Someone else probably sold the program to her as being "good for you because..." with a lot of platitudes. Years ago, someone professionally proposed to me that I could have my credentials (which are difficult) and also get a CFA and be able to work in the same environment that CFAs do, and have far stronger analytical skills. I had no interest in it, and I asked the crediting group if there was a difference in pay between CFA and people with both credentials, and at the time, the answer was "no". Sounds like a bad idea, then. I'd bet the other CFAs would find it humorous to have someone boasting about their credentials to which they could respond ..."good for you, we make the same salary. I think I would've played golf".

There have been plenty of people on this show (white, black, hispanic, asian, male, female, high earners, low earners, Christian, Jewish etc.) and the majority of them have made bad financial decisions and I have heard lots of them (from every race, religion, income level) make excuses and say a whole lot of nothing for their bad financial decisions. That is why they are calling the show to get advice. It is unfortunate because I know you probably made this comment for attention. I hope you find the validation you seek through healthier avenues.

Her doctorate in nursing degree isn't costing her $300,000. I'm certain that includes her undergraduate loans and the fact that she has been living off her graduate student loan money because she isn't working full time. How do I know? Because I did the same when I went to graduate school for physical therapy. My tuition for those 3 years was $55-60K but since it was a full time program I didn't/couldn't work full time and I lived off an additional $55K of my student loans for 3 years! I learned about Dave Ramsey soon after I graduated. Now I have $39,000 of my graduate student loans left to pay off!

My mom has the same failed logic. She got a doctorate in Nursing because she assumed that getting a doctorate would advance her paycheck. After getting the doctorate (3 years after getting the Masters for NP) , her career didn’t change at all. If anything, it made it worse. By law, they have to pay a person based on their degree. It’s causing her job to continue to choose cheaper RN/Masters NP over her when scheduling work so she has massive problem getting hours. The debt from the doctorate is advancing more than her pay. Would have been way better off just working as an NP and actually used the Masters to be an NP. This lady, if she must get a doctorate, consider teaching.

A doctoral in nursing is a nurse practitioner. It’s an 8 year program but most people do it AFTER they’ve been nurses for many years and it’s NOT for the money because the difference between an RN and an NP financially, is not worth the debt she’s taking on. The ONLY time you should go into that much student loan debt is for an MD/DO.

A few things; one, school is far too expensive. Nobody should have to get into crippling debt in order to get the education they want. Something has to be done about this. Second, I agree with Dave that the Doctorate degree is useless for NP's & PA's (I'm a PA). I think it's just for the schools, so they can make more money. As far as I've seen with current jobs, there is no requirement of a Doctorate degree, and the pay is going to be the same as it is for someone with a Masters. Also, why wouldn't you just get an M.D. if you're going to get a Doctorate? As you can tell from this call, when she was questioned why she's going for a Doctorate, she didn't have a good answer... because there isn't one! We'd be better off to have more residency programs for PA's & NP's with a Masters degree.
