Ever wonder what all those flashing lights are doing on a pinball machine? This special series entitled UNDERSTANDING PINBALL will show YOU what that machine is doing! Todd N. Tuckey, owner of TNT Amusements in Southampton PA, filmed this series back in 1989--actually editing it right in the camera on Hi band 8mm. It took several hours for each machine, but we think you will enjoy the results! You are RIGHT! FOUR Bally pinball machines used a 8 inch florescent tube! Rapid Fire was the first that had THREE 8 inch florescent tubes in it. This was a flipperless machine and a complete flop! The next three used ONE tube in the center--not lighting the backglass properly. To use up the cabinets, Bally then made 10,000 Mr and Mrs Pacman, 2300 limited edition 8 Ball Deluxes, and 1500 Centaur 2 machines!

Similarly Williams' Hyperball beat Wico's Af-tor by at least a few years for using an alpha-numeric display.

I worked for Wico when this game was being developed. The backstory is long and crazy, and I may give you a call and brighten your day with the hilarity. For instance: they originally wanted to use an aluminum pinball, thinking it would be a faster and more lively game. They ran into two problems. One, the ball would not activate the rollover switches because it would go over them. The engineers tried lighter wire rollover switches, but then the ball would go between the switch and the rail. The second problem, actually the more serious of the two, was that the ball would loft up off the playfield. It would hit the bumpers and targets high and destroy them, sending plastic parts all over the playfield. The aluminum pinball idea was abandoned.

We used to have one of these machines in our kitchen for 20 years, good times.

Yeah it was the centerpiece of the kitchen now there is just a crumby table in its place, and a hole in our hearts. lol Nah house was not giant, regular home we just had our priorities straight. Huzzah Sir , keep up the good work

I worked for a distributor as a tech in the 80's. Bought on of these for my house. Great game, loved the large playfield! Traded it for a snowmobile when the plastic brackets started breaking.

+mrkitsel Yes...the plastic brackets holding the coils did break prematurely if they got alot of play on these games...

always wondered what the game in that "perfect pinball hit" was, and now I've stumbled across it love these walkthroughs of the game and mechanics/circuitry.

I played this at a dude's work shop earlier this year. He was at Young Loud and Snotty in Atlantic Beach FL where I have games and told me about it. neat game

looks like the "o" for Oil pit and the "N" other were swapped. I wonder if you hit the "N" then hit the oil pit switch if it would give a bonus. these are awesome videos btw.

I noticed the only other pinball machine Wico put out was a home-use table called "Big Top" in the 70's.

thing was that this was actually sold by Sears when they decided to make home-use pinball machines to sell

Just a fact correction here. You say this was the 1st game to use a single light source for a backglass. Incorrect, my EBD-LE from 1982 uses the same setup.
