24th April 1965: The final "Match of the Day" of the 1964/65 season and the Division One Championship can be won by three teams. Leeds United (at home to Sheffield United) top the table by one point and still have two games to play while Manchester United have three matches to complete and so must be seen as favourites. For Chelsea, playing away at Aston Villa, this is their last game of the season and a win is essential as they must hope that the other sides slip up. With the cameras at Old Trafford for this vital League decider to see United face next week's FA Cup Finalists Liverpool it's certainly worth noticing the difference between the attitude of both players and crowd compared to a similar game played in the modern era.

Busby seemed to have a thing for playing full-backs as emergency centre forwards; Cantwell in this game, Francis Burnes I remember doing that, and even won his first League title with John Aston up top.

Amazing to think that Utd played again on the 26th and 28th to finish the League. And carried on playing in the old Fairs Cup until mid June.

The middle of that pitch leaves a lot to be desired, but player skill level is impressive. Two European footballers of the year and one who will be.

The first year of BBC2 Colour. This was an experimental time of getting this channel on air. 99% of UK only had bw TV. A colour TV cost a fortune, about £300.

Tavy@ a dont thinck that george best had that great vision of being able to see other players around him in and around the penalty box. Thats why alot of his passes were bad. He was more of a destroyer of deffences, a marador if you like. He could beat 6 players on one run and took great delight in doing so, and would often go back again to beat a man twice and invite players to try and bring him down!

MotD was shown on BBC2 since it was a new channel & in colour unlike BBC 1 & ITV & the BBC wanted to get people to watch BBC 2 programs so they started by showing football & unbelievably snooker Pot Black great in colour but 99% only had bw tv, thus snooker was hilarious🤣 the white & black ball was fine but the other balls were shades of grey with Ted Lowe commenting using the colours names!

Tommy Lawrence distribution made every punt a 60/40 ball in utd favour why did'nt coaches realise in those day's that the advantage was with you from short throw to your right or left back or whoever it's not rocket science.

Because defenders were supposed to defend they were not wing backs like modern players and they were coached to boot the ball up field and allow the forwards to fight for the ball.

Now where's ma rattle! Nice seeing ye olde Motd. It's like its all in slow motion compared to today's turbo charged players & ball. From this period right until the end of the century you could appreciate the delicacies of the football artistians. Now its all at 100mph with a inflated ping pong ball. Same with snooker. How I enjoyed Thorburn v Griffiths Zzzzzzzzzz...

Correct Mr o'Flynn👍.Today's game is for Pink shirts,'Woke' players,Diving&faking and cheating and of course we mustn't forget the 'Knee bend'. And me personally I think Fifa and Uefa would like to see Parity reached wth the Women's game? .But back then(in the real world)&up until the early 90's the game was played by Men!!. .And when I watch Rugby,u realize they still do exist!👍

Tavy@ charltons control and passing is pure genius. Hes the greatest passer of a ball i have ever seen. george best has no chance against 6ft2" ron yates. Yates is at least 6 inches bigger all round and 5 stone heavier. He just nudges best a tiny bit and best goes sliding 12 yards along the grass. And best here is age 19 and been a regular for two years, but you would think it was his first game? It doesnt make sense why he was no where near a great player to be the greatest in the world 3 years later, becouse at age 17 you already have all the skill and control and a great passer of the ball becouse like george best you can see his skill is just pure raw natural ability, the ball loved george lol and wanted to be passesd to him, i had to laugh when a much older man told me that becouse he saw best at hampden in the flesh and at old trafford. He said "for at least 5 years he just ran scotland into the ground, he did it to us all the time, i was at hampden in 1969 when it rainend heavy all day and night, i was age 17 at the time and he scored this great goal that was disallowed becouse the ball came to him so fast he just let it hit his thy then it hit the mud then he put it away, it was one of the best goals i had seen i was looking strait at him from the south stand at only 30 yards away and he never used his hand, we all saw it. So did the lines man see it he was ten yards infront of me, but by this time best had took the piss out of that many teams in europe and for n,ireland that alot of the continental refs hated him. Best went mental" Maradona and pele were alot better players at age 19 by miles. And why cant george even take a corner? Hes crossing the ball like a low pass at 2 foot high or hes just crossing it too high and out of play as he puts it over the bar a million times. He was just an average player up until 1966,67 season. Then he came on brilliantly. A believe hes trying to score from a corner kick? But he did do it in 1971 against ipswich as he curled the ball over the keeper and it went in off the back post. But after ten years and a million times of trying it, it was more like luck than skill. A used to try it as well, if it was really windy a would judge it by hitting the ball up high and further out so the wind would carry it into the goals. In one game the wind was so bad a just aimend ma corner up so high at about 40 feet and towards the outside of the box and all we could do was watch and wait as the wind brought it down and intowards the top corner but some how the keeper managed to get to it just to tip it over the bar, it really was a great save. So bobby robson told george his was a fluke and george said al do it again in the second half. So best tried it but it hit the cross bar. So bobby had watched best try this for so long and after a million times he scores one but misses a million? So if he scored even 3 or 4 it would be more skill than luck. But you really have to say it was luck. A hit the cross bar alot too. When a keeper is 6ft to 6ft3 and theres two men on a post each and 5 defenders and the keeper in the middle if you think of it and even better look at it when your about to try it, you know the odds dont look good and you will need a bit of luck. A have scored from a corner kick the fly way or smart way lol a just put the ball down then as the players were all shouting at who to pick up and mark i just hammerd the ball as hard as i could along the grass about 2 yards out and it went in off a defenders leg near the front post a did that a few times, thats easier. But its down as an own goal? But who cares if you score. But that takes alot of skill, becouse one you need to be able to hit the ball very hard and basicly in a strait line and keeping it down so it doesnt go above knee level, becouse the higher it is the easier it is to clear or even just stop it dead then clear it. But at 6 inches high thats different, plus your better letting them see you take corners alot first and just cross them over as normal at head height then later they never expect you to hit a corner like that? They believe you miss hit it and got an in off wich happens alot. Maradona is the greatest i have saw taking a corner and scoring from them. I think he did it twice for napoli and once for boca juniors. But best was a better all round player than pele and maradona and braver, that was one of the first things i noticed about best, how brave and hard he was at going in for a ball, even with his head at 4ft high and a hard fast ball with 4 players ready to put there laces through it and best scored. I thought did he just do what i saw there? He must be mad? Insane, or brilliant. Rip george

The play looks slower but wasn't as there was more space back then as neither team were coached to push up to the half way line for offside and compress the pitch, that didn't happen 'til the 80's. Kids weren't coached from a young age then as they are now, they learned their skills themselves playing in the streets and schools and only went to pro clubs after they left school when their skills had been spotted by scouts. Two teams of all british players here, no one diving for free kicks and penalties, no theatrical histrionic goal celebrations, you were expected to stick a penalty away. Modern players are coached from childhood and therefore are all Deli Ali clones and if they can't beat a defender with a step over while running in a straight line they fall over for the free kick. The only exception is Messi which he why he looks so good and why the modern coached zonal defender can't cope with him. Back then every team had a ball payer who could take people on and create space, it's a lost art today because of coaching. God I hate coaching, it came from the USA and it's killed every sport as a spectacle because all they care about is money.

Vmax4steve Well said. Modern football as squeezed the ball players ( the fantasy player, as the Italians call them ) out of modern football with the manic squeezing of spaces the offensive players play in. The block gegenpress of two - three players pressing in unison, the player in possession of the ball & the flat back four pressing high to further squeeze spaces or dropping off again in unison, like a moving wall, as made the modern game, more of ball retention, short passing. Pass-pass-pass-pass game. Messi is the only ball player that's been able to buck the trend, as you rightly said. And even then, as seen at world cups. The opposition gegenpress him out of existence. If you watch Messi vs Belgium 2014 world cup match, it's quite eye opening. Belguim either pressed him in groups of three players pressing altogether. Or the pressing players cut off his passing angles. I doubt the impact Maradona had at the 1986 world cup, he'd have at modern world cups, because of all of this. The time & spaces he had to work his magic back then.Have all but dried up, in the modern game.

U made some Interesting and insightful points..Good analysis, but I would also throw in the "Bosman ruling"! The"Pendulum" has swung way to far now, that the players move around like their playing Monopoly, the teams have no time to build any kind of rapport, chemistry (call it what u will,) and continuity .If they stay at one Club for 3 yrs now, that's viewed as a long time!..

@@jerryoshea3116 Good point, you can also blame the Reagan and Thatcher decade for influencing society to be more selfish, the rise of satellite and cable tv, football agents and the spiralling transfer fees and wages due to multinational investment for the decline in football playing standards along with the 'Bosman' ruling. I know many players are sold on rather than allow their contracts to run full term, but if there were a wage cap like there used to be then players wouldn't have a financial incentive to move. Maybe 50 grand a week tops would be OK, many clubs can pay that for their top players, after all how much money does one actually need. Romolu Lukaku seems to have his career run by his agent, the wives and children will suffer from all this moving around. Families need stability and football clubs managers like Matt Busby used to be father figures for the players themselves, creating loyalty and devotion, that's gone now that we have directors of football hiring and firing players and first team coaches determining play on the field with which ever players the director has hired for that season. The director of football is never blamed for bringing in poor or the wrong players, the first team coach (manager) is always the one who takes the hit when it fails, and there's a culture among directors of football to bring in players based entirely on statistics. This I believe was the case with Paul Pogba, who failed at UTD and was sold on but his stats at Juventus made it look like his sale was a mistake and he was bought back at an inflated fee only for it to be obvious what a lazy self centred git he actually is.
