Okay, this is awesome! I got my first slot car set probably 20 years ago, and have added to it a few times over the years. It's HO scale and the company that makes it is no longer in business nowadays. Compared to what I just watched, my slot car stuff is a baby's toy! I actually didn't know anyone took slot car racing this seriously. As I said, really awesome!

I just happened upon this video after a bit of searching as a result of watching some slot car drag racing videos, and I am totally amazed and so very happy to see that slot car racing has reached this level of competition and especially the detailed accuracy of the cars. I am now 68 years old, but back in the early to mid sixties I was totally immersed in slot car racing for about five years, starting with 1/64th scale, moving on to 1/32, and finally 1/24. At the peak of the sport, there were five shops with multiple tracks within 5 miles of my home (Bellaire Texas, a suburb of sorts in SW Houston) 1/24 ruled in that era, and oval, road courses, and even 1/4 mile tracks were all over the place. Sorts, GP, and stock car classes were prevalent at most locations. My favorite shop, Hobby Town, run by the dear Decker family, even had a 12 hour Nascar event in which you needed the old "wheat grain" headlights as the lights were turned off for 6 hours. We did not have the digital technology of today of course, but actually the cars otherwise were quite similar, except for the lack of suspensions and such. I always prided myself in having very detailed cars, some complete with highly detailed drivers,fabricated exhausts, roll bars, and used watch screws and fine telephone wiring to simulate fuel lines, spark plug wires, etc. which was pretty uncommon to see at that time. I have saved a few cars: a long nosed GT40 open (GTX 40 it was called I believe) and a '67 Lotus, both in factory livery, and a '36 Willis drag car. I eventually lost interest in the sport because in the search for higher speed all efforts were lost to build or race cars that resembled in any way actuall cars. Simple wedges grew to be the rule and tire dimensions were way off scale, and tire/track doping was common. Motor rewinds were unregulated, and let me tell you, a wedge bodied 3 volt motor running on 12V with doped sponge tires was shocking fast, twice as fast as my old, boring (to the masses) authentically detailed cars. Anyway, the next time I head over to Europe I am going to make it a point to attempt to witness one of these events. Can anybody please provide me with information that would provide me with race schedules or track locations! I can't wait to see this in action!
@johnny-S5 жыл бұрын
Hi, firstly thank you for your detailed comments about your experience in Slot car racing. I have to agree that, for me, it's all about the detail in the cars, and not just about outright speed - and this event supports that with a concourse competition as part of each event. The advent of digital technology has been a game changer here - and that is why I decided to film it. I've now covered the last 4 years of events - including some GT3 races which you will find on my channel (amongst my various full sized car videos!). As regards watching these events - it can be quite difficult as they are focused around the track and drivers and do not leave much room for spectators. That said there is always somewhere to sit, and everyone is very welcoming to anyone who is interested. There are only a handful of these events each year: the 24 hour race is usually held in April, then there are some GT3 events during the year - the next one is next week at Rockingham which I plan to cover on video (it's a brand new circuit too). You can follow the activities on the Digital Slot car Associations web site: www.officialdisca.com/ They also have a Facebook page. Thanks for watching. Kind regards, John

Thanks very much for the responses gentlemen. Since I made my initial reply I have been immersed in what is slot car racing today via KZfaq and continue to be absolutely amazed. Although it is obviously centered on the other side of the pond from me, there are apparently a few small pockets of activity here stateside, and from what I have seen so far quarter mile is king, but as far as road courses go, 1/24 analog still seems to rule, and the cars, especially the "hardbodies" are extremely similar, in almost every respect, to my versions of same. And this is after 50 years or so. Amazing! I could literally take any of my saved cars, put on modern wheels and tires, and hit the track!

It's good to see that slot car racing is still alive and not only that but it's improved. When I was a kid there was a local place I went to and it was my favorite thing to do on weekends. I won a bunch of competitions and improved my car with the prize money. Good memories.

I can't believe you guys do the full 24 hours. I figured the time would have been scaled to match the scale of the cars and track. This has been extremely interesting and entertaining. Are the teams required to use the same motors the entire race? I can imagine the heat buildup could be pretty serious.

I was in a twenty four hour race at the Luton Vauxhall slot car club house in the early seventies, memorable for being very tired, and cooling the motors off under the cold tap whenever it was felt needed, can’t remember where we finished but it took place on a custom built track, happy days for a slot car crazy sixteen year old.
@shaggybreeks Жыл бұрын
I was semi-pro in the late 60s. Several enduros. I don't remember changing motors ever, although we did practice for everything. It turns out that 24 hours is a long time for a human, but not for a slot car. You learn the track and then it's like meditation, and you can go for long periods of time without going off. Those cars are always driven hard, and they actually don't need to be hardened for a 24 hour -- in my experience, and to my surprise.

Back in the Late 70's, maybe very early 80's time period our local raceway held a "pro" type of driver 24 hour enduro on a commercial king track and there were actual "factory" backed teams racing from the likes of Parma, Champion, Trinity and Camen in attendance and racing the event. Slot racing was a lot bigger in many ways back then than it is today. The race went off well but after all was said and done the shop owner said because all that was involved hosting an event like this they would not ever do it again. Just like most hobby shops of that era that one has been closed down for 20 years or more.

I recall slot cars making a comeback of sorts in the Los Angeles area in the mid/late 1990s. Personally, I would like to see some sort of future hybrid R/C future where there are no slots, the cars are a bit slower, and have cameras, and the 'drivers' would sit in front of a screen and actually drive them. For 'fuel' stops, they would have to pull into a pit row and get charged up (I envision some sort of superfast charging like the Hot Wheels [or other brand] 1/64 scale cars have). But, that being said, watching this, I am impressed that the cars aren't doing seemingly 1200 MPH (scale) like other slotcar videos. I would like to see cameras inside cars, however.

Bit late but its digital control, similar to dcc on model railways. So the track is always live with an ac current. Signals are sent from the controller to the car its adresssing through the track and then a decoder in the car reads that and then controlls the motor. It allows multiple controllers to control multiple cars on each track

Can one enter a Batmobile or Night Rider Kitt car or does it have to be Toyotas, Ferraris, Vipers etc?
@johnny-S3 жыл бұрын
It has to Le Mans based cars I'm afraid - but if the rules of Le Mans start allowin Batmobiles then.....

Wow. I used to be a champ around 1967, and I gotta say that this looks really hard and impressive, and what we were all wishing for in some way or other. Glad to see the sport surviving and improving. Too bad it's all the same guys, mostly... ?

How often do you change tires? How about braids? I race at a track in Rochester, N.Y. Fantasy raceway. 1/24 hard body we call it, American body only. Track is 148ft long, road course.

That depends on how much punishment the car can take. These guys are repairing them constantly through the night - just like the real thing. Thanks for watching.

With all this time you might want to explain how they control these slot cars. It’s somewhat baffling how 16 cars can run simultaneously on 5 or 6 lanes. How do they pass how do they brake and accelerate ?
