Kunming is famous for its wild mushrooms and is also famous for its mushroom hotpot restaurants. They don’t have English names or large advertising budgets to market themselves to foreign tourists, but if you would like to seek one out, it’s not difficult to do.
Wild Edible Mushroom Hotpot in Yunnan is very popular in all 16 cities and prefectures of Yunnan Province especially in the rainy seasons from May to September.

Yunnan province is the mushroom capital of the world. I believe 1/3 of all the known mushrooms species in the world exist in Yunnan and they find new fungus species in Yunnan every year. There is a psychedelic mushroom that is a delicacy in Yunnan, when the mushroom is cooked it loses its psychedelic properties. That's likely what that 25min timer was for, in case you had a toxic/psychedelic mushroom on your table. I believe the mushrooms they eat in Yunnan that are a delicacy are wild mushrooms so they're not grown in farms, they're picked straight from the mountain forests. Some edible mushroom species can closely resemble poisonous ones, so for safety you must boil your mushrooms for 20-25mins.

and TBH, if they know the prices for wild picked porcinis, chanterelles and morels, a lot of mushrooms aren't cheap food, some can be quite pricey. good dried shiitake sells for about 20UK a kilo at wholesale, black wood ear fungus just a tad less than that, yellow ear is probably double that, and good Yunnan morels is double of the yellow ears, etc... there's also cheaper farmed stuff for some of these, while experts have yet to find a way to farm other types...

Do you know about the legality of consuming those psychedelic mushrooms in that region? I am not interested in eating stuff like that, but i am curious if the cultural view on such substances is similar to the west where alcohol is fine for some reason, but other substances are not.
@Mike-bt3ki

@@Egal0190 You can find the psychedelic mushrooms in wet markets or some street vendors in Yunnan. I think raw consumption of the psychedelic mushroom is frowned upon in Chinese society but I don't think it's illegal. I'd say Chinese people don't have a culture of experimenting with hallucinogenic substances, of course there might be some Chinese that eat the mushroom for the hallucinogenic effects but the vast majority don't eat the mushroom to experience hallucinations.

There may be an error in the translation. It is not a hallucination that makes people feel happy. It is a neurotoxin and must be treated in the hospital.

That explains why Western media has been simultaneously scream 'China's economy is collapsing right now' and paradoxically shouting 'China is so powerful that it's gonna rule the world' at the same time... Pure jealousy and poor efforts to fool their audience. Yet in reality, China is simply focused on developing itself while providing improvements for its citizens, as opposed to wasting trillions of dollars in invading Middle Eastern countries or stirring up conflicts in rest of the world...... 😓

The thing about China is that even without international tourists, tourism just based on the support from their domestic tourists they will still survive. I've been to different parts of China in every season except winter. In whatever season, touristy places are teeming with mostly domestic tourists and some asian tourists from East Asia and SE Asia, hardly you see any westerner, except in cities like Shanghai and Beijing. Hence the motivation to provide English language menu is not strong. Pretty much like going to some non-English speaking European or Asian countries, esp when it isn't the capital, you aren't going to get any English translation. That guy is very patient entertaining all the back and forth translations and queries. I surely can't be in customer service, because after a while I will show my annoyance of taking such a long time to get the orders down. Also usually, local customers going in will know what they want to order as they understand the language and the pricing on the menu. Asking for recommendations is something I normally don't encourage as any shop will try to promote their pricier dishes. That's why I saved myself the trouble by going for simple-to-order meals at food court if I'm in a country that doesn't speak a language I understand. . 😂

4:13, it became a tradition to feed the seagulls every winter since 30 years ago, many tourists visiting yunnan in right months would also put this into their schedule. people can buy birdfood expecially made for the seagulls, quite cheap. the seagulls in yunnan are quite lovable and harmless, they just pick food from people's hands, or find some food in water, then rest for a while sitting on the water or standing somewhere they can. we all feel like they are our guests, and they would leave every march. then we can only meet them again next november.

100% agree. the subway is invaluable for commute but if you're exploring a city, local buses are the best way to go. many go on routes that you'd normally not walk through as a pedestrian tourist, so it opens up interesting potential of a city just from bus routes that people who live there use, and you can hop off anytime and know where exactly you'll be able to get back onto the same bus route.

The only difference is there are so many skyscrapers in HK. I experienced sleeping on an extreme high-rise building owned by a couple. It looked scary to look down the window. In Canada, seagulls are everywhere, even in the city along with pigeons, One can find geese as well and other species of migratory birds.

I grew up eating those in Puerto Rico, there it’s called carambola, and it’s one of my favorite fruits. On the mainland in the U.S., it can cost about $6 for just 1! If you ever visit Puerto Rico get the star fruit there. Some are more sour, others more sweet depending on the ripeness, but those don’t taste like a pepper. Maybe the area where they grew in China made it taste more like a pepper?

I love that car park, to store huge amount of cars instead of create drive way which saves a lot spaces and time, suits big mega city, how smart!!!!

I'm not used to online menus too but on second thought, it saves paper and trees, very environmentally friendly, don't you think?😆
