Күн бұрынWe Makers often use infrared light for their projects. Its main advantage also makes it sometimes hard to work with: It is not visible. This is what we will change today. We will measure its spectrum with a do-it-yourself spectrometer and build a wireless IR camera using a Raspberry Pi.

Bravo! What a fabulously interesting and useful video. The spectrometer using the fluorescent bulb as a source of known wave lengths to calibrate was so elegant and the results from that fascinating. I am a great fan of motioneye for wildlife studies using a raspberry pi Noir camera which gives great images in the infra red while remaining in total blackness in the visible. I had not realised that pla was transparent to infra red, suggesting some interesting projects. `Thanks for sharing!

I had not heard of the i-Phos, it is a great idea, I have messed around with I. R. and cameras in the past and still have one set up to look into black plastic cases for fault finding (it's nice when you can see what is wrong/identify parts in a device without even opening it) I have a diffraction grating and a couple of spare hours today... Let's play!

This episode serves several theoretical and scientific purposes. 1) It proves several physical laws that can be tested and applied by anyone (without a post secondary degree) and verified. 2) Illustrates how invisible light can be effectively *seen* . 3) Assist anyone interested in infrared technology how to analyze the quality of components necessary to develop security devices that must serve useful purposes. In fact, this is just the beginning of the exercise. In the laboratory, basic tests are not a replacement for the next step, the field. Field testing is where the real excitement begins. Spectrum noise comes into focus - literally. As usual, another great episode by the guy with the Swiss accent.

I totally agree, IR cameras are fun to play with. :) My smartphone has a auxiliary IR camera and a IR flash at the front, it's not a high resolution but it gets the job done. It has a germanium lens too, to block visible light and only allow IR. I can take pictures and record videos with little bit of tinkering.

Very interesting. Many chemistry lab equipment uses spectrum finger prints based on known light sources to identify substances based on absorption and reflection.

new graphical suite in this video, Great! Speaking of the small portion of code at time 08:30: thanks to my partial color blindness (some shades of red and green are attenuated in my visual spectrum, this is why for me a red signal is NOT a danger signal :-)) The code line written in red is illegible for my eyes, I think however that it is the same replicated in the screenshot published in the same image at the bottom right. Thank you for sharing your experiences!

I love this channel and your projects!! You can see the UV overlapping in your spectrometer into the IR band. Its very faint, but if you wanted to measure IR accurately you might consider adding a UV stop filter.

Nice video as usual... I have rpi IR camera...it had no two modes,worked right out of the box. Does yours have a filter - shutter? IR is great fun... many interesting small projects could be done..making invisible visible :).

No. Heat is in a different wavelength

This type of (near) Infrared acts like normal light generally, whereas far infrared can be seen as heat which is closer to the frequencies of microwaves and radios and requires slightly different sensors

I don't remember which non profit organisation it was, but it sells a foldable, cardboard version of the same... To be clipped to your phone. It was available on Amazon and I almost bought it.

If you need a quick and dirty IR checker, for like seeing if your TV remote is transmitting, the cell phone camera will typically show a lit up LED transmitter on a working remote.

Yes, it was a dp20v2a with a case. The DC power comes from an old laptop power supply.

You could got a 1080nm (laser) diode.... lasers for better calibration! Also the "NOIR" in the "Raspberry Camera Noir", means it is IR capable, for the people who are too fearful to remove the IR filter...

I was going to say the same thing. IMHO its name is a little confusing, but means "No IR Filter". Somehow dropping the word "filter" from the name inverts the apparent meaning... I used LEDs with "blue touch" for IR gates at the racing events. 4 LEDs provides enough IR light for up to 50 meters gates at a very sunny day, which is more than enough.

@@AndreasSpiess Nope. Just passed whole telemetry system to the buyer and that's all. Can it be documented at all? I mean, 4 LEDs driver by a P-Channel mosfet, 2 ATtiny13a, one to generate pulses on one end, another one to receive pulses from TSSOP on another end, and 2 L7805 to power everything up. Seems too simple to document.

Any modern cell phone camera can "see" infrared light! I use it regularly to check if my TV's remote controls work or if the batteries are exhausted

Camera is based on OV5647. I have similar one. Try using raspistill with exposure mode option set to night. I guess it switches camera to IR mode. Didn't try it with raspivid yet, but option should be available, too. Using that option produces much more usable "IR like night vision" pictures. I'll try to test it, if it is really IR.

I don't know if you are doing -black'n'white- analog photography or know someone who does, but if you want a daylight block filter get a piece of fully exposed and developed -BW- color film. You can easily cut a piece to fit into the camera and replace the original IR block filter for example. It's really weird when you look at the roll of that film with a camera modified like that, because you hold something black in your hand but the camera sees right through it. Oh, and also take a look at paper money with an IR cam. Don't know if it works with swiss francs (I'm pretty sure it will), but it does with Euros, Yen and pounds. You will be surprised!

I think you mean a fully exposed and developed of color film as a visible light blocking filter. A piece of B&W film like that will be an all light blocking filter--which is much less useful.

@@davidwillmore I'm pretty sure the piece I have is B&W film that I got from a friend, who was doing B&W fotography at the time. But I can't guarantee it. Are you sure B&W film is also blocking IR? If so, I will retract my statement and claim the opposite ;)

@@superdau yes, I am entirely sure. Film scanners that do scratch detection is IR to detect the scratches as they will block light of all wavelengths while normal "black" negative will only block visible light. If you scan B&W negatives with this on, you get a nightmare image from the very confused scratch removal code. Your friend might have had some of the c-41 processed "chromogenic" B&W film which was similar to color negative film but was sensitive to all colors.

I revoke my previous claims and changed the original comment. As for the other times I made people search for exposed B&W film only to be disappointed... let's just hope they never tried it anyway ;)

Hi Andreas! Usually normal cameras do pick up some IR. Definitely not as good a dedicated IR camera, but at least my phones can detect IR light. Used it to check the battery in remote controls when I didn't have a multimeter at hand :) Just out of curiosity, how does the big IR blink from the remote repeater looks on a phone or regular camera? Oh, and the DPS power supply: I didn't like the idea of banana plugs dangling from the back. If it falls off, it might cause a short or kill lower voltage parts. Also old laptop PSUs dont't have banana plugs. So drilled a hole, and added a socket for a barrel plug. Feels safer. And conveniently has the same diameter as the old laptop PSUs from my drawer.

I checked with my Sony RX10. It did not see any IR. Concerning the DPS: A good idea if you always use the Laptop PS.

Yes, I do that with my phone as well. Quite helpful when you have someone coming to you (I repair things for others) saying the remote doesn't work and "the batteries are new, I swear". Half the time it's still the batteries, but in many cases a few of the most used buttons stop working. And that's really easy to check with the phone.

Hello Andreas! May I ask you for a little test? Can you shine thrue your hand or finger, and see your veins in that camera ? I wonder if its possible and how effective is that. I'm thinking about making veins scanner (like fingerprint recognition), and I'm not sure if such price level is enough :)

@@AndreasSpiess well you can also use strong flashlight next to hand in the darkness and you will see at least few veins :) I was hoping this effect could be even better using infra red light and camera without ir filter. I guess vein scanners might use same technic.

Excellent video ! I would like to make an IR camera to photograph artists' oil paintings in the near infrared (800 to 1500/2500 nm). This allows you to see under the first pictorial layer. So I need an HD camera but which does not have an IR filter in front of the sensor. I saw that the new Raspberry Pi HQ camera could be suitable, but unfortunately it has an IR factory filter. Do you know a camera that could do the trick ? For my part I do not want to "de-filter" my Canon EOS camera. Thanks.

Old reply but most commodity cameras drop off dramatically at 1000 nm and don’t pick up anything above that. Getting a camera sensitive to IR > 1000 nm is going to be much more expensive than a pi cam

Hi, sorry i'm "off" topic. struggling with an esp-wroom32 nodemcu v1.1 how i can flash some recent espeasy (with webgui) on this board? i only succeded with r20100 which is rather old but at least it works to some extent. all the newer firmwares boot up with endless cycle of some c file error.

@@AndreasSpiess Thanx, i found some solution, succeeded to flash recent espeasy mega FW. seems the FW they offers does not work unless i burn addditional bootloader, partitioning data and another small bin in advance. as i flashed from cmdline all the bin files i have a decent running espeasy mega FW. now i'm suffering from some hardware bug about external power supply.

@@AndreasSpiess No need to take chemical Sir, just take using spectrometer to measure the emission, you are mentioning chemical spectophotometry, its not that I mean, taking only EMISSION rate doesnt need to take it chemically Sir in which I only want to know how to measure it using spectroscope

The substances which can measured with spectrometry have to have a distinct and stable spectrum. I o not know if SO2 has such a spectrum.

@@AndreasSpiess search FLYSPEC its an example of using a specctrometer to measure and Identify the volume of VOG released by a volcano which is an SO2, which is why I ask u if you can modify the program which there is a graph output to measure the SO2 content of a degassing of any volcano using this spectrometer, but since you have no Idea yet well. . . . .. . .

I thought cameras based on CMOS sensors were already IR sensitive - they actually add an extra piece of plastic in front of the sensor to act as an IR-opaque filter - you can turn (almost) any digital into an IR digital camera by removing this piece of plastic. That being said - different sensors have different specs and of course they try to engineer things to maximize visual spectrum - so the trick works better on some stuff than on other stuff.

The idea of using a webcam and diffraction grating for a DIY spectrometer was something that PublicLab came up with years ago. They even have a website you can upload a spectrogram to, to identify pollutants. publiclab.org/wiki/spectrometer

Andreas on another note (and now another comment) I did some experimentation and a project for a local innovation competition that involved some redistribution of the LED light pattern. I did not try to patent at the time though I was considering it. That turned out to be a good decision since I checked two years later and someone had patented the idea two months before I came up with it. Patents are weird. It takes 18 months for them to be published so it was not possible to know about that patent at the time of my idea. patents are published as soon as you give it to your office but only your state can see it to choose if your patent try fall into secret; if not then it is published for member country for the same purpose; after this it is published for peoples that pay to see everything before it go to public publication then if no one in this elite people want it you may have the patent you paid if no one patented it before .....

@@christophemalvasio5569the process I know does not work that way. A patent application is not published or publicly available upon submission. It has to go through the inspection process first and be granted. Upon grant its published (after a fee of course). Between submission and granting it takes about 18 months as far as I recall. During that time no one in the public knows about the patent application. What country are you in? I can send you some links on US applications. The EU application is a even more complicated. WIPO is a different thing. That is not a patent but more of a reservation system.

Some years ago I went through the process of getting a WIPO opinion and filing in the EU. The process is so long its just draws down funds. I stopped before designating further to membership countries.

Hi Andreas, hou should get some Perspex black 962 (look on eBay for example). This type of acrylic blocks visible light but passes IR light. May be helpfull for investigating IRnlight during daylight.

I don't know if you are doing -black'n'white- analog photography or know someone who does, but if you want a daylight block filter get a piece of fully exposed and developed -BW- color film. You can easily cut a piece to fit into the camera and replace the original IR block filter for example. It's really weird when you look at the roll of that film with a camera modified like that, because you hold something black in your hand but the camera sees right through it.

speaking of radio waves, dont you find it a bit odd that they couldn't detect the CMB at Professor Houruni antenna in the mountains of Armenia far away from the oceans, they also could never detect the monopole spectrum at L2, water is a good absorber of microwaves which also means its a good emitter of microwaves, me thinks we are all living in a lie.

Infact, the inventor of uv curable resin for makers, discovered the compound in dentist's office and asked the doctor for it's source. He brought several pounds of it. Bring too brittle, he hired a team to modify it for maker's needs

That i-phos spectrometer looks like a cool project, but it's not, it's a very low quality commercial product. The website doesn't even explain how it works, the hardware is closed, the software is closed, you can't even get the software without buying the device, it's not maker compatible at all.

I am not sure about your comment. The software is free afaik. And you can build your own camera using my link. Of course you have do do your own tests to find the right angle.

@@AndreasSpiess The software is provided via emailed link after purchase, I suppose it's a philosophical question whether that counts as free or not but it's certainly not open source and I won't be able to get my hands on it without purchase. I can certainly build my own if I'm up to the task but I will find very little in the way of resources at the i-phos webpage, the Wikipedia article on spectroscopy will be much more useful. I don't want to imply that I believe there's anything wrong about this device or the manner in which the creators has chosen to bring it to the world but as I said it's not particularly compatible with the maker philosophy.

I'm interested in mounting my spectrometer to use it with Theremino (free). Unfortunately, as a graduate student, I can not afford the i-Phos Spectrometer from Chris W the moment. Which camera would you recommend for this purpose? It seems ideal that the camera does not have an IR filter. I plan to use it to obtain the emission spectra of blue, green and UV LEDs, and CFL bulbs for my photochemistry studies. Thank you in advance for your time.
