The hinges in this HP Envy 17-ae051sa (TPN-1129) laptop had completely broken out of the top case / palm rest. I used baking soda and Super Glue to bond the screw inserts into the case and to build up a resin base to improve the strength of the hinges going forward.

HP = Hinge Problem! I have the same issue and I am hoping that this video is going to get me on my way to fixing the issue. I've never heard of Super Glue and baking soda working like this! Every day is a learning day. Thank you.

I see there is a class action against HP for this very problem they deny exists. Yeah. While I wait for my $2 rebate I gotta fix it myself. I see that seating the nut to align will be the problem. I think it will work to leave the screw on the nut through the closed hinge with just a bit of glue to seat it properly. That done, I can remove the screw, open the hinge, and proceed to build up a glue base around it. That should work so long as I don't get glue on the screw! I always try to fix things myself. It's always the first time and usually the last time I have to do it, so each event is a new adventure. I didn't even know how to take off the back until your video and sure had never heard of a baking soda mortar, so gratitude!

I've considered but never done what you describe here, as you're correct that the biggest problem I've run into with this type of repair is misalignment of the metal screw inserts.

Thank you so much, sir. I think this method is better than using super glue with cotton because I can control the amount of material to build resin more effectively.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of using cotton before, but I do find that baking soda and Super Glue is pretty easy to work with and very strong when cured.

I encountered the same problem with my HP Envy M7 17 inch laptop. I watched many videos like these and try to disassemble my laptop by myself. However the different size screws were pain in the ass and I just gave up since I got scared that I might fuck up and do more harm tham good. 😅😅 Eventually I had to send it to a technician to get repaired. Good video nevertheless. 👍

Wow, amazing repair. The raised parts of the screw inserts on one side of my HP Envy have each broken into several pieces, so I'm not sure I could reconstruct them. Would the superglue+baking soda resin be enough to hold the metal lugs in place if I built it up enough? As opposed to here, where the resin supports the original plastic casings? Great music on the video too!

Yes, I've done several such repairs using baking soda and Super Glue to reattach the brass threaded inserts. The hardest part is getting them back exactly where they need to be so that the threads will line up.

@@ComputerHelpNI thank you. I'm going to try blu-tak in the gap under the brass inserts to hold them in place. I decided on araldite instead of the superglue as I didn't trust myself not to make loads of mess. Thanks for the advice.

Thank you so much! This particular repair is fairly tricky and time-consuming, but even a year later I've seen that these repairs are still holding strong. (I think loosening the hinge clutch makes a big difference by reducing the stress on the plastic.)

how many millions of laptops have hp built and they cannot design a simple hinge that will last more than 18 months? hp has stolen the last dollar from me as I just threw my third hp laptop with dead hinge and broken case in the trash f***k hp

Yes, I often think along similar lines. It's not just HP though -- I've seen some pretty terrible hinges in the less expensive Toshiba and Lenovo laptops as well.

This is the same problem I had. I just contacted them about this. They told me it was out of warranty. I have older computers and the hings lasted for years. This is a design problem using plastic. I just spoke to someone at HP they claim I would receive a coupon for repair. After seeing this video we can clearly see this is a recall. Sorry you got rid of yours. We need to let them know about it. If not I'm contacting the Better Business Bureau.

Hello Computer Help NI. Thank you for doing this repair video. Would you please explain "how" you use the baking soda with the super glue? I guess super glue alone is not sufficient? Also, if in my case, the bosses are in too many small pieces in order to be successfully glued back together to withstand the torquing when open and closing the clam shell, would the "top-case" need to then be replaced? Thank you very much for your additional details. :-)

(I replied to this comment via email, but I thought I'd share the response here as well.) I apply a small amount of Super Glue and then sprinkle baking soda onto the wet glue. The baking soda dissolved in the glue and forms a very hard resin. This process is shown more clearly in a couple of my other videos. See this one from around 26 minutes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i62oZt18z9qUdWw.html I hope that helps!

I did mention in the description that "I used baking soda and Super Glue to bond the screw inserts to the case and build up a resin base," but next time I'll mention it directly in the video.

The issue is the hinge itself is over tightened. No spring, just bushings to provide friction. Mounting it to the small amount of plastic with no reinforcement defies common sense. You can loosen the nut on each hinge to reduce the friction and allow smoother opening and closing. Not isolated to HP. I have had Dell do the same. Just dumb engineering.

True. I should probably have mentioned that in the video. 😳

Thank you very much for the very nice video. This PC has a very fragile display hinge. By the way, is it possible to replace only the keyboard on this PC? I am stuck with a defective keyboard.
@ComputerHelpNI
@ComputerHelpNI Жыл бұрын
I’m glad it helped. To replace just the keyboard is difficult, as it’s bonded to the top case by plastic “rivets.” It’s much easier to find a replacement “top case with keyboard” and just replace the whole thing, as you would need to completely disassemble the laptop regardless of which route (KB only or KB with top case) you decide to go for.

Hey what if the big screw is popping out? Like one of the two big metal screws; is it still repairable?
@ComputerHelpNI
@ComputerHelpNI 10 ай бұрын
If the screw is popping out, you likely need to repair the plastic that is supposed to be holding it together. You'd need to take the laptop apart to see what's going on inside. (I wouldn't be surprised if you find something similar to what's shown in this video.)

Baking soda (a.k.a. bicarbonate of soda). When mixed with Super Glue, it forms a VERY hard and resin that bonds to plastic.

What was that white powder
@ComputerHelpNI
@ComputerHelpNI Жыл бұрын
It's bicarbonate of soda, a.k.a. baking soda. It reacts with Super Glue (the liquid version, not the gel) to form an incredibly hard resin and bonds tightly to the existing plastic. I've repaired several laptops this way, and I've seen a couple of them more than a year later with the repair still intact.
