In this video, we will cover a rather simple yet important electronic component - the potentiometer! We will talk about the difference between 250k and 500k pots and the value's effect on your tone, how to match the right value for a certain pickup and why you may want to replace your current potentiometer.

What value would you recommend for concentric pots in a PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) system in a bass? I thought about using B250k but people have advised me against it because it wouldnt work well for the bass cut for context: it has 3 pickups, 1 mudbucker and two humbuckers. The idea is to have an individual PTB system for each pickup, concentric pots would save a lot of space

Hi, if you can find concentric pots that are 1M/500K (1M for the bass cut), I'd recommend starting with that. That's always a trial-and-error case. Just try different values. You might find some very interesting tones.

Thank you for your videos, Can a failed volume pot make single coils sound weak? I just changed the pickup selector (thanks to your video) but that wasn't the reason so I'm thinking next to change the volume pot, (I've used WD40 in the past not realizing how bad it is, maybe causing the pot to fail or maybe just use), anyways finding the problem has been a mystery for this HSS Fender Select Strat... The problem with the pickup level started after I took it to an unknown store in Cornwall ON because I had a lose connection for the humbucker ( I now know it was a simple lose quick connection Fender uses) but very strangely it came back with weak signals from the two single coils, and the humbucker sounded normal level but muddy, maybe you have come across this before Because I live in Ottawa and don't drive, I can't get back to that store, they suggested maybe I had broken windings in both my single coils which is ridiculous, besides that would be their fault. I wonder if they took my pickups and replaced them with something else, they knew I was from out of town and I didn't even know how to remove my pickguard, (very very frustrating) Thank you in advance for any help that you can suggest

Hi, sorry for the delayed response. It is very possible that a faulty pot will kill your sound. Regarding the singles - does rolling off the tone pot leave a signal or does it act like a volume pot?

I bought two A500k pots and one of them read to 460k and the other one is 520k. Its okay to use the 460k? Which one is good for volume and tone? Pls I need answer.

Hi, it's ok to use both. Pots aren't always super accurate. I'd use the 520k as a volume to brighten up the sound a bit

What value pots would you use on a Strat with a Humbucker in the bridge position, and 2 single coils (neck mid)?
@coilsboutiquepickups
@coilsboutiquepickups 11 ай бұрын
It's always an issue deciding in these situations... there're some options - 1. To use the original 250k and deal with the darkness of the humbucker. 2. Switch the 500k and just deal with the brightness of the singles. 3. Install two different pots for each type of pickup. 4. Install a very bright humbucker through the 250k. 5. Install very dark singles through 500k. 6. Install a 500k but add resistors to the singles to bleed them a little.. In my workshop, most cases end up with customers choosing an open cover bright humbucker and leaving the 250k, and they are very happy.

Thank you. Jazz basses usually work with 250k for their single pickups, and I really like the sound. Played a few very old jazz basses with 500k and 1M and didn't like it. It was too harsh for me. Which pickups do you have on your J?

Thanks for sharing. I have a 1981 VOX Standard bass that needs new pots. It has a DiMarzio P-bass humbucking pickup. I wanted to use DiMarzio pots, and found some find 500K 'custom taper' versions online. Not sure what the custom means. Is it a hybrid of linear/log? Thanks.
@coilsboutiquepickups
@coilsboutiquepickups 10 ай бұрын
According to DiMarzio: "Standard guitar pots limit your musical expression, only starting to deliver sound at about “3” on the dial and then never getting much louder above “7”. DiMarzio’s custom taper pot is made to solve that problem by precisely delivering the same ratio of signal-to-turn as an actual 10-position actuator." Never tried them.. this actually might be really cool, but I do believe they're a little extreme with their interpretation of other tapers.. Most players (who don't use these) don't complain so much about that issue.
