When PNSO offered its Yangchuanosaurus shanyouensis, the small size of that disappointed and enraged many collectors. There were hopes of perhaps a magnus that would ‘rectify’ that horrible miscarriage, and at that time I remember dismissing it as a possibility.
Well I now eat my words, because this is the Yangchuanosaurus mangus, in all the size due this allosauroid. A massive theropod, this model matches and even exceeds in size the Allosaurs, Torvosaurus and Saurophaganax.
The high level of detail is complemented by an excellent paint job with of colour and layered blending. With lips, this one is bound to be a fast favourite.

Now this is a proper Yangchuanosaurus. I love how PNSO handles the lips on their theropods; not too lizard like but also follows the animals anatomy and biomechanics. I see lots of theropods reconstructed with excessive amounts of soft tissue on their face.

Indeed! I believe PNSO delayed till they could create something they were happy with. Which makes me really excited for their next release of any well known genera, such as the eudromaeosaurids. Those are going to be killer quality!

It’s funny, when PNSO revealed the Zuul and this at roughly the same time, everyone cheered for the end of the theropod streak. But after seeing both of your reviews, I’m still more excited for the theropod in this case!

@Killershrewfan This is one inexplicable strategy I have zero clue about. I cannot imagine what PNSO were thinking. Spread them out, and you get excitement for each and more sales. Cluster them together, people develop an indifference and adopt a wait and see approach. I have heard a plausible theory however: PNSO wanted to get rid of all the unlipped theropods they had on their docket so that they could start releasing lips. Imagine starting to releasing lipped theropods, and then you get a release that was unlipped. Makes sense to me! But yes, to your point, comparing the two, I really like this better. Zuul was disappointing for the shockingly plain paint application especially for the scutes!

I would like to see another Yangchuanosaurus. More akin to the Dan Folkes and Gabriel Ugueto interpretations…They showed Yang to be shorter in the leg and much more heavily built, probably second to Trex out of all large Theropods. They made Yang to look like a huge, pot bellied, squat Torvosaurus on steroids.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 6 ай бұрын
Yes I neglected to mention that this one actually has leg proportions that should have been more robust, as might be expected from a heavier more mature individual. Quite a few viewers have pointed that out, and I think they would certainly agree with you!

No apologies needed, everyone needs a break some time (: Thank you again for another wonderful review! I was expecting a comparison with their older Yangchuanosaurus and the Chungkingosaurus, but perhaps in an Instagram post (: The deep skull of this guy is quite eye catching to me, different from the more slender skulls of other allosauroids. Looking forward to their Alamosaurus, but wow I find it hard to predict what would come next... Still hoping for a Kentrosaurus from them though!

Thank you for your support and understanding! I did pay the 'price' for my break though... who knew we would hit by a barrage of so many offerings from what I can only guess are the two biggest competitors in terms of a Chinese company!

@@DinosDragonsFrom PNSO I already have Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis, Saurophagnax (which I use as largue Allosaurus fragilis or A. amplexus), Meraxes and Mapusaurus (Could be used as Giganoto). I consider them almost perfect, in terms of anatomy and proportions (if I consider Saurophaganax is based on some big Allosaurus specimen instead of the Oklahoma material). Right now im waiting to receive PNSO Megalosaurus, Gorgosaurus, Suchomimus and Acrocanthosaurus. After watching your videos for each like 5 times, Im confident they are pretty accurate too, although for the Acro I have some little doubts im going to give it a chance. Tyrannosaurus and Torvosaurus looks good too but because of the colors im going to pass for now, one by one, space is finite haha. For other collections I have Sideshows dinosauria Styracosaurus, Carnotaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Spinosaurus, Allosaurus vs Camarasaurus, Dilophosaurus, Deinosuchus vs Parasaurolophus and Velociraptor vs Protoceratops. And Schleichs old figures from the 90s and 2000s.

haha crazy how my guess was right after the shanyouensis was out that a magnus will appear too! obviously a must have too, i already have shanyouensis so i covered my most favourite theropod genus well i wonder if there is some science packing up the argument weather they are ontogenies of the same species or different species? all i found was that it was just suggested that they represent different growth stages, i didnt find any scinetific arguments about it so they either exist and i just didnt see them or its one of the cases where we just still need more material i personally will pretend like they are different growth stages Also that viewer of yours that you say that you wrote things a out the torvosaurus, in which video did he do it? I dont see his comment in the torvosaurus review video
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 7 ай бұрын
You need to scroll through the comments to look for John Avery. Unfortunately I couldn't pin his comment for some reason. It was certainly unexpected, but given the small size of the _shangyouensis_ and the point PNSO made to have it on the name, I should have suspected as much. Good call! As far as ontogeny, I believe it traces back to Carrano et al 2012, in which they suggested a phylogeny for tetanurae. They suggested both Y _magnus_ and _shangyouensis_ were named mainly due to differences in size, and that the maxilla of Y. _magnus_ had an extra fenestra in the antorbital fenestra, while _shangyouensis_ had only one. However they argued due to the tendency for older theropods to be more pneumatized, and that intraindividual differences in pneumatic features exist. So all this wasn't enough to differentiate the two. The obvious conclusion was that the smaller was less grown up. Accordingly reconstructions also who limb proportions more similar to juvenile theropods, while _magnus_ more robust. I didn't pick up on this, but it was pointed out again by John Avery in his reply to another comment.

Wow, this figure is so damn nice. Is this the first time PNSO has done this? two figures for the same genus. If that's so, I think it's another hint for what's coming in the future for PNSO figures. Because there are some genera with species that look completely different. And PNSO is paving the way, I think. Either way, this figure looks so nice, and I love the color scheme, the size, and especially the face. Thank you so much for this wonderful review, my dear sir. You are the best. 🖤

Good question. Although Yangchuanosaurus aside, I can't think of any major dinosaur with enough differences in terms of size and morphology that might justfy such separation. Triceratops _horridus_ vs _porsus_ maybe? That said I would rather they diversify more across genera and clades first!

@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 7 ай бұрын
Titanovenator is too poorly known for my liking. It's not even been officially described, so without seeing the fragments it's hard to tell if they would fit within this. I think you may be able to modify the skull sufficiently to get it more abelisaurid-like, but I foresee the largest challenge would be the ridiculous arms. Abelisaurid arms and fingers have very characteristic proportions, and I think you would have to sculpt from scratch and replace the ones on the Y _magnus_ . I think the head of Y _shangyouensis_ is going to be very challenging to do, for example you would need to retool the snout extensively. If you ever do it, put a video up! I would be interested to see what creative people can do! 😁😁
