I don’t really drive the car much in wet conditions and that seems to keep things mostly clean, then just the occasional blast of compressed air and wipe down of the top surfaces has been working without too much ongoing effort.

This is amazing! I’m purchasing a 1983 944 Porsche for my husband as his dream since his childhood was to own a Porsche, I don’t have the resources to buy him a new one but I’m looking at one tomorrow and I’d definitely like to look for the right things it’s been sitting for 20 years. !
@NC944er
@NC944er 9 ай бұрын
Wow, very cool! That would make for an incredible gift experience for him, something he’ll never forget. Childhood dreams die hard. 😂 You may not have time to watch it, but I have more of a buyers guide video on the channel as well that breaks down many issues to watch out for, but for a car that’s been sitting for 20 years, much of that can largely be predicted anyway. Many of the rubber bits will have aged out, so you’ll be looking to do all new drive belts and oil seals around the engine. Most of these parts are reasonably priced, it just takes time to do it all. If your husband is a decent DIY/mechanic, he’ll be fine as the 944 is pretty easy to work on. Whatever you end up paying for the car, factor in around $2,000-$5,000 for parts to get it going. I’d recommend replacing the timing belt, oil change, and refurbishing the fuel system before trying to start the car, all of which is covered on my channel. Best of luck to guys and I hope you can find the car of his dreams. Let me know if you have any questions as you get started. Cheers!

Very sincerely...I watch a LOT of car videos on KZfaq for years now, personally drive a 350z that I love, but some day I'd love to own a Porsche, 911 ideally, but may pick up a 944 Turbo in the near future for 8k if things go well....and tonight I just stumbled onto your channel and your content, style, demeanor, language, editing, is truly one of the best I've ever seen...you deliver the key points, their benefits, and the helpful ancillary info for each point just beautifully...and so a compliment is truly due to you as well as a real thank you for organizing your thoughts and delivering them in a production that is very considerate toward the viewer in tactically excluding all the extra nonsense or unrelated unimportant details or minutia or adolescent formulaic jokes....you're an authentic guy and it's much appreciated. Beautiful car by the way. I grew up in Germany since my dad was Air Force and we were stationed over there in the 80's....I should have done a tour of the factory in Stuttgart, even as a kid, but I remember I had all the original brochures, big squarish glossy brochures of the 924, 944, 928, 911....but have never driven one. Actually..quick question....if you don't mind my asking....anything I should look for in reviewing the 944 Turbo I'll be looking at? It's a 1988...belonged to my friend's dad who was restoring it, and the only thing left was he COULD NOT figure out why it would keep turning off from not getting gas apparently....the guy selling it is fixing that, and once he has his mechanic fix it to rock solid reliability he said I can have it for 8k, apparently much was done to the car already, but I'm pretty unaware of 944's personality quirks and mechanical quirks...a 350z I could tell you a lot....but while I'm here...anything from your experience that you'd say to a guy about to buy one (I'm guessing it will be ready by April....he's got a bunch of other cars too that he's working through).

Thank you for the detailed compliment! You may not be surprised to learn that most of the content design choices you mentioned were deliberate. 😂 I didn’t start the channel with an intent to monetize it or capitalize on likes/subscribes, the algorithm, etc. It was started with the sole intent of helping other 944 owners with their cars, and in doing so I considered eliminating those segments that I would commonly skip over in other automotive videos I had watched, like the lengthy intros, comedic elements, and unnecessary ramblings. What remained is what you see, concise and descriptive content that is educational and informative, while still partially entertaining due to the high quality imagery and editing. People seem to appreciate the style. A 944 is a great way to “cut your teeth” in the Porsche world. Inevitable repairs won’t break the bank like a 911, the community is incredibly welcoming and helpful, and there are an abundance of digital resources available for DIY maintenance. They are truly great cars from a quality of engineering perspective, and the fact that so many of them are still on the road is a testament to Porsche’s iterative design philosophy, always changing and improving year-over-year. Unfortunately, now that they are 35-40 years old, most of the soft rubber components will show significant signs of aging, to the point of failure in many cases. This is especially true of any car that has sat in storage for a period of years without a dedicated owner to circulate the fluids on a monthly basis. Colloquial advice from the 944 community often includes: “Buy the best possible example you can afford” and “They are cheap to own, but expensive to drive.” This originates from the extensive backlog of maintenance that most cars now suffer, and the more you use the car, the more parts like oil seals and other wearable components will begin to fail one after another. I say all this not to dissuade someone from 944 ownership, but simply to align ownership expectations, as it makes for a more enjoyable experience when you know what to expect and can budget accordingly. Gone are the days where you can buy a 944 and add 25k miles to the clock without some kind of maintenance. If you enjoy wrenching on cars, this will be an added benefit and at the end of the day, $8k for a 944 Turbo is wonderful starting point! A 1988 model year is a great one to have, as it will include most of the major improvements that Porsche implemented over the years. They also suffer from fewer electrical gremlins than the early cars. As you’ve seen with your friend’s example, the fuel delivery system takes a beating, with aging fuel pumps, clogged fuel injectors, and failing pressure regulators being quite common, so it’ll be nice to have that sorted. As for the driving experience, they are not quick cars be today’s standards and while the Turbo model provides more thrills in that area, they are still very much momentum cars. The true fun factor comes from throwing them repeatedly into the curves and working to optimize braking and acceleration to get the most from the car, the suspension balance is difficult to match. The 944 also wins in the vintage aspect, where the sights, sounds, and scents blend to create something special from a different era. They have the classic ‘80s box fender flares, the engines are much more angry and mechanical sounding than modern cars, and the interior smells of leather, oil, and hot metal. All this, combined with an analog driving experience, makes them really unique. Here are a couple of informative resources that will help you get started. The first is a 944 Buyer’s Guide with common things to look for, which would apply to all 944s including the Turbo (sometimes referred to as the 951). The second is an FAQ from Clark’s Garage, providing Turbo-specific technical specifications and general information. Best of luck and thanks again for commenting! Cheers! www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/944_buyers_guide/944_buyers_guide.htm clarks-garage.com/951faq.htm

@TakeFlightGarage
@TakeFlightGarage 11 ай бұрын
@@gbw4908 from what I’ve seen the OBD is an entire module that plugs into their DME board. So basically you can be running whatever chip stock or otherwise and still have the OBD capability. Limitations maybe physical ones for example the LR MAF chip might be too tall to physically plug in the OBD module. But running a stock chip or just a replacement chip should be fine.

Hey man love your videos, glad you kept the design 90s. I love the look of them. Just two bits of info that may be of use to you. I have a momo proto tipo on my car, the stock wheel has an offset, and if you're tall (im 6 foot 2) you may not be able to see the indicator light or tops of your dials without the offset ring for the momo wheel. I'm very happy with mine quality and feel wise. I have a danske exhaust on mine too. And can confirm they sound good but not obnoxious. No drone from it at motorway speed but a nice howl when driving "enthusiastically". Shocks and the maf kit are on my wish list after seeing your vids.

Very nice job, i'm tinkering with my '87 928. A few mods I added : Eye level brake light at the top of the hatch, 2 retractable cup holders, ran some USB cables under the A pillar trim for a dash cam and hands free kit at the top of the windscreen, took out the ash tray and installed a dual channel temperature sensor screen for the engine and transmission temperature, spliced into the cigarette lighter circuit and installed 2 power points either side of centre console in the foot well, made a mount for a phone holder installed using an existing bolt inside the centre air vent. The only holes I've made are in the replaceable side panels either side of the centre console.

Love what you've done to your 944. I bought a Guards Red 944 new in 1984 (my 1st brand new car, I was a young Captain in the 82nd ABN at Ft. Bragg), but only had it for a year. I put 30k miles on it in that year as I love to drive it. Now that I'm 65, all 4 kids are grown and left the nest, I'm reminiscing on getting another 944 an fixing it up. The only picture I've been able to find of my 944 is from our wedding. I remember giving my girlfriend a key to my 944 the day I bought it. She was surprised I gave her a key, and my response was you'll be driving it so you might as well have a key to it. She's now been my wife for almost 40 years and the only picture I can find of my 944 is from our wedding. I'm pretty confident I could handle most if not all the modifications you've done as I've been working on cars (my own or my Dad's) since I was 16. I've never done a transmission upgrade like you did, but I've replaced the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing, rebuilt a master cylinder, replaced rings, valves, head gaskets, tie rods, and the standard maintenance items like breaks, rotors, oil, filters etc. I'm not afraid of taking just about anything on and with KZfaq and folks sharing what they've done the trepidation at attempting something has gone to almost zero. I've now got 8 grandkids, and teaching them how to work on cars using a 944 as the training tool just seems like a pretty cool project. I learned on a 1972 Toyota Corolla, piece of crap car. Did a complete motor job on it and remember my Dad telling me I had to drive under 30 mph for the first 250 miles and keeping the rpm low, change the oil and filter, and then another 250 miles at under 50 mph again keeping the rpms low and change the oil again. He said that gave the engine's new rings a chance to refit to the cylinders. It seemed to take forever to get those 500 miles under the hood, and at 17 years old it just seemed like torture to drive it so slow. I did it, because I'd put the hours in fixing in it and didn't want to have to repeat the process. Thanks for sharing your work and reasons for the upgrades. I respect your choices on keeping the original look of the 944 and the tasteful change you made to the rock guards.

Hey, thanks for sharing your history with the 944 series! It’s always interesting to hear the individual stories people have related to these amazing little cars. Prices have fallen a bit from last year, so it may be a good time to start looking around if you wanted to get back in, lots of fun to be had, and you’ll definitely spend more time wrenching than driving these days, at least until the car is sorted. 😂 As we get on in years, it’s arguably less fun laying on a concrete floor for things like a clutch job, but as you point out, most of the work is pretty approachable, especially with all the online resources available today. Sounds like a great way to create some memories with the kids and grandkids, and “little helpers” can come in handy for sure!

Nice job with all your mods. I like the fact you've aimed for reliability and a mild uptick in performance. It's good you didn't forget about the short shift kit either. I owned a 1985 Alfa Romeo GTV-6 back in the early 90's which has a rear transaxle like the 944, but lusted after a 944 which had better balance and handling (despite the Alfa's near 50:50 weight distribution), better reliability and was just a better overall package. Apropos that, I drove a later 968 Club Sport back in the 90's which was the best handling car i've ever driven. I just had a look online & found a good 1993 968CS with 127,500km's, KW V3 suspension and Recaro seats for under $90k aussie. That would make an good track day car, as the 968CS was designed for production car racing.
@NC944er
@NC944er 9 ай бұрын
Oh man, Alfa makes some beautiful cars, but I do get the reliability aspect, it starts to become annoying if you can never actually drive a car you’re dumping money into. That 968CS sounds like a good find, they don’t come available for sale very often, even here in the US. I understand 944’s are fairly rare in Australia.

Yeah, I’ve seen some of the posts from guys using MegaSquirt, etc. It definitely involves more work and tuning sessions, but provides more flexibility to make changes. So it’s a trade off. The MAF is a pretty easy solution, but I’m running just a little richer than I’d prefer to avoid a rough idle at cold start, whereas with connected software I’d have a better idea of what’s happening with the fuel map.
