I've been using the Variable ND filter from JJC for the entire length of my career and was really eager to see how it performed against PolarPro Peter McKinnon variable ND.
This is just my personal opinion and experience and i hope you'll find the video useful.

That is mostly because it's polarized so it removes the cold blue reflections. It has a better bokeh tho which is significant. Also in case you are shooting over coated windows or LED displays, the polarized filter is extremely problematic because it makes ghosts over these surfaces.

I got all five right, and I have to say, I personally preferred the look of the JJC a bit more on almost every shot, and that was before I even confirmed what filter was used. It was pretty easy to tell due to the slightly warmer tones of the JJC, as you mentioned, but personally I liked the look! This video was super helpful, I definitely know which ND filter I'll be buying!

The biggest giveaway between the two was the highlights, the JJC, at least in the clips you showed, felt a bit flat. But not a deal breaker, there could be a bunch of variables (pun intended) how the footage could have been processed, exposure, color grade etc. The PMVD is a luxury item and a nice to have, but for 99% of most shooters, a wider range variable ND is better for run and gun shooting. Thanks for your insight on these Peter!

JJC was the first ND-filter I bought mainly because it was affordable. I have tested much more expensive filters since but always come to the conclusion that the JJC is the best. Peter recommended the JJC 1,5 years ago after I got it and I still agree with his opinion on this filter. Will buy another one for convenience so I don’t have to change everytime I change camera. I also had to raise the shutter speed on my second camera when doing a two camera interview because i sold the other way more expensive filters I had since they were not as good as the JJC. This test confirms my impression of the JJC!

Love to see a comparison, though you did not test the filters in enough use cases. Especially when used agains direct light, cheaper filters tend to show a significant drop in contrast as well as ghosting and flaring. Another factor - difficult to test though - is the durability of the coating and if it has certain properties like being antistatic. I'm personally using the B+W variable ND, which isn't cheap either but works great in nearly every scenario. Disclaimer: There are just two ways of making a variable ND filter: stacking two polarized filters, so depending on the rotation angle against each other they cut out light. Second option is similiar to having an LC Display and decreasing the transparancy by applying voltage, as it is done internally in the Sony FX9. So with any mechanical variable ND you will get a polarizing function, as well as the cross effect close to the maximum angle. If you need more stops, there is no way of getting around of combing two polarizers with fixed ND values, like they did in the other PolarPro PM filter. Still a decent test that shows that you can actually save a lot of money depending on your use case, thank you Peter :)

I hate to be that KZfaq commenter, but I think a couple things need to be said. Variable ND Filters are 4 layers with 2 CPL filters. The cross pattern occurs due to the overlap of the CPL. If a cross pattern doesn't occur its because there is a range limiter on the filter. 2-400 is the ND Number, the Polar Pro Filter is 2-5 stops. Take the log base 2 of 2 and 400 to get the number of stops: from 1 to 8.64 at the highend. You have 3 extra stops of density. That's really big and is why the one JJC filter is so much darker than the Polar Pro. Still great value as demonstrated.

The filter also comes with a soft case that has a microfiber cloth built in. It also comes with cool stickers, a stand-alone microfiber cloth, and a few other little knickknacks that make it a really satisfying purchase. You definitely feel as though you paid for a premium product. The image looks amazing! It’s the perfect filter for a cloudy day or a daytime interior with lots of windows. I also like that there is no x-pattern when you open or close it all the way. Is it overpriced? Probably. Still a lot great product with a very intentional design.

I bought the PM one before seeing this. I may have bought the other one if I'd seen this beforehand, but I don't regret my purchase. I recognize the quality inherent in the PM one. I like that there's pure neutrality of color, and the filter is super tough. I use it almost as a lens protector because it's so resistant to everything. It's a very convenient filter that comes with a ton of convenient, premium items like the hard case, the extra lens cloth, lens cap and the soft case with the built-in lens cloth. Is that worth over $100 more? That's up to you. The PM filter has literally no problems that I or many other reviewers can find. Whatever it promises, it delivers on. The 2-400 is certainly more versatile, but has a few issues here and there. It's hard to justify the price on the PM one though with the alternative being so much cheaper. I love quality, and the PM one does all it promises to do. I'll probably not by the 6-9 though because of what I spent on the 2-5.

Got both PolarPro 2-5 and 6-9 for 300 usd so I’m happy and love the results. The Nisi and B+W filters are both in the 150-250 usd range as well on VNDs. For the money the JJC is a great option I’d probably go if I was purchasing my first filter. I’ve tried some cheap once before (not JJC) and had all kinds of color casts so decided to buy a premium one and be done with it. Although having a 3k usd lens buying a filter for 200 dollars doesn’t sound to shabby. Also have a B+W 2-5 and really love that one as well but cost me 200 usd so they are very pricey too

@volt416
@volt416 3 жыл бұрын
@@WilfriedSDV all Variable NDs are made of two opposite facing polarizers. When you turn it to adjust the filtration, it also turns the polarizer (you can't control them separately) That's actually also what causes the X pattern (it has nothing to do with the focal length and is unavoidable with VNDs). All VNDs have a usable range, that's why the Polarpro is only 2-5 stops with hard stops. Even though this filter advertises a ND2 - ND400 reducing in light, the actual usable portion of that is much smaller (probably similar to the polarpro). If you want that polarizing effect, I suggest buying a separate polarizer and stacking it. This video is honestly kinda ill-informed and misleading. If you are looking for an actual budget VND + Polarizer, I suggest the K&F Concept filters, that's what I use. You can get them on amazon for a similar price, just make sure you get the ND2 - ND32 and NOT the ND2 - ND400. Hope this helps!

The Peter version is the Beats headphones of filters, overpriced brand name and you’re paying mostly for the packaging. It’s an ND filter, no one cares about presentation.

@Maxim Rusu The presentation is a *bonus*. The results show the quality more, in my humble opinion. I think it's safe to say no one carries around the box it came in.

I was able to tell on all after the first one. The cheaper one just looked a bit worse - the colors were more dirty in the background blurs that made it quite easy to spot.

My guess would be that you'd see a more noticeable difference in high-res photos, between the two filters. Video is relatively low res, but when you shoot for National Geographic (I don't!), every little helps. Great video!

I got them all right, the obvious detail is that JJC has much more vignetting on the corners, but I use one from K&F a cheap one and I`m happy with it.

I've watched a few of your videos now, and for weeks you kept reminding me of someone, and I couldn't for the life of me think who it was. It's more your mouth shape and the way you form your words with your mouth and teeth. It finally clicked today, you remind me of the late and great Steve Jobs! Well, I think it's more your mouth/teeth...have you ever had this mentioned before? Hope I didn't offend. P.S, still shopping around for a good Variable ND for my A6300 :P

LOL with the fumbling around with the PMVND filter. I felt that anxiety through the screen.

From what I've seen, Peter's filter is a decent ND but shines the most in its mist effect. Being able to faithfully render more subtle highlight blooms on top of being a 2-in-1 vND.

I distinguished correctly which one was JJC from the photo comparison. All I had to do was focusing on details in the middle. Big difference. Clear difference, if u know what to look for.

I've never used filters but am in the market for one. I guessed JJC in every test that you did. I like the coloring of that one. So will be looking for a JJC.

All right on the test. The PM one gave out a slight tealish tint on the highlights. Actually preferred the cheaper ones image.

I did get them all right because of the color difference, as you mentioned, JJC being warmer. I also prefer the warmer tones but usually that is something I do in post.

I guessed 100%. JJC is more yellowish. Easy to notice without any effort. I prefer JJC from your shots, but I use Hoya ($120) - it looks similar to JJC.

I gravitated to the JJC in your comparisons more, probably due to the slight increase in warmth you'd mentioned.
