There are some dinosaurs that have been pretty well-known for a while, with decent fossil remains, but for unfathomable reasons haven’t had a model made by one of the usual suspects. Pentaceratops is one such dinosaur.
Originally thought to have extra long epijugals that merit the description of “five-horned”, we now know that this wasn’t very unusual among ceratopsians. Still, one thing sticks out… that incredible long frill and resulting tall head. Finally, we have a nice representation from Haolonggood, and hence, my very first Pentaceratops model.
Other than some anatomical misses, both the detail and the paint apps are a wonderful credit to the star of the day, and it’s a happy day indeed for my ceratopsian collection to finally add this elusive dinosaur to the family!

Halonggood did it again. What an amazing surprise! This company deserves all the love and respect they can get for giving us these amazing figures. And every time, they deliver the best. And most importantly, they can give a fight to these other companies easily. The most intriguing part about their figures is the color scheme. No other company has that, and Halonggood is, in my opinion, the first company to use these complex color patterns. So hats off to them. And I can clearly see that this figure is quite large compared to their other offerings. That means the price goes up too. (That's the sad part.) Apart from the figure, I really think they will update their accuracy aspect because most of us collectors are adult collectors, and I'm sure these are not kids' toys. So I hope they will look into it. As always, another amazing and educational video, my dear sir. You are the best in the business, and we are so lucky to have a wonderful tutor like you. Thank you so much. And please enjoy your vacation. Be safe, and I wish you all the best ❤

I sure hope that the prices have gone up only due to size of the Pentaceratops and of course the most recent Apatosaurus! Otherwise, HLG would have lost its competitive advantage. I almost feel that HLG must have trawled through all the online comments about what people were complaining of about how companies and their offerings, and then come up with a combination that addressed just those points! So you see a combination of detail, colour schemes, paint application, and PRICE. Thank you, my trip was on the whole a successful one. I might share a little of it in the near future!

Love this Pentaceratops!! Haolonggood is becoming one of my favorite companies already. I’m a little worried about their previous figures running out of stock though, I also want the Ouranosaurus… 😅 Would’ve loved to see it alongside the Eofauna Triceratops too, you reviewed it too. Awesome job with the review as always! 👍🏻😎

Thanks, for your support and kind words! I feel that if HLG has a successful run, they will continue production. The only thing I worry about with late run productions is the drop in paint application quality. HLG makes them more affordable than other companies of similar or even worse standard. I would recommend you get just one first. The Ouranosaurus is surely a winner! I don't think I've ever actually officially reviewed the EoFauna Triceratops, but I don't have it with me at the moment.

@DinosDragons

FWIW, if I could get just one, it would be the black. The orange is too homogenous for my liking, although it _is_ striking as you can see!
@kwaziness
@kwaziness Жыл бұрын
I prefer the Black variant, as I feel that the sharing of bright colours on the frill with the body like on the Orange one makes it useless as display. For that same reason I don't really like BotM ceratopsian palettes since they don't highlight their frills. Interesting to see Papo's rendition rivals this in accuracy, with Haolonggood's having more defined scale detail and better limbs whereas Papo's with its dynamism retains the humpback and imo a nicer curve to the frill from the side angle. Weird how both of them messed up the divot in the top of the frill and have exaggerated ep3s 😭😭 Both of them have STELLAR paint apps and face sculpts, even though they are in visibly different styles. Another great upload!!
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Жыл бұрын
Exactly. There is something too homogenous about the orange that just takes away from the frill. If I could choose just one, it would be the Black. Indeed, I would not have guessed that the Papo would have any claim of superiority, but as you say, the lack of that distinctive hump does kill this one a little bit.

Excellent video - as always! This is such an exciting phase of Haolonggood's existence. I actually like very much the way that there is plenty of pattern detail on the Pentaceratops body as well as the frill. The frill still retains plenty of display value when viewed head on. As I'm not worried about scale in my collection, this isn't a problem for me. But I wish companies would be accurate in describing the scale of their model, whatever it comes out at. I really love both colour schemes - and yet again bought both. Enjoy your holiday and I look forward to another fine, measured and thoughtful review on your return.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Жыл бұрын
Indeed! If something isn't of the correct scale, putting the ever popular scales such as 1:35 just smack of laziness at best, deception at worst! What is sad would be enthusiasts, especially young ones, getting misinformed with an inaccurate picture of how these dinosaurs really looked like, especially in their relative proportions. The worst case I can think of is the CollectA Deluxe Styracosaurus. HLG colour schemes have been really pleasing. Both variants for this Pentaceratops and Ouranosaurus were hard choices to make. Thanks to their relatively lower prices I got them both. I hope that HLG continues on this trajectory! You've seen the HLG Apatosaurus by now and I can't wait to see what they come up with next! 😊

@@DinosDragons I'm expecting my Apatosaurus to arrive probably tomorrow. I went for the brown but found it a difficult decision, as I liked the grey/green as well. And I agree with you completely about inaccurately advertised scales misleading the young in particular. It would be so easy for companies to declare the true scale.

¡Gracias! Quizas compartir algo de mi viaje en el futuro. De hecho, siempre es controvertido cómo se reconstruye la musculatura de la pierna. Lovely review, thank you so much! I absolutely adore this model. The size and heft! A proper unit. In regards to the parietal embayment, could it perhaps be that it appears less shallow because of added skin, e.g. Just like potential added keratin on the epiparietals? Just a thought! Oh and lest I forget: all the best during your absence!

Thank you mate! It was a very fruitful trip, some of which I might share here in the near future! It is possible of course that soft tissue fills out dips, fossae, and other depressions. Who knows what muscle might have crossed it, to be covered by skin. Still, the entire area I imagine would be pretty bony, and in areas like that the skin tends to hug close. But it really isn't that big a deal when you consider the total package. In fact I think the lack of a more prominent 'hump' would bother people more.

Hahaha! Well I'm hoping someone will make a decent 1/35 Daspletosaurus. Who knows, if PNSO follows the same pattern they'll give us a string of tyrannosaurids. Though I see HLG as having another crack at a tyrannosaur. They must regain their honour after their T Rex fiasco! 🤣

Mine arrived and it is a pleasant surprise. The sculpt issues aside, the paint was very well applied(I went with the darker version). I had been anticipating doing a dark wash at minimum but the upper portions were already “washed”. The lower stomach/belly area is still plain and lifeless but that will get a wash. The Halonggood figures aren’t yet competitive enough to go toe to toe with PNSO but they could get there-Dicreosaurus…..
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Жыл бұрын
I think you hit it right on the head. As great as they're coming along, HLG still isn't on par with the PNSO models. Still, if they continue their trajectory, _AND_ maintain their affordable prices, I believe they are going to eventually bethe company of choice for most collectors who don't need the most subtle paint applications, the highest degree of sculpt, and closeness to the science. Even then, the last part is the easiest to fix, and if they get that down, they are certainly going to be neck to neck with PNSO. What I worry about mainly is some new CEO with a new change in direction messing things up. Hopefully, we can get a good many more models from them before that happens!

@@DinosDragons you’re most welcome. Yes, the Pentaceratops was appreciated for the effort on HLG’s part. Improvement? Sure. But it’s still good. Yes. Still waiting on the Apatosaurus. I knew there were minor issues(aren’t there always?) but it still looked pretty good. As to chinasaurs…..I work a job where, not daily, but frequently, I have to hear slurs as to there being a Made in China sticker on a product usually followed by a “I’m not buying that” or something as egregious. I live in a part of America that was always touted as progressive. What I found, since moving here, is that there’s a higher degree of racism and classism than when I lived in Virginia. The whole ball of wax, twine, entangled whatever has been continuously bothersome to me since the late 70’s when I had a Chinese friend from junior high who was treated poorly by some kids who, at that irrational time, decided all Asians were communist Vietcong and needed to hear hatred. That still translates very heavily, today. And, for that, if I could, I’d apologize for the idiocy of it. It’s a more complex puddle than I’ll ever be able to see clearly through. Unfortunately, it’s not bad enough that racism is still prevalent, now we have to wrestle with outlandish gender politics. Apologies. I got on a soapbox. It’s Memorial Day weekend and I’m having a bit of a party. It’s a day that means something to me. Most notably, the rights and freedoms of all people. Without losing our jobs because we didn’t call a female “them” because she doesn’t “identify” as female. I studied biology. What do I know? Apparently it’s all wrong. Crap! Back on the soapbox.
