I started riding horses when I was 3 years old. When I was 13 my Dad raised his hand at an Auction and maybe he didn't think he'd win, and we ended up with an Arabian-Morgan cross bread. He was high strung and didn't walk but pranced all the time. He was tough mouthed was the only bad part. Once he was running, he was almost impossible to slow down or stop even. I still loved riding him though. We had to sell him when I was 15 because we were moving to Montana. That day hurt so bad. Then when I was 17, I got a Ranch job feeding close to 500 head of Yearling Calves and instead of using a Tractor to pull the slay I was given 3 work horses that had hoofs the size of frisbees. (And they could work) I miss all my horses. Even the Horses I didn't own.

Was very fortunate to always have my own growing up. I broke, trained, and sold them. I come from a long line of farmers and ranchers so I learned a lot from family about how to train, break bad habits, ect... At least you had an opportunity that most never do. If things keep going the way they are, our skills may be in demand. Serious about that last sentence. Take care.

When I was 5 years old, back in 1956, my grandparents took my brother, sister, and me to a horse auction and let us pick out a pony. He was 5 years old, too, and he lived to be 26. He was a dark chocolate and white pinto built about like a Welsh pony section c. He was trained to harness and, for $50, came with a little red saddle, a halter, and a bridle. After the first couple rides, we decided the saddle and bridle were just too much needless trouble. We usually rode him bareback with just a halter and halter rope. We had a great time with Chief. He put up with a lot, even letting us try Roy Rogers mounts and all kinds of tomfoolery. He cheated at hide-and-seek, though. He was one of the smartest people I've known, and one of the sweetest. All this time later, I still really miss him.

Yeah I learned on a welsh pony that was a cutting pony out the Dakotas. I out grew him, but he stayed with the family until he pasted. If he hadn't liked me, I would never had made 5-6 years old. He was a character, he would beat up any stud on the place, I once watched him in a kicking match with an appaloosa stud. He won.

I grew up on a ranch in North Dakota. I rode half broke horses over 10,000 achers my whole child hood. I have traveled all over the word in the last 50 years, riding horses every chance I got. My favorite horses were the Andalusians (now called Spanish sport horses). I spent 4 years in Spain and spent all my off time at ranches where they mostly raised fighting bulls. I rode Lipizzaner's in Slovenia. Irish sport horses in Ireland, Arabians in Egypt, Worm bloods in Germany, Thoroughbreds in England, I played polo in Texas, rode bucking horses in rodeos, team roped, did dressage, arena jumping, cross country jumping, eventing, went elk humting on horse back in Montana, and trained many kids to ride. I have had a very good life and am looking forward to team roping with my Dad in heaven. May God bless and keep you. (Oh by the way. That picture of the horse raring. The orange and white one with black tiger stripes! Thats one of the best Photo Shop jobs I've ever seen.)

As a child my father took me horse back riding I also was around horses on my uncles farm and my grandfather had a horse named prince which he would hook up to a slide and he would lead him with me riding on the slide to the store and whatnot. My mother took me to Kansas City when I was 5 years old and it became like a dream. Years later in the Air Force I went horseback riding when in Washington state. My wife and I went to Aruba and I wanted her to ride but she was kinda reluctant and exclaimed Floyd you can’t ride a horse and for a second I think I might have believed her but I found myself actually leaping on a horse completely purposefully missing the stirrup to prove her wrong. I want to ride now after seeing this video. In the right place I would be so in love with riding! Thanks for the feeling I have in my spirit right now! Keep riding!

Hackneys were excellent jumpers but that is never mentioned. Przewalskis are 66 chromosome. Domestics are 64. According to the Caspian horse people, Cyrus the great was killed because he refused to use Chariot horses and stayed with ponies that the Scythians ran down on their horses. Alexander's horse was descended from the stolen mares taken from Xerxes.

I've ridden may breeds of horses or ponies over my lifetime but the Cydesdale has a special place in my heart because a lovely mare called 'Lacey' is the last horse I rode regularly. Despite her size she responded to my training and became quite expert at lower-level Dressage and her endless good nature and willingness to work hard always impressed me. While I learned Dressage in France on part-Arabians, Anglo-Arabs and Selles Francaise Horses, I was impressed at how willing and hard-working a Clydesdale mare could be!

Well, in all honesty, these breeds that are going extinct are man made breeds. As the horse has become more of a specialized hobby, many of the breeds that were around a hundred years ago are no longer being bred in big numbers as other breeds have taken over in popularity. For instance, the Shire; this is a large breed requiring a lot of food and room, this breed is very tall and not everyone is keen on finding a step ladder to get up on it. The Shires original use as a plow/draft horse on farms is no longer, and the horse, while very nice, is limited as a saddle mount. It's not good, but it's not inherently bad either, just like not all dog breeds are popular and some have gone extinct due to lack of people wanting them.

Many horses in the United States end up in Mexico and Canada where they are slaughtered. Also, Premarin, an estrogen medication for hormone replacement and menopausal symptoms, is made from pregnant mares urine. The name Premarin is derived from those three words. Mares are tied so they can only stand and their urine is collected. They are deprived of adequate water and are constantly thirsty, as the more concentrated urine contains higher estrogen levels. The foals resulting from the constant pregnancies are hauled off to slaughter houses where they become, usually, pet food. Sorry, but more people need to know this.-+

In 1951 when I was four years old I begin riding in a fenced block on a main street in Seattle, Rainier Ave. My beginning jumping lessons were at a Seattle barn. I've mostly ridden in Bridle Trails State Park. It was seemingly endless in those days as no roads or buildings surrounded it. Joni Johnson of Pearceville, AZ breeds both Peruvian Passos and Passo Finos. Their gait is very comfortable if difficult for me to get used to aa they move differently than any horse I had ridden. Her Passo stud was brave, surefooted and very tractable. I had to put the Pass Fino into her fastest gait and was completely flummoxed by the unusual feeling.

My pony was Exmoor highland cross. He was 13'2' in height and very strong. He had zebra markings on his shoulders and legs. He was golden in colour with a broad eel strip down the centre of his back from withers to tail. My vet told me he was a throwback to ancient breeds and probably came from one of the Scottish Islands. He was probably a stallion for part of his life as had the stallions crest and thick neck. He was intelligent and a fisty ride. But very gentle to care for. Everyone loved him. He was quite a character and actually saved my life at least once. I could have been crushed as the horses galloped down the field toward me. Daniel noticed my fear and he swung around and put his ears back standing right in front of me to force the horses to gallop around us, not through us. He was kept at Keilder whilst the dam was being built and as a result, was used to anything huge. huge earthmovers vehicles and fire engines with bells rings etc., etc., nothing on the roads bothered him.

I trained my horses so well they spook proof. Lot of sacking out, standing 20 feet from trains, semi's, tractors. It makes for a reliable horse, one I trained to shoot off of. Started with a single shoot 20 gauge shooting it at the ground so he got used to noise and after I felt he comfortable enough, lay it across his back and shoot. Eventually I could shoot off his back. Steadiest horse I ever owned, saved my life twice. He was never sold and spent his life with the family. That was a truly great horse, excellent breeding, he was proud cut so he still had a lot of spirit and he was highly intelligent. You are lucky to live your whole life and come across just one like. Looking for my next one.

Just an FYI, sometimes numbers shrinking like with the Peruvian Paso is actually a good thing because it shows the breeders are taking better measures on both the stallions and mares for selection to improve the breed. So the numbers won’t always shrink, that’s a very popular horse and there’s a lot happening to improve them currently

I have 3 horses, a Irish sport, named Ibex, a shire (there quite a bit more common where I live) called Clyde, and a Appaloosa colt who hasn’t got a name so far. Ibex competes in show jumping competitions and Clyde does carting. We’ve had the colt for a couple months now, and waiting for him to settle in more before breaking him. He’s taken to Ibex like a mum though, so we got somewhere. We have a rescue filly ,who sadly got abused be her old owners, on the way for fostering, she will have to be hand reared as no one could find her mother. Shes gorgeous though, we haven’t been told her breed yet, but she stands like an Arabian and looks abit like a Morgan, and has a black/darky grey sort of coat. Assuming she is going to be dapple grey though.

We had a small horse farm 30 years ago and had tri colored appaloosas and those who were very much like the tiger horses here. They had striped hooves and a scalara which is called the human eye and the modeling. My daughter trained barrel racing horses and it was wonderful to ride them with my hands stretched out int he air and by my legs give them signals to walk trot canter and whoa. She then would get ont hem and run them top speed in racing. We had quarter horses, appaloosas and a saddle bred, it was wonderful. My daughter still trains them and sold one for six figures.

I used to ride horses. I took classes on riding them. I never owned any horses, though. After I fell off a horse, I stopped going horseback riding. The reason why: I fractured my arm, got a nasty, bloody scrape, my whole body hurt very bad, and I hit my head very hard on the hard sand. Even though I dont ride horses anymore, I still love them!

I started riding at 7, my grandpa got me a older Appaloosa mare named Rico Britches aka Tico. I had her till I was 15 then they sold my horse and I only rode a handful of times again. I showed during those years in western classes mostly for 4-H club. I also bred and training miniatures with my aunt for a few years. In 07 I was the manager of a horse farm for retired show animals. I didn't ride just cared for them.

My grandfather had a lot of horses. When we moved down here close to him he sent us two horses one named Ashes and one named moonshine. We enjoyed riding them but would have preferred to have had a saddle. They're back bones are painful for your lower end especially if you're a female. The one I like the most that was shown on this episode was the Zorse. Those beautiful zebra stripes just got to me I guess ' but I think they're awesome I would love to see one in real life. The Clydesdale and the horses with feathers on their feet are so beautiful what I wouldn't do to have horse's in my life. One more time ( but I live ) dead center in town, with a small yard and am disabled and I Know I couldn't take care 😘 of them properly. Thank YOU SO Much to the WHOLE TEAM of WORLD HORSE WELFARE, and ALL the people, such as (but not limited to the others who helped and ALL of the professionals that give freely of personal plus those who have re-homed an animal from these types of places. You are ALL HEROES IN MY BOOK 📖. May GOD bless you and your loved ones these beautiful, bright animals

I've ridden all my life. I can't go a day without thinking about my beloved first horse, Blue. I was 10 the year Blue got hurt. He some how managed to get his left front leg stuck in our cable fence and he was badly injured, he was hurt for no longer than 7 weeks when we took him to a big equine vet a state away and got the news that he was going to have to be put down. That was the worst news ever as he had been my horse since I was 1 or 2 years old. Latter that year I decided that I needed another because riding makes me who I am. I stared riding one of my grandpa's horses Green. Green can be trouble some a he sometimes acts like colt even though he will be turning 13 this year. On this day I currently own Green and he is the light of my life.

There is a correction that needs to be made regarding your comment on the Peruvian Paso. It DOES NOT HAVE A BOUNCING GAIT. It has lateral movement, meaning . . . It moves like this. Right fore, right rear, left fore and lastly left rear. You will feel a slight jiggle jiggle in your butt going left to right but the gait will be smooth and not bouncy. Bouncy refers to the regular horses that move diagonally. The Paso is awaited breed. These breeds move laterally

We owned horses and worked with them. My mom and dad came from two different perspectives mechanistic or relational. Seeing horses as teammates personalities and co-workers is the perspective that I most valued. Just as people can be treated as disposable replaceable resources so can horses and vice versa. But when a work relationship gives you meaning it enriches your entire life same with the horse in that type of situation. It's hard to explain the sense of camaraderie and friendship but it's also a lifestyle that shapes your life and choices in owning a horse. As local farm economies have disappeared it seems like many horses have disappeared before them. I fear what's really disappearing is the relationship and connection to the Earth that each breed is a Testament to. Once lost its many many times harder to repeat and recover from it
