Ivan Origone and Valentina Greggio of Italy beat the World Record with speeds of 254.958kph (158.424 mph) and 247.038kph (153,502mph).
Two world records were broken today in VARS la Forêt Blanche (France) at the Speedmasters in Speed Ski, a non-FIS event.
Ivan Origone (ITA) broke his brother’s record by 2,5km/h and set a new benchmark at 254,958km/h. His brother, Simone Origone, had held 3 world records since 2006.
The new women’s record holder is also from Italy. Valentina Greggio, who with two World Cup events to go is already the overall FIS Speed Ski World Cup winner, set a new speed record with 247,038km/h and beat the 10 year old record set by Sanna Tidstrand from Sweden.
Thanks MasMovil, Atomic Skiing, GoPro, Leki and Bumpy Films.

lots of people don’t understand how hard this is. yes all they’re doing is going straight down. but at that speed any micro mistake will slow you down cause a crash. keeping your skis together and straight at that speed takes tremendous strength, any imperfections in the snow can cause you to lose your balance, you you need to be constantly adjusting things by millimeters. i’ve hit 70mph (120.7 kph) on a few occasions and it was absolutely crazy and i couldn’t push it more, can’t even imagine going this fast. not as easy as you think

You'll tumble and fall after reaching 120 max.. the g force will.be higher the wind will hit you and you will have to use every muscle to maintain you balance.. and stance 1 cm to left or right and you'll fall.. the momentum gets too much your body tries to be be more vertical to conquer and your speed reduces ... you go too close to the ground its hard to maintain it. Its really tough and deserves an applaud.

I think another factor a lot of poeple in the comments are missing that makes this so difficult is the technique in simply tucking well and becoming aerodynamic enough to go that speed. I was trained to ski as an alpine racer and tucking well is absolutely not easy. It takes a lot of strength first of all to get forward enough and down enough to make much of an effect. Also, though, to be able to properly tuck everything in and ensure air can’t sneak through and cause alot of extra drag is incredibly difficult

Most cars can't even hit 255km/h. And also with skis you have a lot more traction per kg than with a car. I've hit 130km/h and have been able to decelerate in about 2-3s on about 100m. Most cars would take 200-300m to stop from that speed with good conditions.

for automotive speed runs, they have to make a second run the opposite way, and take the average. What would the average top speed be for the skier?

Going the opposite way would be walking uphill and therefore take about an hour. Average speed would be quite low I'd imagine.

The easiest way to explain it is although his total speed is ~158MPH his downward speed could never be more than 122mph. Most likely he is falling downward at about 100mph and moving forward at ~60mph, which is how he can move faster than terminal velocity. Hope this helps

120mph is approximate terminal velocity for a skydiver going belly down. When skydivers go feet or head first, terminal velocity is about 170mph. So technically not faster than skydivers can go.
