What Sujaat says is very true. To follow a legendary fathers footsteps in any field brings tremendous pressure on a youngster, who is in the process of exploring his own path. The expectations are so great, that instead of the genetic talent being nourished, it becomes a burden, till the shackles are broken. Sujaat comes across as frank, genuine and accomplished person, both as a human bring and as an artist.

If you want to see the kind of perfection needed for Indian classical music, just watch the hands of the two tabla players when they play together. The two are mirror images of each other - not a single movement here or there.

Arvindbhai, this brings back memories of Khan Saheb playing at your residence in Palmyra in late 60s while he was visiting from Simla and we sat around to listen to Vilayat Khansaheb. I have heard Shujaat at Stanford University fw years ago and he definitely is continuing the legacy of Khansaheb. Thank you for hosting this wonderful Baithak series.

First to Pt. Arvind Parikhji........... Thank you for sharing your "Baithak" with everyone especially person like me ... a classical music lover and living abroad for over 35 years. By listening this episode I felt so wonderful that I can't express in words. It brought me back to India our "Matrubhumi".But at the same time listening to Ustadji I was sad that that respect and appreciation for the Music Legends is lacking. And especially there is no Loyalty. I wish Pt. Arvindji and Ustadji my best wishes and pray to mighty God to give long "Ayush" to you both. And as far as Sitar Music....... "Wah Ustadji Maza agaya". Namaste from USA/Canada.

His solo album naina (not the duet one) and unforgettable sufis are phenomenal I use to listen to them again and again He says he's not a vocalist but for me his voice is way better then other professional singers. And above that his sitar also speaks which adds another point in his favour. Classical singers are always great Same goes with Shafqat Amanat Ali too but he can't play any instruments lol

A wonderful experience. His Yaman stands out in its own right and compares very favorably with his fathers long playing record of the 1970s. To me that recording is a gold standard. Thanks Arvindji. Would be nice to know the names of the two tabaljis who accompanied with much distinction.

Whenever Shujaat talks of his father, it is with a deep sense of resentment even though he may not overtly express it. Good examples are when he says he doesn't wear clothes with embroidery or jewelry. It's fine not to do that if he doesn't wish on his own, but he gives this impression that he does this because of disdain for a certain person in his life. Another example, when he says he is not getting programs because he is perceived as rich because of who his father was & so the programs go to somebody else. I understand that his father may have forced him into this profession but he ran away from home at a fairly early age. He had the power to pursue something else in the US, where nobody knew him. He didn't, nor like his father or grandfather practiced hard enough to excel. Now he is just yet another sitariya, who is in conversation because of his lineage. He should feel indebted that his name is talked about because of his father. I know a number of equally good musicians who toil in obscurity whose names are not mentioned in any settings.
@rikumca83
@rikumca83 6 жыл бұрын
I think he is very much indebted and he has explained it very beautifully. But he did pointed out that he is ultimately a different person than his father . He has a different personality so it's better not to compare him with his father .

He has deep respect for him not a disdain. you are also wrong on his not being indebted (legacy). Yes he feels the heavy burden of legacy and admitted it. But have respect for his taking independent path and being so honest about open about everything, which is so rare these days. which makes his TRUE ARTIST

Shujaat forgets that he gets concert only because of his father's name. He wants to get sympathy from people. He used to play much better before. only to cover this he takes 2 tabla players. So that he can just play the composition and rest... people are not a fool.

Shahid parvez and shujat khan are claiming there own style is self decisive idea to show they are also creative like ustad vilayat khan. Just using different taal is not enough to established new style than uvk was playing. Both are playing all patterns played by uvk with same layakari. New style need different treatment to all frame's notes during aalap and taans and some new patterns in jahla that only shujat khan is trying is good.

Clearly being Vilayat Khan's son has burdened him a lot and I appreciate him for his openness in how he dealt with it. But he is a poor sitar player at best. His name and his words have brought him far, not his music. However I empathize with his life, being a son of a famous man is very hard.

All that big talk about originality and raagdari and what the actual f does the guy go on to play? And why does he need two tabla players for a house baithak? As for the host, it is evident that age doesn't necessarily lead to wisdom.
