🏾

Up here in NY we use R44 which is a 100% replacement for R22 at any mixture. There's nothing wrong with getting a system going with any of these replacement gases and helping the customer save a little money rather than dump the entire charge . The EPA is making it difficult so that all that old equipment is changed out.

Oh yeah, I completely agree. I've never really had any issues with units when I've had to use them as a "drop in".

Besides being unethical, it makes the recovered refrigerant unrecyclable (and therefore possibly illegal) and should be destroyed when is is finally recovered from the system. Did you at least mark the system as having a mix of refrigerants?
@AB_HVAC
@AB_HVAC 4 ай бұрын
I marked it for MO99, and if R22 is already phased out meaning it's not being manufactured mixing the refrigerant will mean they have to get rid of it all...meaning less and less R22 on the market. Everyone already tries to get rid of R22 systems. AND with that unit being 23yrs old, compressor and evap coil being replaced, there's a possibility someone didn't put R22 back in there from those jobs. I used what I had. I'm not allowed to buy R22

you check from C to G if the fan is calling, not R to G
@AB_HVAC
@AB_HVAC 4 ай бұрын
If you check from R to G and it's 0v G is being energized, same way G to C reading 24v means G is energized. More than one way to catch a fish my guy
@Mo4Honesty
@Mo4Honesty 4 ай бұрын
@@AB_HVACif you measure R to G and you get 24v, fan is not calling. If you get 0v, fan COULD BE calling, or you have no power on R. There's 2 ways to get 0 and only one way to get 24. Also you want to know the ACTUAL voltage passing thru G in case the transformer is weak or there's some voltage drop in the wires before it hits the relay. So that's why C to G is better, since you're comparing against a known reference of 0.
@AB_HVAC
@AB_HVAC 4 ай бұрын
@Mo4Honesty if you have no power on R, you won't get 24v from G to C unless you're bypassing the Stat and going straight to the transformer. All I'm saying is if you're checking to see if a blower is running and you happen to check from R to G, you should read 0v but if you check from G to C it'd read 24v. Wasn't saying dude was wrong, just that there's another way to check for it
@Mo4Honesty
@Mo4Honesty 4 ай бұрын
@@AB_HVAC neither way is wrong, but G to R is inconclusive and gives you a less definitive answer. Suppose blower not running and R has no power and you check R to G and get 0v. You think G is energized but it's not. Alternatively, check C to G, get 0v also. Now you KNOW G is not energized, for whatever reason.

@Mo4Honesty I get that. I guess R to G would just let me know the thermostat is atleast working making the G call

what is your luck on dropping in a drop in with out recovery of old r22. what numbers do you see of subcool and super heat . does it work
@AB_HVAC
@AB_HVAC 4 ай бұрын
In all actuality it depends on the "drop in" I've had better luck with 422B (NU-22) than I have with 438A (MO99). And I'm basing this off of let's say a compressor changeout. I've found MO99 just runs colder but NU-22 is closer in temperature for my superheat. You could go back to those systems (without adjusting your gauges for those refrigerant and assuming it's R22) and find that the MO99 system is sweating and running a bit colder, but the NU22 you'd find closer in temperature
@AB_HVAC
@AB_HVAC 4 ай бұрын
But that's just how I see it in the field. And honestly, I can't recall one system we used a drop in on, and then come back to find it messed up the same compressor. I know one system fresh in mind that to this day, it's still a 2002 Goodman Heat Pump that I have added NU-22 to it and a UV Leak Dye/Sealant and we haven't been back to it for refrigerant issues.

Since you're just doing what your boss told you to do, how about you direct those questions to him, and let him answer those comments? The questions are obvious and that's why you knew they would be asked. What's not obvious is the possible answers. ( And for a top up, i don't even know why anybody doesn't just use r22. I mean, it's only slightly more expensive than the substitutes now, and for 1 or 2 pounds who cares about a few dollars?)
@AB_HVAC
@AB_HVAC 4 ай бұрын
Well I just meany that in the sense of the dude at the counter telling me there's no such thing as a drop in. And as far as the price, a drum of R22 at a local distributor is near 2k, where MO99 is 25% of that. Pricing per pound, there's a DRASTIC difference in price. I know exactly why we won't get R22 lol.
@Mo4Honesty
@Mo4Honesty 4 ай бұрын
@@AB_HVAC r22 is available at other distributors for much less than that, plus many contractors have a supply they bought much lower than even what they would need to pay for a new jug of mo99 with additional money out of pocket instead of already paid for.
@AB_HVAC
@AB_HVAC 4 ай бұрын
@Mo4Honesty that must be your area, but giver or take around $100 that price of R22 is insane where I'm at. So for companies that deal with home owners and they say "R22 is 300 a Ib, your unit might need 4Ib" it's a lot easier to sell a replacement that way. We just don't use R22 if the other refrigerant can closely get the same job done but cheaper
