@caninedrill_instructor5861
@caninedrill_instructor5861 6 жыл бұрын
rubymimosa High blood pressure, yes. Seizure alert? That depends... On whether the dog has a natural alert to a seizure. The same applies to migraine alerts. Some dogs that have a natural seizure alert can have that alert shaped into a disability mitigating tadk. Since it is unknown, at this time, what the natural alerters are actually keying in on, the keying trigger cannot be duplicated and used to train dogs that don't have the natural alert. Seizure response, on the other hand, can pretty much be taught to any dog with the right temperament for Service work.

I have two large dogs. They are both rescues. Cammy is a black/chocolate Labrador 13 yrs. old and Lilah is a Newfoundland/ Shepard mix 11 yrs old. We got Cammy from a horrible place that claimed to be a rescue but was more of a greedy woman who mistreated puppies and was shut down. Lilah was rescued by a great place that took her and 12 other dogs from a kill shelter. Cammy is 57 lbs. and Lilah is 85 lbs. They are both so sweet. They both love cats which is good because we have 7. Lilah treats them as her children lol. They still love to play and I always make sure that they are healthy and happy since they are getting older. I love dogs and I will always have dogs in my life. They love you unconditionally and they understand what you are feeling and always give great kisses to help make your day better.

My dog is beating the odds agewise than. She's a Shepherd Husky mix and she will be going on 15 this Halloween and still has more energy than the Lab who's only going to be 8 this June. The vet is always impressed with my dog's amount of energy, which is usually put into fighting the vet exam the entire time. I understand why my dog is afraid of the vet now though. The last time we were there I was sitting on the floor with my dog and the vet came in with a needle in one hand and a muzzle in the other, because my dog's first response is to bite, and he looked a little too excited to be there. I got the shit scared out of me from that.

Thank you for NOT selling our dogs short! From the time I came home after being born I have had a dog in my life, 51 years. I started off in the 4H club "training", then discovered by accident how intelligent they truly are by "teaching" them (also trained a cat - they too are incredibly intelligent AND willing to learn if motivated correctly). Intelligence of a two year old human child indeed, some a little more than that and some a bit less. It's not just about the tricks and commands a dog learns rather how aware they are! That to me is the real test of intelligence and I have tested them thoroughly! It truly annoys me when people say "Your dog is so well mannered, sweet and smart." I want to reply with "Your's isn't?" Train your dog sure, come, sit, stay etc, but teach your dog EVERYDAY! Expose them to the world, people, other animals, emotions, everything you would a human child and see for yourself the rewarding possibilities for you and your dog!

jaspr1999 he or she is telling you lower. Lol. In all seriousness though. The chest or in between the shoulder blades?. They all like that if they know you. Scratch at the base of the dogs on tail. Dorsal part the ventral is there anus is sicko. I put money on it that the dog will lick the air trying to eat an ice cream that isn't there. It will also look back at you and seemingly thank you. If they willingly lay on their side for a belly rub they trust you with their life. Don't take that for granted.

jaspr1999 if you are scratching a dog and its leg starts to have a scratching motion stop scratching that area, as cute as it seems what you are actually doing is scratching sensitive nerves under the dogs skin which are linked to there spine and triggers a automatic reaction to move there leg, they can't control it and its actually very stressful to them it may seem like they enjoy it but they are anxious

I had a dog who was terrified of thunderstorms, we always knew when a storm was on it's way due to her behaviour, usually an hour before we could hear it. Another of our dogs could sense when my cat would have a seizure, he would get very clingy and then would gently try to hold the cat down while it had the seizure.

I called the weather man and offered to call him on the phone and tell him when my Sheltie said it was going to rain. He hung up on me. The dog was always right I used to laugh when it would rain and he had not mentioned it

My pit actually saved me from getting hit by lightening on my porch last year. It was storming about 30 miles away and I didn't know but he did. He shoved me in my door about 3 seconds before lightening hit the bird feeder I was messing with. The lightening blew the bird feeder apart and it caught on fire or what was left did. He's never shoved me like that before or since. I swear he knew what was happeneing.

Beautiful, caring, thoughtful and delicate they take care of me when I'm ill and let my hubby know I'm not good, I couldn't love another type of dog from the sighthound ( dog that hunts by sight rather than other mean, known for their extraordinary eyesight and speed, long muscular bodies, deep chests and huge hearts) now. #16 Cats do too. #11 Rocky could hear the approaching thunder and would let you know. #03 I have always said that pets have the mentality if a small child. Great list. Do one for cats too. Here's some fun cat facts: 1. A cat's eyes are attuned to movement. If it don't move, the cat may never see it. (mouse on wheel hub while cat runs around searching) 2. I read somewhere that cats see in the blue and green spectrum of light and that all other colors are black, white and various shades of grey.

I don't know how but dogs seem to always sense my visual impairment. Every dog we have had seems to act differently around me and they actually get more protective of me for example when mum and dad are on holiday, the dog we have now will follow me around and he will not leave my side. A few years ago we had a border collie Nelly. Me and my sister took her for a walk to the shops. On the way there I walked in front using my white cane. On the way back my sister said to me to fold my cane away and she would hold it. And to hold Nellies lead and see if she knew what to do. She walked at a slower pace with me than she did with everyone else who is fully sighted. She walked me around obstacles. She sat at the curb until I found it with my feet. And when a group of people were coming towards me from the other direction, she stood in front of me and wouldn't let me carry on walking until they had passed. As if she was stopping me from bumping into them. I was amazed at how she knew how to help me, because she was just a pet dog so she had had no training like a guide dog

Plus several others who found me & that I've found homes for. I also have cats & my dogs adore them as much as I do (& vice-versa).

Robo Tech Seizure alert? That depends... On whether the dog has a natural alert to a seizure, or not. The same applies to migraine alerts. Some dogs that have a natural seizure/migraine alert can have that alert shaped into a disability mitigating task. Since it is unknown, at this time, what the natural alerters are actually keying in on, the keying trigger cannot be duplicated and used to train dogs that don't have the natural alert already. Seizure response, on the other hand, can pretty much be taught to any dog with the right temperament for Service work.

Wayne Scace I know that, but there are dogs that alert for seizures, diabetes, etc. he wasn’t talking about only things that dogs are trained to do. There are many amazing things that dogs can do.

Robo Tech Please re-read my comment as I was reaching out to you to clarify your blanket statement. By the way, there's a reason I keep mentioning training. It's part of the legal definition of what a Service Animal is under the ADA. Basically, if the dog is not trained in work, a task, or tasks that directly mitigate their disabled owner's disability, it isn't a Service Dog. I wasn't saying that there aren't seizure/migraine alert Service Dogs. Mainly that they are very rare, and it's not something that all dogs can be trained to do. The trainer dog has to have a natural alert, whether seizure or migraine, to start with. Unlike Guiding which CAN be trained in any dog meeting the height/weight, intelligence, and temperament requirements. Or Diabetic alert, which can also pretty much be taught to any dog with the right temperament. You are quite correct about dogs doing amazing things. I've been lucky the last eighteen years to "see" it up close while working with my Guide Dogs.

Large dogs do not grow faster as puppies. It may seem like that because they have farther to go and they do grow a lot initially, but for example it takes a Great Dane three years to reach adulthood.

Some errors in the language comprehension skills of dogs. Some Border Collies have been found to have learned just over 1K words (they give names to toys as well as use various command words and phrases) and Shelties and GSDs have been found to have the capacity for 800 words. Shelties actually learn 'parts' of speech. They can learn verbs and nouns and directions so you can tell the dog to jump up or down, in or out, forward or backward or left or right. Dogs can also learn to count. My Sheltie actually came to understand the concept of decades because his favorite game once arthritis set in to his 'wrists' was to count catches. The first time I said 'twenty one" he gave me a dirty look as if I had cheated and started over. Dogs process the last word heard first. When I continued counting he got a 'eureka' look and the game continued. On the day he reached 'thirty one' he got the biggest darned grin - he had figured out that thirty was the decade higher than twenty. Same silly grin he got when he realized the ocean would return his ball. Shelties HATE to get wet, they avoid the water. His ball went in and he looked at it longingly and sighed at me and then, wow, the surf came back and brought his ball onto dry sand. He got goofy. I threw the ball as requested but he purposely bumped it into the surf with his nose and waited. The ball came back and he laughed. Dogs think, dogs learn (even when we aren't specifically training them) and they adapt. And they are proud of themselves when they figure stuff out.

I always have a dog. 30 years ago my parents brought home a sheltie when I was still in high school. We named him Shep. He lived for 17 years. When Shep passed, I adopted a sheltie mix named Chester. I had him for over 11 years. A few days after Chester passed, I adopted some kind of black lab mix. No one knows for sure what exact breeds Lennon is but I suspect border collie/lab. When people ask what breed he is I just say "my dog". To this day I still sometimes pine for Shep, and of course Chester. You can fill the void but you never forget your buddy.

My parents had a Shih Tzu named scooter. He could tell if my blood sugar was low. I was borderline hypoglycemic. I'd my blood sugar was too low, he'd walk step by step with me until I sat down and got something to eat. I also taught him to say sorry. He was the only dog I ever saw mourn. Wouldn't get out of bed for 3 days after an old cat my parents had died. He was 19 years old when he died. I miss him alot.

A couple of comments: Recently, I read an article which stated that dogs pretty much domesticated themselves. The animals learned that hanging around humans had advantages; a warm, dry place to sleep, easier access to food, protection from predators, etc. Also, the affection they received was beneficial. So, essentially, the domestication of dogs was a partnership. We had a border collie. She was wicked smart. She understood far more than 250 words and phrases, knew neighbors by name, etc. Like most of her breed, she was born knowing how to herd, although her attempts to herd the local birds and squirrels was uniformly unsuccessful. She had modest to good success when I took her to a ranch to practice with sheep. I enjoyed this list very much. I miss having a dog.
