Castlevania symphony of the night would always be number 1 on my list next to Aria of Sorrow, followed by Hollow knight. The feeling of discovering the spell accidentally in symphony of the night was one the best things in the game, aria of sorrow was definitely unique of the castlevania games, hollowknight made sure its name is known for having quality content even with dlc's ,

@@neme6bennot true. Hollow knight lacks the same level of artistic detail of both those other games. SOTN has a superior art style, rpg aspect, atmosphere, and obviously soundtrack because that game has one of the greatest soundtracks in any videogame. It only is worse than hollow knight in gameplay mechanics and enemies/bosses and lore/story. They’re both great games in different aspects. You’re making it sound like hollow knight is objectively better than SOTN and AoS, which is just not true

My only criticism is the fact that the footage for Hollow Knight... isn't Hollow Knight. It is the footage of its upcoming sequel "Hollow Knight: Silksong." /:| However, I am looking forward to the sequel as much as the next Hollow Knight player out there.

I discovered the Shadow Complex recently and am playing it right now. And I have to say, I absolutely love the game!!! The design of the complex, all the gadgets you gradually acquire and exploring of the complex, everything is perfect and very satisfying!!!

For me the best will always be Super Metroid. I remember the countless hours spent inside the mesmerizing ecosystem of this masterpiece. It was in 1996 on my Super Nintendo. I then revisited it a dozen times over the years.

Agreed. The music, the isolating alien atmosphere, the graphics are still amazing to this day.. That intro, everything in-between & that epic ending....SOTN is def 2nd for me!

Super Metroid was far more ahead of its time as it came out earlier and has more balanced/fun gameplay. SotN is a very fun game with a ton of content but incredibly unbalanced with a non-existent difficulty curve. Aria has much better gameplay.

Doesn't it seem redundant to use all the metroid and castlevania games in your lists of favorite metroidvanias? I do not include the any of the titles which spawned the genre, because they are the reason for the genres existence so they are pretty much automatically on top... catch my meaning?

This is a great list! My only tweak would be, there’s a distinct lack of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse here 😢awesome to see someone else recognising Salt and Sanctuary for how good it is though!

Nice video, Some of the games are highly interesting, I'm playing now Blashphemous, it's a little bit difficult, raging, but good game. But my advice, if anyone didn't played Ori franchise, it's really time to do it, it's one if I can say, THE BEST metroidvania games I played in years, great graphics, nice music, and a very good story, play the first Ori (Blind forest) then the second one (will of the whisps) to fully enjoy the game. Next, I think that I will play Hollow Knight, it's overwhelmengly positive game on steam (btw you put the trailer of the second Hollow Knight : Silksong in your video, everybody is waiting for its release)

Have you thouroughly played both games? If so, I humbly disagree. HK has better enemy scaling, bosses that require you learn how to fight them, the enemies don't respawn as soon as you leave the room and you're not flung 15 miles every time you get hit. In SotN, The upside-down castle is really rough in terms of pacing and enemy difficulty, there's too many unnecessary item types, having to throw out an item to use it feels archaic and it's too easy to just grind levels and trivialize all the bosses after a while. I also loved SotN but, without the nostalgia goggles, it's a pretty flawed and aged masterpiece. I'm curious to hear what do you think makes HK the lesser of the two. Cheers!

@@hihyou Yes, I played both (more than 3 times). -First: HK is based on Zelda 2 and Metroid, not on Castlevania, as games based on SOTN are RPG, and HK is not an RPG, it is a Hack and a Dungeon Explorer like Zelda, and platform by Z2. - Second: SOTN is not a game loved by nostalgia, people should stop thinking that everything that is acclaimed, important and iconic is Overrated. because it is not, I know the flaws, it is not perfect, but it is an incredible game and all its merits are deserved, it is not pure nostalgia. - Third: The reason why HK is not better than SOTN is because HK is not perfect either. It has many defects in Combat, the Magic System and especially the Charm system. - Practically you will only use the Nail, you will only use healing spell, not attack Spells and upgrades don't help. - Some Charms Sucks, some take up a lot of space, others are useless, and others should be a Permanent Buff. - The bosses of the Dream World are annoying, you have to take a long boring path to get there. SOTN has more varied combat, there are several ways to play and fight, and you are not forced to grind. that's why HK is not better than SOTN. ok, I don't want to convince you, I just explained the reason, feel free to disagree

There aren't a lot of games in any genre that are better than SOTN. The only "metroidvania" that even has a claim to being as good is Super Metroid. And i still think it's a notch below SOTN.

SOTN is barely a metroidvania. It’s not even the best Igavania. Hollow knight is better 100% unless your only criteria is nostalgia.

One of the Metroidvanias I quite enjoyed in recent years is Carrion as it's very atypical and different to most other games in the genre, in that you play as a Lovecraftian monster, but the progression is very Metroidvania-like as you have to acquire new abilities in order to gain access to new areas. Aside from this, other Castlevania games (besides Symphony of the Night) will always hold a special place in my heart, particularly Aria and Dawn of Sorrow.

Wow, I found several good games that I should try, thank you for presenting them, sometimes there are games that were not popular due to lack of promotion, here it is clear, some games I knew about while others I had never heard of, for example Aeterna Noctis and Moonscars, I think they are very good games and I had never seen them in a compilation, and Metroid Dread clearly must be a masterpiece, thanks friend

meh i hated the idea of when you die you have to kill that enemy to get all your powers back...i dont like roguelites. I died in the worst spot possible thats impossible to get powers back mid game so I could never advance farther into the game lol

Nothing comes close to Symphony of the Night or Super Metroid. There are a lot of good games in this genre, but lets not get carried away. Those are the two best. And i would argue that Symphony is actually better than Super Metroid. Which sounds crazy, but i think its objectively true.

Just because a game is old and a 'classic,', doesn't mean it's better. Give me Death's Gambit, Aeterna Noctis, Blasphemous 1 and 2, Dead Cells and Hollow Knight ANY day over SotN and Super Metroid. That's not me getting 'carried away,' that's me having an opinion that these games are simply better. Also, get out of here with your usage of 'objectively.'

Afterimage, Aeterna Noctis, and Grime are all way too low on this list imo. And Super Metroid, Pronty, and Lone Fungus deserve to be in there. But it’s a great list and a nice walk down memory lane. Love watching any of these greatest mv videos

I'm really surprised but really glad at the same time that Salt & Sanctuary is in the list, the character may look like ass, but the armors, weapons, and places look real good, music, and aswell as the gsmeplay. Although being on NG+2 is pure hell. (I Recommend using magic even tho I'm pure melee)

One Metroidvania game that I like is Shadow Complex. I don’t know Shadow Complex and Hollow Knight are games that tricked me into thinking I like metroidvania games.

I did not like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (not my cup of tea), and I absolutely loved Metroid Dread. I found it ironic that you put them close together. Hollow Knight is indeed number one, and it's not even close. The footage you showed was not Hollow Knight, though, but its sequel... Silksong.

You're out of your mind if you think Blasphemous 2 is better than the original. It's too easy. Cutscenes are awful. Veredicto is broken. Platforming is dumbed down. Music and bosses are forgettable. Constant handholding with quest markers. I could go on and on. The game is a complete downgrade.

@@potatopower2144you need to replay Blasphemous 1 again if you think Blasphemous 2 is somehow easier. Really the only slightly challenging boss in the first game is the lady with the scythe that you fight after collecting the bones. All the other ones are like challenging for like 1 or 2 attempts until you learn their moves and then they are easy. Blasphemous 2 bosses are more complex and also some of them have three phases so I don't see how that's any easier.

Vi jogos excelentes na sua lista, mas colocar como melhores metroidvania de todos os tempos acho q vc forçou de mais, vc deixou jogos q são referencias para o estilo de fora da lista, e colcou alguns na lista q são bem fracos, mas sendo sua opinião eh totalmente valido, não podemos negar q nessa lista tem alguns jogos muito bons, o mais justo seria o primeiro lugar ser Symphony of the Night ou super metroid pois fora os jogos q são responsaveis pelo estilo "METROIDVANIA", resumindo, sua lista teve algumas indicaçoes excelentes, mas pra min forçou em colocar como os melhores e pelo rank

Think this list is great if the title were changed to “for the Nintendo switch” as most of these games are amazing for that platform. But an “all time” list would likely contain a lot more older gen titles

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say the reason I prefer roguelikes to Metroidvanias is because Metroidvanias give you the weapons you NEED to beat the game, roguelikes give you the weapons you can beat the game with

I've played just some games in your list. I disagree in some positions. I think: 1 - SOTN / Hollow Knight - Tie. 2 - ENDER LILIES - So close to the 1. 3 - Bloostained 4 - Blasphemous - Well designed and fun to play but have some annoying and unfair parts. 5 - Ori 1 & 2 - Graphic and sound are fantastic but gameplay is far from 1-4. I personally don't think Dead Cells is metroidvania. It should be a rougelite game? It's a great game though.

SO GLAD you put Salt and Sanctuary on 9ver the sequel. The 2nd was a disappointment, while the first is imo, the best indie ever made, obviously the best 2D soulslike, probably the best Soulslike not made by From Software...all while being made by 1 guy (though his wife did do the art in the game, he did everything else from the design, coding, and even audio and sound effects. Absolutely insane). I used to not play indies back in the day, it was Salt and Sanctuary that changed how I looked at them, and now several are among my favorite games ever...Hollow Knight being one of them. Shadow Complex was a good Metroidvania I played as 1 of my first indies...trying to remember the other indie I played alongside S&S that I loved...not a Metroidvania, but it helped me see how awesome indies could be...DEADLIGHT Directors Cut...what a great game that was. Indies probably make up 40% of my gaming now.

hollowknight e Blashphemous são espetaculares mas coloca-los a frente de Castlevania symphony of the night e Super Metroid é meio insano, são os melhores metroidvania de todos os tempos com toda certeza

🤔always that “Metrovania” was from “Metro”iod series due to explorations and Castle”vania” (More specifically SOTN) so including it in this list was 🤷🏻💫redundant IMP. But overall a useful and great list of “Metrovania” games 💪🏼🙌🏼

IMO Metroid Prime is the greatest all time, Unless this list is just going strictly 2-D Metroidvanias i think you dropped the ball here, But after that I'd put in Hollow Knight, Then probably Castlevania SOTN & Super Metroid.

This list leans a little too heavy into the newer gothic medieval castlevania style games. Would have loved to have see Shadow Complex on there or maybe the GBA Castlevania games and also,.... no Super Metroid? wtf

Is Dead Cells even a true Metroidvania? yea, it took some inspirations from The metroidvania genre but it doesn't have the features that make it one, like exploration, backtracking and gaining new abilities to access previous inaccessible areas...

No its not exactly a metroidvania but it shares elements of those games. It's more rouguelike and sequential, no items will stop you from beating the game however there are some you need to go different routes. In that aspect it is like a metroid game.
