1983 is a special year in Garry Kasparov's career. At that moment it had become clear to everybody - and in the first place to World Champion Anatoly Karpov - that Garry would become the challenger to the crown. That's where his problems began!
A simple intrigue, which was plotted by FIDE President Campomanes, the U.S.S.R. Sports Committee and the "competent authorities" who did not like at all that the "man of the system" Karpov could soon be taken out from the Chess Olympus by a freedom-loving, unpredictable and unconventional young champion. All this was described many times in the books of Kasparov himself, and in the texts of his contemporaries. But... It's one thing to turn the pages of the chess chronicle dryly and quite another to hear about it firsthand. The events of almost forty years ago are still fresh in Garry Kimovich's memory, and he remembers them with the same fervor as in the distant 1980s.
The Chess Olympiad in Lucerne, the first game with Korchnoi, the choice of an opponent in the cycle for the world championship and the match with Beliavsky. And then the same intrigue that put his match with Korchnoi on the brink of a breakdown... If it weren't for the unanimity of the chess world, which expressed its support for Kasparov in Niksic, and the sportsmanship of Viktor Lvovich, Garry might have never made it to Karpov.
"You're still young, wait some more", Kasparov was told without fanfare. But he didn't give up, he fought to the end. And... Thanks to an incredible turn of events, he made it!
About this and much more - in the eighth part of the conversation between Ilya Levitov and the 13th World Champion "24 Hours with Kasparov", an exclusive project of the Levitov Chess channel.
