9 things should be kept secret: age, wealth, family quarrels, religion, medical problems, love affairs, gifts, honor, and disgrace.
Do you think you are a real gentleman? Or probably you call yourself a lady of high manners?
Etiquette is all about how to behave beautifully. Unfortunately, many people consider respect for the rules of etiquette as something shameful, considering it a feature of classy aesthetes who are removed from real life.
In fact, the basic rules of etiquette are pretty simple. It’s a culture of speech, common courtesy, neat appearance, and control over your emotions. Here are 25 etiquette rules that every self-respecting person should know.
TIMESTAMPS
If you say, ’I invite you,’ that means you pay 0:54
Never pay a visit without calling first 1:11
Don’t put your phone on the table in public 1:43
Don’t invite a girl on a date if you’re going to be texting all the evening 2:17
A man never carries a woman’s handbag 2:36
If you’re walking along with someone and your companion greets a person 2:52
Men can eat sushi with their hands 3:12
Your shoes should always be clean 3:34
Avoid meaningless talk on the phone 3:50
If someone offends you, you shouldn’t return the favor 4:03
A man should always walk on a woman’s left-hand side 4:22
Puddle-splashing of passersby is an immoral behavior 4:38
9 things should be kept secret: age, wealth, family quarrels, religion, medical problems, love affairs, gifts, honor, and disgrace. 5:52
In the cinema, theatre, or concert hall, you should move to your seat facing those sitting 5:18
A man should never touch a woman without her permission 5:30
If someone calls to you rudely, you shouldn’t answer 5:50
The golden rule when using perfume is moderation 6:06
A well-bred man will always show proper respect to a woman 6:23
In a woman’s presence, men only smoke with her permission 6:33
When you enter a room you should be the first person to greet everyone there 6:49
Respect the privacy of correspondence 7:04
Don’t try to chase fashion 7:22
If you’re forgiven after you’ve apologized, don’t touch the offensive subject again 7:40
Avoid laughing too loudly, as well as staring at people 8:00
Don’t forget to thank your loved ones, relatives, and friends 8:15
SUMMARY
As Jack Nicholson, an American actor said:
‘I think much of decency. How to pass a plate. Not to shout from one room to another. Not to open a closed door without knocking. Let a lady pass. These endless simple rules aim to make life better. I pay close attention to my manners. Etiquette matters. It’s a simple and comprehensible language of mutual respect.’
Let’s respect each other!

I hate it when video doesn't have the content shown on the thumbnail. From the thumbnail it seemed that this video had some content about dining table manners regarding forks and knife, but there isn't. Not that it makes any huge difference but it does seem like deception and fraud to me!

phxbillcee I think that these are commonsensical “rules” and most thorough etiquette books would include a complete list of exceptions and how a gentleman as cordial as you seem to be could handle the manner such as “I would like to escort you from the right as I can remain attentive to our conversation as my ability to hear you is better from the right”. That was just my opinion and a guesstimate about how Miss Manners and the like would approach such a situation.

I like the one about not talking loudly in public. I was once eating out with someone and I was very embarrassed about how loudly they were talking. Everyone was staring at us and it was a fairly closed in area. I told them nicely that "I think we should keep our voices down abit." The person felt controlled and completely degraded me for "trying to control her." I see this a lot in restaurants and I find it so rude. Speaking very loudly in public means we don't care about anyone there but ourself.

Manners never date, it should be taught to our young as sign of respect what ever gender. Age before beauty is said, but it means to allow the older person to enter first, again no matter of gender. Used to be rode for a man to wear a hat indoors. Now clearley shows lack of respect to leav the hat/beany on indoors. Being a fashion statmant, thoes people are not thinking what is doing to young people which will continue to act the same and not for good.

Not just that but I everywhere Indian people were very well behaved compared to the other countries i have visited. There's something very sincere about the ways of the Indians.

I think many of these rules count for both genders. Even though I am a female, I'll still hold the door open if I walk through/get to it first. Somethings that are common sense to me, and that you missed. When you are walking or sitting, if you make eye contact, smile or nod your head. Do something to add knowledge the person, if you right away look away, look down or frown, it is rude and can hurt a persons feelings. Eat with you mouth closed, if you feel the need to talk, cover you mouth with your hand, or just swallow. Try not to make loud cutting, sipping or munching noises while eating. Do not interrupt a person, even if you say excuse me. No matter the person, teacher, parent, or stranger, wait until the person has a break in conversation or a break in focus, then say "excuse me, and or if the person was doing something important say, "excuse me, sorry could you___" Now internet etiquette/morals/common sense is a big issue. About 80 percent no matter the age, need education on how to use the internet, and social web site. From knowing when something is stolen, and not to encourage that, to unneeded said things. And I know what your thinking, "It's my opinion, so what?" Well then, if you think people really care, go make a channel, but if your out just to dis people, think about how your affecting them, their are a lot of emotional weak willed people every where, and you little "opinions" can cause them pain. Why do people not understand, that saying "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say nothing at all."

Exactly. Good sense and respect for others' right to their space, aurally and emotionally as well as physically, these last two especially important for well-meaning but unaware americans to remember while travelling outside their country, especially in EUopean countries., especially, re the aural sensitivity, on trains and other enclosed public places. The American twang carries far and drowns out often any other conversation, clearly not meant to impose by the person, but very irritating to all others who are used to being sensitive to the others in hearing space..

As a dude, I can honestly say I have a problem with the concept of chivalry. I am going to treat you respectfully and honorably because you are a fellow human being, not because you are a woman. I'm doing to hold the door for the next person, guy or girl. I'm going to compliment you because you earned one, not to flatter you or to hook up with you. Furthermore I hate when it's used as an excuse. For example, my mother used to literally shive my brother and I out of her way, while she proclaimed "ladies first." Being a young child, I asked why. She answered because. It's entitled people who exploit that social expectancy that anger me. It's absolute lunacy, that I should be expected to serve an entire half of the population because I'm a part of the other. Don't get me wrong, common decency is important, as well as one if my core values. I'm only trying to point out these double standards like "I can hit you but you can't hit me" are unfathomably ridiculous.

While it's true that we should all treat each other with respect until or unless it is not earned or unwarranted by whomever, you are also taking a very narrow-minded and cynical view of women and chivalry. I suspect that the demasculization of men has a great deal to do with this and how many (mainly younger) have responded to it. I find this to be a very sad statement as the world has changed too much for my liking in that men are not being treated by women as the strong, leading, virile types which are to be looked up to. This has been brought about by these modern women who think that they can 'do it all' who further believe that men are only there to be used to create children, if they need them at all. Sadly, my own 30 year old daughter is also caught in this mindset which she did not learn from me, but from her own peers. Why women have started treating men this way I suspect stems from a sick, twisted mindset that many of you would never believe, were I to explain it to you, but nevertheless, I firmly believe that much of the death of the traditional family and its values have been done by design. I truly hope that some of you men will find it in your hearts to love and care for women in the truest sense and that our society won't go down what I see as a crass and ignoble future coming about due to socialistic, leftist ideologies and sick, sycophantic behaviors taught in government funded schools. You can't help it, you learn it.

A nice bunch of advice. Some of it is a little old fashioned out of place in certain circles, but that is a cultural thing. The most annoying and offensive thing anyone can do to me is be a snoop. That on its own is a reason to end a friendship or relationship. Even if it is a family member. The next thing I can't stand is a gossip or someone you can't trust. 👍

It's considered rude and so offensive when someone is talking to you about no matter what subject or how much important it is, to change the topic so fast like if you don't care or don't even bother trying... at least faking it!! also it's so rude when you don't let the other person talk and express himself completely just becauae you're bigger maybe older , stronger or smarter.. it's just so offensive and in my country you're considered a non-civilised or not a well educated person . Some of your rules are a little bit outdated, especially the ones about treating women like fragile flowers or inept children and therefore treating them preferential to men. You shouldn't smoke in the presence of a woman without her permission - really? You shouldn't smoke in ANYONE'S presence without making sure first that it doesn't bother the other person, especially not indoors. A woman may decline your offer to pay her bill - and a man may not? Why? Of course it may come across as unfriendly to reject a gift, but it isn't per se rude and it does certainly not depend on the gender. It does not matter in the slightest on which side of a woman you walk. There is no reason to take a woman's coat, handbag, luggage whatsoever unless she has several pieces of luggage and your hands are empty or she is struggeling with heavy luggage - and if she for some reason wants to have her hands free and asks you to carry her handbag, of course you can do that, too.

About perfumes. Do not spray it in public! There are lots of people over sensitive to scents, including myself. If I smell even a little bit I start cough badly and my eyes start to tear. It’s horrible. So please. Spray them at home. I often have to deal with this at school and it makes me really mad. I can’t usually even use the toilets in there because I might choke there

Nice cover picture, but NOTHING talked in detail about the cover picture. Oh wait, yes, you talked about PHONE etiquette and manners. However, I have learned about napkin placement, and how to remove food from your mouth if you need. What about how to cut your food and place your knife? I thought this video would have explained those nuances.

Even if they take in a fraction of it, they will as both individuals and as a group benefit as a whole from an etiquette influenced micro-culture. If their parents won’t teach them either due to lack of knowing or personal opinions that “times have changed”, then possibly the school’s or their peers will correct them.

Rule 15 is garbage, a gentleman should always walk next to traffic with a lady. And which side that is depends upon what country you are in and what side of the road they drive on and of course which direction you are walking compared to traffic flow. If walking next to traffic means I don't walk on her left hand side then that's what I do.

Rule #15: Interesting, I remember hearing about that in a slightly different way. IIRC, the man used to walk on the right side of the woman to keep his right hand unoccupied not for saluting, but being able to quickly draw a sword if a situation of danger arises. A bit outdated, I guess. :)

Walking on Woman's left side is relative. If you are in US and Europe this rule is valid... In UK it should e the other war round, I think so. Purpose is that while walking on footpath, you should be on the side of the road adjacent to the footpath., to face all the mud slashes during rain :)

"Walking on Woman's left side is relative. If you are in US and Europe this rule is valid... In UK it should e the other war round, I think so" It has nothing to do with the country or what side they drive on, or even what side of the road you walk on. It would be relative to which direction you are walking on the sidewalk/footpath if the idea is to shield the lady from splashes (cars can also splash from the far side of the road). If you get to the end of the street and decide to go back, do you walk backwards, both turn around together so that the man is on the left, or do you switch hands and walk between the sidewalk/footpath and the road? If being between the road and the lady is the most important thing, then the side the man walks on is not relative to any country. Walking on the left side is meant to pertain to walking indoors or escorting a lady while indoors, especially during ceremonies, whether it be a wedding, prom, a dance, or many other indoor situations. While splashes may not be the big issue, especially on dry days, I find that ladies appreciate the thought that the man is making an effort to be respectful. The man should never need to explain it, and the lady may not even recognize it, but if she does recognize a pattern and knows this bit of good manners, she surely will be grateful. Nothing is lost on the effort by the man. It is not a ground-in rule. If the lady feels it is wrong, demeaning, or otherwise, that is perfectly fine. Mutual respect and understanding is important in any relationship. This (man walks on correct side) is purely good manners from our past, and of course, there can always be exceptions. For example, if you are joining a lady and her friends, and the friends are closer to the street than the one you are about to walk next to, you do not need to rearrange everyone so that you are the closest to the street. You simply join in as one of the group. Most likely the group will not consist of a line anyway, plus you and the lady may even walk ahead or behind the others. In that case, feel free to work your way to the side that you would normally walk. You can do this very easily if you are first having a quick face-to-face greeting-hug-possibly-minor-kiss (depending on the stage of the relationship), by taking hold of the hand you will hold or if you are already holding both hands, releasing the hand that will be on your far side of her. If you have already walked with her as a couple, holding the same hand you would have between you will not be awkward to her; she will indistinctly take up the same side. If you do not commonly walk together holding hands, you can let go once the walking has started again, or the direction has been established. Also important is that holding hands is a stage in a relationship that does start at second number one when you first meet. You both get to that stage when it is mutually agreed on, not by a verbal discussion, but by the overall relationship as it develops. You will both know when it feels fine and when it might not in other situations. Times have changed, and if the lady does not feel walking on a particular side is an important rule or good manners, or otherwise, that is perfectly fine. You do not HAVE TO do anything that feels uncomfortable to either of you. Things will work out just fine whether the relationship lasts or ends. All aspects of relationships are based on mutual respect.

Oh another thing I thought of regarding the side a man should walk on with a woman. My mother taught me a man should walk on the side of a woman dictated by which direction they are walking and on what side the street is. A man should walk on the side of the street so if a car swerves towards them he can push her out of the way, or if a car hits a puddle and creates a splash he will take the brunt of the splash and try to keep the lady from getting wet.

People in New England, more so than other places in America I have found, are notorious for staring. Here are some others 1.cover your mouth when coughing 2. Don't but into other people's conversations. This includes audibly snickering or sneering at other people's conversations. 3. Don't call people by their first name if you don't know them. 4 Don't...I stress DON'T call a woman Miss if she is married as it is seen as derogative and undermining. If unsure stick with Ms (pronounced mizz) if unsure.

Well regardless of choice words, if I invite a lady then I've always paid. I was told that a lady walks towards the most inward part of the sidewalk not street. Also that a lady would be to the left of a man, based on that majority of people were right handed, so if a marauder, thief, mugger, etc. would approach then the male would be at the ready to unsheath his sword to defend his lady. As for never carrying her purse. I've done it. I've held her items. My friends are like family and I discuss it all.

Actually guys the walking on left side, or street side. SEE BACK IN THE DAY, when people threw their chamber pots contents onto the side walk and street, the man usually stayed on the house side- NOT street side to 'take the hit' if it happened. To whereas it evolved to the street side as cars and plumbing came about. I have heard to her left, when indoors or escorting though.

Certainly a western perspective on etiquette. Noticed #19 needs a tweaking. Here in Vancouver B.C. Canada many Asian men carry their lady's handbags. Good thing to do as sometimes it is heavy. Our western man will often say can you put my this or my that in your hand bag. On other occasions they will giggle at the size of your handbag. Doesn't matter how much they put in your handbag the will never offer to carry it . It is somehow romantic to see the man carry the lady's bag.
