271. Hollow 3D RESIN Casts FROM HAIRSPRAY?!!! WHAT?!
In todays Resin Art video, I show you how you can make hollow resin casts with just a coat or two of hairspray!!
This is INSANE! This resin art technique has so much potential! Imagine the possibilities!
We can make easy and fast resin shaker jewelry using our existing resin molds and pieces! You could also decorate the insides however you want to create insane 3D custom jewelry!
We also test this with epoxy resin to see if that works! You can see, I need to make some tweaks for this to work better!
i do not yet know if this resin art hack will work with all types of hairspray, if you try, let us know which work and which do not work so we can all learn together.

I can't wait to see what's to come I think using an epoxy inlay would be beneficial because I'm sure the skull was done in UV resin which may have caused the release issue. Id love to see it in 3 more ways , one with epoxy resin and epoxy inlay one with epoxy resin and eco inlay and one epoxy resin with clay inlay. Actually the eco and clay would be great to see in UV resin as well so I hope you give some of this a go! Just to see if the different types of inlays effect the results.. very intrigued by this one!

Not quite sure how to explain my idea...Will have to work on it to see if it will work, but.....I'm thinking of doing a 3D collage. Several thin layers, each with the same imprint but slightly offset from one another, and then the layers sealed together. Each imprint in a different colour so it resembles shadows. Sorry, I can see it in my head but not very good at explaining it

@@daniel..cooperit really does have a lot of potential. Like I said I think the issue was you used a UV resin piece as the inlay vs using a clay or epoxy I think you would get the results you want with making sure the inlay is made from the same material or im curious about ecos and clays releasing too

So....I would do the heart shape and add a small picture inside, like a loved one or a pet, then back it with the clear plastic and colored resin. Or print out a favorite poem to put inside. Wedding vows. A lock of baby's hair. Ashes. All kinds of options. Alternatively, I'd color the inside shape with mica or chameleon powders, then back it with a contrasting color. Lovely keepsakes or pendants.

I just love you showing the trial & Error side of creating! I already have ideas. I’ve been thinking for some time now about a hollow mold where front & back.. for putting tiny mementos like a baby’s 1st tooth or lock of hair, etc. Also, you may want to try glycerin ; I’ve made things like a snow globe. I’d use that with some glitter or tiny decorative flakes. Looking forward to what’s next!!

Daniel, I think this is your best experiment yet. I have an online Catholic gift store, as well as traveling to parishes and conferences, and I have a beautiful collection of antique/vintage medals. I have put the medals straight into my jewelry pieces, but they are more costly. So, I cast some of them in a silicone mold and they were just an ok. The medals have a lot of detail and the didn’t necessarily translate well with the silicone mold. I had thought about reaching out to Wendy @ Toonpish Crafts and see if she had any ideas as to how to make inlays since the relief on the medal is inverted from her wax stamps. BUT…. This…. This is a game changer for me. I’m super excited about this. Thank you! Personally, I like it when you show the whole process as opposed to skipping parts. I appreciate you showing the mistakes as well.

Fun video! You might have fun making molds from hot glue, which preserves detail surprisingly well. You can use alcohol to release the mold, and it’ll become flexible like rubber. It works well for UV nail gel, but not sure about resin. Might depend on how hot it gets while curing. Figured if anyone would be up for trying it with resin, it would be you. 😊

I said it before but why not, You have come up with many imaginative and inventive ways of working with resin. The school glue thickening , the plastic clay, the free form resin in baby lotion, shaving creme, your white sinker, the hair spray idea and other ideas. Seriously If I had a back ground in chemistry or resins I'd be reaching out as we know the world of resin has a lot of limitations but also a lot of potential as well as you have shown us. When I first started with epoxy and UV resin, I watched a lot of YT videos about it, but most were about what you can't do or won't work etc. with touchy/difficult/$$ resin. It made me a little apprehensive, but as luck with have it, I happened along here a few years back and I said "whoa who's this ?" anyhow for thank you showing there more than one way to skin the proverbial cat so to speak.

If you're worried about cure inhibition with the UV resin and silicone for the inserts, try tin-cure silicone. It's usually more resistant to the chemicals that cause the inhibition that UV resin produces. Making molds from resin 3d prints have the same kind of problem. I would make a "master" with the tin-cure and epoxy and from there use the platinum-cure silicone to make the "production" inserts.

Great hack Daniel! That said, (as you suggested...) you can always use the completed UV resin one to make a silicone mold and drop that into the epoxy ones... Just a thought. Thanks, D!

I got mold release to work 🎉 2 good coats and let it dry for 3 hours in between, then 12 more hours in the same room as the pour. Used Craft Resin brand resin and let it cure for 6 hours before un-molding. Only put pressure on skull from underside and it literally popped out without needing to pull from the topside. The skull did shift position during cure, approximately 2 hours into cure. Leading me to believe initial placement needs to be more accurate because of the displacement of the resin, or holding the 'skull' in place for a bit until the resin compensates enough to hold. I also tried an intricate patterned button (plastic) at the same time and worked beautifully. Next will be an aluminum stud type piece in a larger flat mold. Thank you so very much for starting this journey. ❤
