update : Trick: If you do not have an Easy Shackle Change Tool handy and need to change out a shackle, you can open the lock, install the Z-bar upside down (dot is not visible any more), insert the cylinder into the padlock and rotate the key to the open position. Hold under tension and you will be able to pull the shackle out. There are some locksmiths that were under the impression that they use the Z-bar for key-retaining and for non-key-retaining they just flip the Z-bar around. This did work OK on Series 1 but not Series 2

Enjoy your tutorials very much. I am learning much about locks that I almost never get to pick or inspect. Very few good European locks around for me to pick. And most are very expensive to buy new. You teach and I learn. Thank you.

Thanks... some of these locks are pricy, but most of mine are the product of ebay bargain hunting or trades. It takes some of the sting out of the collection.

@@lockpickinglawyer Was it solely due to the presence of master wafers? Newbie questions : 1) Why putting master wafers in the upper part of the core? 2) Is the Schlage 300 series core C keyway would be harder to pick or it only depends on the pins installed? Thank you!

I have the exact same lock (Abus 83CS/55) but the keyway on mine - bought in 2018- has an different keyway, making it harder to pick.

Hi LPL, I bought one of these a couple of years ago, we've used it at work until I last week after I got into researching locks and chains mainly for my boys bike, bought some picks and locks and after a couple of days thought I'd go for the "paragon" I thought I'd bought back then - I got so outraged at the ease of picking the lock I got that I bought a video camera, two new locks (one abus plus crred to replace the original and another 83cs/55 as a reality check) then started a youtube channel (no viewers other than me so far, but that's not what its there for). Interestingly, my first Abus was also 5/6 pins, all of the top pins were identical to yours, the lowers all seemed to start out as a long spool, the shorter ones turned down into "T-pins" from the top of the spool. If I'd seen your video first I might not have made mine (but I was so annoyed I probably would have to be honest) - if you're interested it's kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMqolZt2nJeXaKc.html

Nice video... subbed for some more good stuff. Notably, your 83cs/55 would be vastly improved by rekeying with better bitting.

I always wonder when looking at Master Keyed locks if the actual Master key to the whole system is just a single height bitted key like all 1 cuts or 3 cuts or something like that. It seems like all of the keypin stacks in this video could have been balanced to such a degree that it might be the case. What would scare me is if someone was master keying a whole system where the master was literally just a key blank. Yikes. Great video though and keep up the good picking.

Very nice pick, I will have to get that series of Abus. I am intrigued on how the Z bar works, so best way to understand it is to examine it in action of course. Well that's what I am telling my wife, hope she goes for it. lol

Nice picking on this great looking lock. I don't understand why manufacturers use these wide open and straight keyways. The shape with the warding is for key-control, I believe, but does not affect picking. I my opinion a nasty, curved, narrow keyway is a great measure against picking. What do you think - why didn't they choose a better keyway?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Blocking access to the pins is the single most effective anti-pick feature out there, and nasty paracentric keyways are one of the most simple, cost-effective ways restrict access. I don't fully understand why better keyways are not more common. I suspect that practical considerations get in the way. Paracentric keyways can lead to keys that are weak (bend/break easily) and have sharp edges... two things that consumers probably don't like. They are probably more expensive to produce (both locks and keys), which consumers are not willing to pay for. Most of that is guessing.

the spiral snail lock does not require any existing picking tools as it does not have a core to require them.

good job mate, hay correct me if I'm wrong but if you install the Z bar so the black dot is facing up instead of down, it also makes it non key retaining and you won't loose it. (but that might just have been with the earlier red dot ones.)
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I always thought that also, but I recently ran across a lock that wouldn't work with the Z bar in upside down...

The new ones with the black dot go into shackle-ejection mode if the Z bar is installed facing the core.

nice pic. Did this lock come with the master key? Perhaps thats why Master lock Company calls them self master. Because they're so easy to pick, similar to a lock with mastering wafers in it....

Trying to pick mine which I was received as gift without keys, but without success after many hours =\ The best what I get is deep false set and when start to deal with spools at pin 3 loose all other no mater which hook I use. So as final solution I will drill hole to remove pin 3 and try again, not pretties solution but sometimes is only possible.

Would a slide hammer pull the core straight out of the bottom do you think I noticed the larger lock has a drill plate and this one does not ?
@projectyardinc4256
@projectyardinc4256 4 жыл бұрын
So I recently picked up this hobby and I can't seem to figure it out. The false sets won't let go if I drop into one. I'm using this exact type of lock and I have to completely restart. I also can't get my tensioner to hold the lock properly. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Good thing to note, be EXTREMELY careful when removing the core (and reinserting). If you rotate the cylinder accidentally you will end up with that detent up in the bible and it's nearly impossible to get it out.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
Good point. That's a big design flaw IMO. There is nothing that stops Abus from making the detent larger than the driver holes, but they chose to use the little one that can easily lock the core up.
@ZanHecht
@ZanHecht 5 жыл бұрын
I think they assume that people will use the window instead of removing the core.

Well, this is disappointing. This is about the size padlock I need. The price is right, $50 on Amazon. Hardened steel and good shackle protection, but not pick resistant. Replaceable core, but not a standard form factor.

Usually they're steel ball bearings which will spin and deflect your drill bit, making it very difficult to drill out the core.

What is counter rotation? I felt it sometimes, now I'm curious why
@parri0923
@parri0923 3 жыл бұрын
Where the upward movement of the key and/or driver pins causes the flat-ish edges of security pins to be forced against another flat-ish edge on the lock bible entrance which creates counter-rotation on the lock cylinder. Lightening up a bit on the tension will allow the cylinder to counter-rotate just enough to allow the edges of the security pin to pass into the bible entrance.
