53 years sewing exclusively power industrial, Yuki, Singer, Chimako, Brother, Bernina, Pfaff, Rimoldi, etc. Sewing with industrial sewing machines is like playing baseball big leagues! Put it this way; you don't produce with a domestic machine. I've got my first one back in the early 70,s, it was a 400 W Singer, probably 50 years old at the time. Walk into a shop (LA downton) ask to the stubby guy with the pipe for the price of the black beauty and if I could put 100 dollars to hold it layaway. You can take it now and paid me the balance of 175.00 in monthly installments! Next he barked some names and two husky boys appeared, put the machine in my station wagon. He gave me some needles and bobbins. We most probably arrange the deal in sign language,I didn't speak enough English and he didn't speak any Spanish. I drove away floating in clouds, for the sake of me, can't remember how we took it to the second floor of our apartment 🙄 long story longer, my first project paid me back the 275.00 investment. Needless to said I paid my debt faithfully and kept buying my supplies from the same man, he moved 3 times anf I follow him. Last time I was in town heard from his son He passed to better life. The beauty of the 400 W or one of them is you can sew from heavy duty fabrics to soft delicate silks and lingerie better then Bernina, latter I acquire one more same model and install a special attachment to sew upper shoes. I size down more and more, the last two things I relinquished were my sewing machines, it was, still is painful. Sewing in a brand new domestic Singer a gift from a group of nice ladies at Church is a substitute. At my age still is hope in me, saving to buy me perhaps a Yuki such as yours. Thank You for bring back the only thing nobody can take away "my past" the readily retrievable memories. The present is ephemeral, the future so uncertain but the past is really my possession. Excellent video. Beautiful to see young people so interested in the old art, and sew it goes 💕

Thank you Lauren for the tour of your machine. I have the JukiTL 2010Q and the Janome HD9 and still have problems going through the thick layers of faux leather and canvas. I watch your videos and see this machine is a workhorse. Going this week to look at this one and the 1541S. Love watching you in all your videos. 💕

Hi Roxanne! I am shopping for a new machine for Quilting. I am looking a TL2010Q as it is "semi-commercial" machine. I have switched to the Quilt and you Go method of quilting, this method goes through 6-9 layers of fabric including batting. I am curious, since you mention trouble with thick layers, do you think the TL2010Q could handle layers of cotton/cotton blends and batting and what sort of issues did you have with the TL2010Q? Thank you for any words of advice and guidance you can offer as I keep killing my little machines and am researching in order to purchase a good quality portable workhorse for my needs.

Thank you for sharing. I have learned so much from watching your videos. You make it look so easy. After 6 months of sewing seriously I have outgrown my domestic machine that refuses to sew vinyl without skipping stitches. So frustrating. The Juki is one of my top picks but it’s big investment for a newbie. With time and practice I hope to be half as good as you. -Kristin in Cali

They are not heavy duty even though my brother Se400 goes through soft leather easily. But more and more are asking me to fix zippers on material that is harder to sew through. eekk I have to hand crank to get it through! I need an industrial one! So saving up for it!

I just bought the Juki 8700-H for my horse blanket repair business. I saved $from all my sewing service the last several months. I was in tears when I placed the order. The first of 3 boxes arrived today. Super excited. I too went through several Brother machines. My Singer Heavy Duty has been a workhorse and I'm still gonna use it. I consider the Juki an investment and not an expense.

I love yours! I went from a $50 dollar Walmart machine to a Kenmore sewing/embroidery machine to a Babylock Ellegante also a sewing/embroidery machine to a used Juki 5550 D for just a $100! ( I got it from a lady who sewed cotumes for movies in LA) It had a clutch motor and I purchase a servo motor off amazon and my husband replace it very easily! The guy who clean up my Juki wanted to charge me $500 dollars to change the motor. We bought it for $100 on amazon and replacing it was a breeze! I really want the one you have but, after spending so much in the machine I got I can’t for now. Enjoy it because it is a BEAST! I think they are the best and I wish I knew more about machines before investing in the Babylock Elllegante.

I live in an old (102 yo) 2 story house, not including the fully floored attic and concrete floored basement, so I'd be in the same boat as you were, Lauren with no help. I'd have to sweet talk one of they guys from my local home improvement store that I used to work with. I've really wanted a machine like yours. Bright side is, there's a Juki dealer and fabric store about a mile from my house and the husband of the lady who runs the fabric store, works on sewing machines.

Lol. I have an industrial sewing maching and I highly recommend for people who sew 80 hours per week. I too ran though many home type sewing machines (about 5 per year) before I thought of buying my industrial machine. Its like driving a brand new car. I will tell you about that fuse. If it burns out and it will, the machine will not run at ALL. They are very inexpensive, less that .25. As far as maintenance, there is not much, just keep the bobbin area clean and keep it oiled. I would keep some fuses handy just in case. Probably can get them at an auto part store. Hope I helped

I've already knocked the timing out after hitting hardware 🙄 but managed to fix it after watching Steve at Sewing Gold. I don't have speed control on mine (bought in UK) well I haven't got the same dial as yours so I don't think I have, so I need to learn to not be too heavy footed, especially when sewing near hardware 😳 I wouldn't have been brave enough to get this machine without having your video's to help me, so huge thanks from me! I have bought this sewing machine yesterday but I'll get it next month, because I've paid half of the money now and another half I'll pay next monght. that is why. am happy with this sewing machine. actually I was looking for a freearm walking foot machine, but my budget was not enough for that. that is why I bought this one. I'll try to start some home businesse for bag making. that is why this machine is also good enough to start with, and maybe later if my businesse got success I'll buy another freearm machine too. but for now this one is good enough for me.

Right over left ,left over right as we did in Girl Scouts yrs and yrs ago) lift the foot and you can simply pull the thread thru the machine .. most times you will only have to thread needle. Ten months ago I watched your video and decided when I bought one it would be a Juki like yours. I got it yesterday! Hand wheel is really hard to turn as well as changing the stitch length. I’ll try your tip of holding down the reverse lever to shorten stitches. I wasn’t able to put overlay on lining piece for zipper because it distorts thin fabrics. Is that too much pressure on pressure foot? #21 needle in it too. I’ll change that tomorrow as well. Getting lamps, oil and bobbins. Thanks for the list and the great video. I got a Chinese manual that has a little English but doesn’t answer anything. Thanks again. Hugs for Dorothy too!🥰

Not sure if you already fix it or not but, you asked. After you thread your thread through the whole on the bottom of the first “tension” nob you go straight to the tension nob on the bottom, pass it through the really thin bar the tension nob has then through the “elbow” bar that is to the left of the tension nob and when you go up then you thread it through that metal loop above the tension nob, the hidden bar you were talking about and then other metal loop on the other side. Not sure if this is well explained. If you find yourself braking thread or so it could be this.

My husband bought me a singer in 1994, I used it twice, plucked it into the closet, pulled it out in 2003 to make my first quilt for my dad. I placed the quilt just fine, but when it came time to quilt it, I broke the throat of the machine and he came home to me in tears. My Juki 1508 just showed up Tuesday and my husband tore a muscle in his arm taking up stairs to my sewing room..... still not together today because they forgot to send the manual with it so it’s still in parts.

There is a question I’ve been meaning to ask you. When I sew in mine even on the slowest setting I try to press lightly the foot pedal and this brings the machine to make a noise as if it will start sewing but it doesn’t start. Not sure if this is making sense. Then I press a little harder and it then goes kind of too quick. Did you adjust anything after having it set up? Mine doesn’t have a clutch motor. It has the quiet servo one with adjustable speed. I noticed you sew at a very low speed very easy and I’m wondering if I have to do anything else on mine.

Hello Lauren I just got my Du 1181n about a month ago, when topstitching my first finished bag the bottom thread was loopy in spots so I went on KZfaq and whatever your video and fierce Kitten video. I like how you thread your machine, I do not think Fierce Kittens machine is threaded right. What do you think?

Thanks for the very informative video. I watched it about a year ago after I bought my machine. I re-watched it tonight because it's about time to change out the oil and I couldn't remember what kind you recommended. One thing I noticed this time around was that you mentioned a couple other areas on top of the machine to watch out for when applying the oil, but your camera was still zoomed in on the pressure foot. Can you describe where those little spots are you were referring to?

I have a Juki 8700H (after killing my domestic!) but found it struggled with thicker stuff. My dad gave me some money and I had some sewing income too so bought a Juki 1541 DNU. I sew everything from fabric (sew my own clothes) to heavy leather so the combination is really good for me. My dining room is a gonna though haha

I love your videos! I found them when I started researching the Juki DU1811N. I have a question...did your machine come with the bobbin winder or did you add it? On many websites they offer option to add “automatic bobbin winder”.

Hello Lauren, Thank you for this video. Currently I have a Janome HD-3000 Heavy Duty sewing machine. I have definitely put it through some hard times and have thrown the timing off numerous times as well as broke several needles. Usually I am sewing multiple layers of 10 oz duck canvas, several layers of bull denim fabric and would like to sew medium to thick leather. With that being said, usually my sewing sessions are full of explicit language being heard outside of my sewing/office. My sewing projects are mostly cosplay and costuming projects.I have watched a few videos on the Juki DU-1181N and am really curious if it will suit my sewing needs and reduce my stress while sewing? Thank you in advance for any help.

I also own the DU-1181. I use it for leather sewing and heavy upholstery/canvas etc. I also own a needle feed DLN-9010 and use that for most of my normal sewing. If you are breaking needles and throwing off the timing you definitely will feel an improvement with one of industrial models. Reliable also makes a needle feed which is less expensive than Juki though I have not owned onw. I like my DU1181 but it is basic, no thread cutting, no auto knee lift but it definitely does the job. Get one, you won't look back.

Oh Lauren, I love you, "lets just huff it" omg I'm on the floor. I put my on off switch on the side so the kids couldn't walk by and switch it (brats). The thing on the switch I think is a fuse! My drawer came broken :-(. I need another magnet for my head to keep the seam ripper! I just noticed that sticker on mine too LOL.

I have been sewing for many years but this will be my first industrial. My domestic can't keep up with the bags I want to make now. I'm having such a hard time deciding.

It doen t stick so well after a while. . My question is: does this.model do cotons as well? I do love the walking foot for all the layers of leather and burlap and especially the topstitchings. But i am not so sure about linings. Thx for the answers and the awesome work you do.

What was so hard about using it? I’d love to get one, but I already have a Brother D755-B55-3, I think. I don’t wanna go in there and look…lol. It’s very old. My mom used to upholster and make custom draperies. It is so freaking fast. 4000 spm, dang. I changed the pulley to the smallest one I could get. Did several other recommended things. Still too fast and I am at the moment trying to make your Emily bag. I have thrown the material across the room! Lol. I need something slower. It has a clutch motor. Maybe a servo motor will help. I want to thank you like everyone else. You’ve helped me immensely. It does seem like a lot of folks are making bags now. Wondering if it’s worth investing in another machine or just go back to quilting.

Hello! Words of advice: Make sure you work out the problem of delivery of a heavy machine. Two, pay extra for full assembly of table and sewing machine, along with all extras you purchase! It is not easy to put together. Have them do all but add oil! You will be happy you did! I have just completed all this thanks to KZfaq videos! Difficult and 5 days of work! But i did it!Let the experts do it! :)
