Allison was a talented coach at Manchester City who knew the game, but he was never the same after appearing on the 1970 World Cup panel and becoming a regular pundit on TV. The 'Big Mal' persona was born and it took him over.

Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed watching on this miserably wet New Year's Day. That's 53 years and almost 4 months ago now. Excluding the hairstyles, narrow lapels, very-short shorts, sponsor-free shirts and old money, it would still pass as a good programme in 2024.

Allison and Mullery sound and act like typical 70s men - the time of Jack Regan and the Sweeney, where you had a fight then shook hands and laughed at the black eyes you gave each other. Alas, such a time is gone now.

That Perryman must have accrued a long service record with Spurs. This is from 1970. I remember watching this fare on Friday nights in either '72 or '74 and I remember Perryman for Spurs. Then 10 years later I see this English soccer fare again and its ' Oh, okay, Perryman still going with Spurs. '.

Great to see Blackpool earn a creditable draw at Old Trafford in what was a relegation year for The Seasiders. Some talent in that team too with the likes of Burns, Green, Hutchinson and Suddick.

A few things. When was the last time you saw neither goalkeeper wearing gloves? Interesting fact: East Anglia didn't get color television until 1995. 😉 Also in that match, the referee looked like he walked straight out of a Charles Dickens book. This is all great stuff though. I'm loving it!

Malcolm was a brilliant coach, he was years ahead of his time in coaching, training and things like diets, but he was NEVER a manager, he was too adventurous. His partnership with Joe Mercer was magical, and it worked perfectly because of the completely different styles and personas. Joe was the farther figure that kept Malcolm in toe, but on his own? No too adventurous. In the spring of 1972, City were 6 points clear at the top of the league, when it was only 2 points for a win. He went out and bought Rodney marsh, when the team didn't need him, the style and tactics changed to accommodate him, and consequently only 4 wins from the last 9 games resulted in a 4th place finish but only 1 point off Derby who won the league. Even Rodney himself admits his signature cost City the league in 1971-72.

It amazing how many good sides there where in the early 70s. Everton, Arsenal, Leeds, Chelsea, Mancity etc.The all tailed off badly by the mid seventies and Liverpool filled the void to dominate

Fun and bags of Characters. ..but the overall technique is appalling..Bad First touches,misplaced passes,hardly any tactics,long ball football.Slow, with some overweight players and they all seem to look older than their years.
