Those shots of him walking around a deserted London still amaze me. There's like 9 million people in London (maybe only 8 million when they made this) and having been there multiple times over the last 30 years, they really pulled off a stunt by shooting early enough to not get any people in those shots.

There’s a brilliant channel I love called Val verde broadcasting well worth checking out that with 28 days later commentary. They do a good analysis on how if you cut everything out digitally it wouldn’t have the same effect as they did on this. Also notes how back in 2002 whenever this was filmed you couldn’t have the same today as London is so much more busier then when it was filmed.

What you were saying about Jim when he's taking out the soldiers is exactly the point. The Zombies are infected with RAGE and spreading it through ultra-violence and extreme blood spillage. That is why this is more terrifying than most "Zombie" movies, it is potentially inside all of us...

What truly terrifies me about that scene is that all those people killed themselves in their house of worship instead of fighting for survival. Also, the fact that the priest is infected (not dead) means he was full of shit. He told his followers to drink the Kool-aid (or whatever form of suicide) but didn't do it himself. Regardless your opinion on religion is, that scene has an incredibly strong yet subtle message.

This was one of the first movies done with completely digital cameras rather than film cameras. Hence, the graininess of the movie. The tech wasn't quite there yet. However, because digital cameras were lighter than film cameras and cheaper to use in the long run since you didn't have to buy rolls and rolls of film, it was way more cost effective and they were able to get shots you couldn't get if you had used a film camera. If the director, Danny Boyle had opted for film cameras, he could have never shot this. The London shots were done early in the morning before the city woke up for work. They didn't close down streets. They simply showed up with digital camera in hand and filmed as much as they could, as quickly as they could. And, personally, having wandered around London very early in the morning, (I got lost. Long story for another time.) let me say, an empty London is indeed very spooky town.

Of the two big zombie pictures of the early 2000s that helped start the now-tiresome zombie craze, this was by far the best, with the “Dawn of the Dead” remake a respectable second place. “28 Days” turned the whole thing on its head in terms of narrative and characters, and it worked well (so well that “Walking Dead,” ahem, borrowed the coma thing when Rick similarly woke up from a coma in a hospital after getting shot amid the TV show’s zom-pocalypse about eight years later). The inferior sequel “28 Weeks Later” is worth seeing, as it begins really well----it peters out and doesn’t know where to go, so it got goofy, but it’s still worth seeing, particularly if you’re curious about what happened in England after the first wave of zombies died off. The other end of the spectrum is the bloated, CGI-heavy, over-the-top and stupid "World War Z," which represented everything that's wrong with Hollywood today. It's exactly what I would have expected after a bunch of studio execs in a room decide, "Hey, we need to make a big zombie movie to take advantage of this trend. We need a big name, maybe Brad Pitt, and get the computer guys on this. Make it BIG and LOUD, you know, like a Fast and Furious/XXX thing......"

28 Days Later definitely redefined the Zombie genre of movies. It's nice that every few years or so there is a genuinely good Zombie movie or property that comes out. It's surprisingly consistent compared to a lot of other genres, although the amount of absolutely trash zombie properties give the good ones a bad name. #Alive came out last year and was pretty good IMO. Not perfect, but still good. And Train to Busan was just incredible. Another absolutely underrated Zombie flick that deserves a mention in the new era of Zombie movies is REC. Didn't change the genre or anything, but it's a great addition to the genre.

@@soberscrim299 There is an audio book that is apparently really good. The most frustrating thing about the World War Z IP is that it could have been a legitimate franchise. There are things mentioned in a single line in the book which could be films on their own like the idea of a the man reinforcing an ancient castle in Wales that becomes a haven for survivors, or the story of the students who fortified the university campus, and that's without getting in to the tales of people that became whole chapters.
@arkenhemnall6224
@arkenhemnall6224 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnonEyeMouse to be fair even if the production ran smoothly and everything went according to plan the film didn't really reflect the unique character of the book or the undead. WWZ is fine as a zombie flick in its own right, and as a film ok to sit back and watch, but the major changes from slow to fast zeds and from changing the structure in the book of individual survivor accounts to how the film just followed Jerry Lane (of whatever his name is) was two stark differences that diverged too much from the book. A film that reflects the strengths of the book would be most welcome, and yes, even as 2 differing mediums I'm sure a film could be made in a much closer vein to the written source material. All the best 👍🏻

Eh, as far as I'm concerned, they can be not zombies when they stop looking and acting like zombies. You don't necessarily have to die to become a zombie. It depends on the rules you pick since zombies aren't real. In the resident evil games and in world war Z they turn without dying and just sort of degrade into a zombie. In Japan, they just sort of hop around. In Arabic stories they're more like ghouls. In Haiti and Africa they're undead slaves. In the US, however, we just don't fucking KNOW what we want a zombie to be. Same goes for the UK. So Danny Boyle can say that all he wants to, he's just being pretentious by acting like his zombies being not dead is somehow original. Still a great movie, though.

18:33 the fires in the city wasn’t exactly “their” tactic. I’ve read that during the early days of the outbreak the military and armed police forces were in constant retreat from their forward bases and blockades meant to be defensive lines to slow the infection between the cities like Manchester, and London. As the lines began to falter and forced to withdraw or in most cases, become overrun by the infected; entire motorways were left open for the infected to swarm into the cities. So with added loss of communication, Manchester was one of the few cities that fell in less than a day. Eventually a decision was made by the displaced government to fire bomb the city of Manchester. I’m sure the strategy behind it was to exterminate the infected inside the city but what they didn’t count on was that it would drive them out and force them to flee to the outlying villages and smaller cities that had no idea what was going on. In turn spreading the infection further. And I think the reports of infection reaching Paris and New York were fabricated during the exodus because the government didn’t want to risk a further spread of the virus to its neighboring allies. I don’t know if the director ever confirms this all as ‘canon’ to the story but it’s a good read on AlternateHistory. Google ‘28 days later outbreak timeline’

28 Days Later is my favorite zombie/infected film along side Train To Busan, and glad that you reacted to both of them now :). My 3 favorite horror films overall is Blair Witch 1999, John Carpenter's The Thing, and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.

Its not a Zombie movie but may I suggest EVENT HORIZON as a movie this month. Probably the only movie that actually scares me....although its probably because I originally saw it when I was 13. Still, creapy AF movie. 28 days later is probably one of my favorite zombie movies too. 28 Weeks later... not so much. I don't think it is a spoiler but the guy's idea of Quarantine is correct. 28 Weeks's premise is based on it. Plus it makes complete sense. If you see how quickly a person can get infected there is no way it could make it across an entire ocean (unless deliberate, or some dumb decision to take an infected there) a most a boat could have an infected and drift over. But with a world on watch it would likely get bombed on the way. There is another way it could get to Europe. Europeans would know this pretty obviously but I won't spoil it for anyone.

@@sonofmoss definitely isn't I'm guess people who call it a Zombie movie are actually meaning "Horror" but just use Zombie as a term instead because of limited experience with the genre.

He has also written and directed some other great movies including 28 Weeks Later, 127 Hours, Yesterday, The Beach, Sunshine, Steve Jobs, Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting 1 and 2, Shallow Grave, Trance, A Life Less Ordinary as well as many other great movies.

The reality is that "only if they had arrived a few minutes earlier" is part of their plot. They were there the whole time and waited for the opportune time to get rid of the strong. Side note: Original ending had Jim not survive, or suggest he didn't. It went the same but didn't show him wake or have him run out with the girls. There was also an unfilmed one that when into a whole other direction where they find a dude who can cure it but it involves an entire boy blood transfusion and didn't mesh well with the facts established before (i.e. a single drop is enough so how could just a transfusion work.

Such a great film, happy you liked it so much. It was one of the first feature films shot entirely on digital video and not film, that's why it has that unique picture quality. It works really well for the subject matter, and gives the movie that personal or real feeling that a typical glossy blockbuster just can't. It also made it cheap enough to for them to produce that they were able to fund the movie in the first place.

When Frank got it and was killed....... Oooof I remember seeing this movie when it first came out in 2003 and I was 13 years old..... that scene made me cry crocodile tears. Even now, age 31, seeing you get choked up at the same place really resonates with me. This film is truly an anomaly even to zombie films. I always wondered if the soldiers were there the whole time and were just waiting for an excuse to waste some of the extra males, given what we learned about the troops later.
