This video is proof that, contrary to popular wisdom, Dalton was great at the one-liners. People say he seemed 'uncomfortable' delivering them, but I think they're just used to Connery and Moore, whose Bonds joked for their own amusement. Dalton's Bond doesn't make jokes for his own amusement, or to appear suave and witty, but rather as a way of dealing with stress, bitterness and exasperation. Which is perfectly in keeping with his more realistic, human take on the role.

Timothy Dalton is also the only one who delivers the line, "Bond, James Bond" realistically and naturally; not like an actor trying to sound iconic (which is why it's the best). Sean Connery comes second in his delivery, and then Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, but Dalton is the actor least *pretending to be* James Bond, and just *is James Bond.*

@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
@@landrya9938 If I had to chose between TLD and LTK, I’d chose the former. It was the first Bond film I watched. Looking back at it now, it’s what the franchise needed after Roger Moore outstayed his welcome and shifted the tone from light-heartedness to a proper spy thriller. That’s not to say LTK is bad - it has two of the most underrated and stunning Bond girls and a very intimidating villain in Sanchez. The only downside is that it got released against big blockbusters like Batman and Indiana Jones. Still, I’m firmly in the "Dalton should of done two more" camp.

+bgxbsz I am curious, are you saying that Dalton's Bond become the new M? That is an interesting theory. I like that theory as it helps explain the differences in characterizations, but the only problem is the references they make in some of the films. Felix refers that Bond was married once (referring back to OHMSS) and we saw Roger Moore's bond visit the grave of his wife. That seems to go against the code name theory.

Dalton was offered the role on three previous occasions. He was first offered the role in 1969 for what would become On Her Majesty's Secret Service. His reasoning for turning it down was that he felt too young to be Bond at the ripe age of 24. The second time he was offered was after Sean Connery's second retirement and for the film that would become Live and Let Die. For the same reasons, he turned it down. He was again approached 10 years later to star as Bond in what would become Octopussy. This time, he had accepted the role but when it was announced that Sean Connery was going to star in Never Say Never Again, the producers backed out and recast Moore in order to better compete with Connery. His fourth offer almost never came. Pierce Brosnan was offered and accepted the role for what would have been The Living Daylights but when Remington Steele was renewed because NBC wanted to capitalize on Brosnan's new worldwide stardom, the producers backed out because they felt nobody would pay to see Bond in the theatres when they could watch him for free at home. Then they turned back to Dalton. And the rest is history.
@FullArcher054 жыл бұрын
Hutch214 Huh, my dad once told me people knew Pierce Brosnan was going be after Moore, but instead they got Dalton, hence why he was only in two films because he did horribly as Bond. Personally, I disagree, and the real supposed reason is that Dalton didn’t want to continue as Bond after some legal issues and plus, he was beginning to feel too old for the role, or so I heard.

Pierce Brosnan sucked!
@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
@@FullArcher05 Long story short. Dalton was all set to do a third Bond film in 1991, but an ongoing legal dispute behind the scenes at MGM caused it to be scrapped. It got resolved, but Dalton’s contract expired in 1993. He then went to the producers and said he just wanted to do one more and then call it quits. Cubby Broccoli said Dalton couldn’t just do one after a long period of inactivity and offered him a 3 to 4 movie deal. Dalton, even though he agreed with Cubby, politely declined and left the role in April 1994. Then Pierce Brosnan got the role 2 months later.

I wish there had been more of a plot based on the Fleming short story, since it captured the stress and boredom and terror of the Berlin Wall, but it was good enough as a jumping off point. The timing was fortuitous, as Russia was about to leave Afghanistan and with it the Cold War, but it still made sense when released. He also, like Craig, never saw women as objects, it was simply being caught up in a live and die world. A film I can watch many times.

@@moist.teabag I don't agree. Yes, he was classically trained, but he has a wide range which easily encompasses Bond.

The real James Bond, according to Ian Fleming's book.

The soundtrack to TLD was great. John Barry's last.

Tim was first approached to play Bond in '68 for On her majesty secret service, Tim was 23 and believes Bond should be 35-40 so he said "I'm too young" he was then approached for the Living daylights and initially had to turn it down because he was filming another movie but after Pierce Brosnan gell through filming was delayed until Tim was ready. Dalton said he'd do it if there wasn't a huge emphasis on the gadgets but more on Bond from the books which Licence to Kill highlighted immensely, this is particularly interesting because he didn't piss on the legacy of Moore and Connery he just said "that's not for me" meaning their versions of Bond. Initially Goldeneye was gonna be in '91 with Timothy on his 3rd outing but Kevin Mcclory legal battles and a silly script Tim resigned and Pierce took over. Dalton was touching on what Daniel Craig would become but imo is a far superior Bond. For me Bond has to be most of if not all 4 of these: Look good in a suit - Pass Kicks ass - Pass Criminal Charm - Pass Ruthless - Pass Maybe it's a perception thing but Tims weakest was the charm, he wasn't bad at it but it was his weakest trait

Relying too much on gadgets removes the thrill, as in a thriller spy! Dalton used his gadget several times in TLD and it was only silly at the end.

Dalton is very charming but the situations he was in storywise didn't call for charm. With Sanchez he had to act professional, etc. But with Kara, he was actually charming in a wholesome way.

Despite not having the class of Connery and Moore- the two best Bonds- he is quite underrated. Much better than the tool Lazenby or the overrated wonder Craig.

I like Timothy Dalton as James Bond

The most under-rated, interesting and 'realistic' James Bond. I think he captured the darker, hardness and intensity of Ian Fleming's, licensed to kill-secret agent 007, coupled with the British reserve and charm. Attractive and handsome yet not exactly classically good looking, movie idol looks. He kind of had the whole package really but more the actor's Bond!

Fact: Dalton auditioned for Bond in the 60's and 70's during the Connery and Moore Era and he took the part a decade later.

He didn’t auditioned, they approached him. The first he thought he was too young and the second he didn’t like the direction where the franchise was going

Sanchez, killed by a lighter given to him by felix lighter. Dalton was so underrated, he introduced me to bond as a boy growing up in the 80’s.
