I understand how Miky feels when he returns to school. Chinese people have great respect for teachers. There is a saying in China that goes: if someone become your teacher even for one day, and you must treat him/her as your parents. So Chinese people have a sense of awe towards teachers.

@@JackAynsleyTravel What he said is a very old-school Confucian manner/rule. Most Chinese students still respect teachers, but we won't completely follow the Confucian rules now. Many people misunderstood Confucian philosophy thinking Confucianism was only asking people to respect their teacher as their father. Deeply he meant mutual respect, for a student to respect his teacher as a father, the teacher needs to be as responsible as the student's father ( in a different way). If the teacher is unethical or unfit for his role, he should not be respected as a teacher or a father figure. * that is my understanding from the most important Confucian philosophy book in China: 论语.*

Highly recommend a restaurant called Siji Min Fu, way more affordable, great Beijing roast duck better than some more famous chain restaurants and other Beijing/chinese cuisines. I have it whenever I travel back to Beijing.

Don’t you just love it that there is a Karaoke bar next to a liquor store and you can drink publicly on your way to a fancy dinner? No cops coming to mess with for having a good time. It’s also very safe. That’s the vibe in Beijing.

24:24 That is *not* a machete. It's a Chinese cleaver which can take the place of every knife in a Western arsenal. Significant difference between the two. You don't use machetes at the dining table, they are for the jungle. Just as a wok can replace all the cookware in a European/Western kitchen.

When I was in middle school, I often played chess with my classmates. But I rarely played chess in college, because my college roommate was the Xinjiang Provincial Champion of Chinese chess. He was so good at chess that it was no fun to play chess with him.@@JackAynsleyTravel

Regarding the price, well, it was not for daily meals, but an experience. The same experience as you guys' travelling around the world. Flights and hotels etc are definitely more expensive than the meals.

Your Chinese friend doesn’t know how to eat Pekin Duck. He didn’t spread the sauce on the pancake. He rolled it wrong. It’s supposed to be rolled up like a burrito. He didn’t teach you to eat the skin by itself dipped in sugar. At last, it’s never meant to be eaten in one bite. Remember the two hutong friends telling you to drink slowly. You don’t want to be seen as desperate. I doubt your friend is even from Beijing.

I love Peking duck! I only been to Beijing when I was a kid, I should visit soon. Actually in shenzhen or Shanghai also have decent Peking duck restaurants, I tried couple of times when I go there. Thanks for sharing vblog.

Great videos! I especially like your humor, but unless you’re trying to be funny, you probably don’t want to greet people in China with “Chi Guo Le Ma” which literally means “have you eaten yet.” Some people used to say that as a greeting in Beijing among acquaintances, but never between strangers, also I doubt this slang was ever used outside of Beijing.

25:05 That 'juice' is *duck fat*. Ducks are one of the fattiest poultry you can eat, next to roast goose (which you should also eat in China). Many say it's better than duck and you won't get it at that level anywhere else.
