I worked at taxi company in the early 70s and they had a couple of these, but they were only used on special occasions, like if someone scheduled a long distance trip, or if they were expecting some real high class sophistos at the airport. I remember it being a big deal to get to drive the kingswood. You had to be one of the companies better drivers, and you knew had to be extra careful with it, and it better be clean when returned to the cab stand. Fun memories.

Guilty! Except for the Chevy part. In '69 my Dad wanted to replace our '62 Country Squire (the 6-passenger model for our family of 8.. back when having a seat and belt for everyone wasn't such a big deal!). He had wanted a '69 Kingswood Estate, but the salesman tried to talk him into a Chevelle. So he went to Mercury and bought our beautiful new Colony Park. Our first road trip was coast to coast, as we were moving to Germany..That big American car on those narrow old roads over there was sure a sight to behold, tho! The looks we got in that beautiful brute. Yep, get misty-eyed, remembering the good times.

The tailgate also swings open like a door. When open the bumper had a step built in. You can see the cut out on the right side of bumper. Bring back old memories.

Nice. The same year and color of my mom's KE wagon, but it had a 350 V8 and the standard hub caps. A wagon that big sure came in handy on the farm.

Back in the early 80's, I had an elderly couple who were customers at my bank branch. They had a '70 Kingswood in red with a red interior, 454 and full power. It was then 12-13 years old and only had 40,000 miles on it.

My 2nd car (back in 1973) was one of these only a 1969, basically the same car w/o woodgrain. For some amazing reason the car (despite being the Kingswood with A/C etc.) came with non-power drum brakes all around. The WORST brakes I have ever suffered through. Mine had the 300hp 350 and the infamous Chevy broken motor mounts, which found me with the throttle stuck to the floor at a gas station and heading towards a parked steamroller. (With the broken motor mounts, the engine would raise up out of position, pulling the throttle linkage wide open.) When you stepped on the brakes the gas needle would float up about 1/4 of a tank worth because of the position of the sensor and the tank being mounted upright. I had a lot of good times in that car, took it up to 112 with the a/c on and tires I had made bald through abuse, but never missed it when I traded it on a Plymouth Fury 440 with power disc brakes. Thought I'd gone to heaven. The wagon had 62,000 miles on it when I traded it in and I thought it was 'tired', now I buy cars with 100,000 more miles than that and they're like new.

This car has the same body style as a 1970 Chevy Townsman wagon that my Dad bought for a 3 month holiday that our family took around the States in 1977. It had the same gold paint color too, but not the woodgrain sides. I assume the Kingswood was the luxury model and the Townsman was the standard version. I am from New Zealand but now live in Australia, and interestingly, Holden (GM's Australian brand) built a Holden Kingswood from the early to late 70's. It was slightly smaller than these cars, but big by Australian standards - it had a 202 cubic inch straight six and was very popular in Australia and NZ as I was growing up.

That wagon is beautiful, dreamt of having a cool car like that when we were kids....Did someone rebuild that small block 400, or was it just repainted?

Bob Barker use to give these away all the time when I was a kid. I have always wanted a kingswood but never drove the wagon. I still have my 72 Impala 4 dr sedan with less than 50,000 miles on it. I destroyed a 74 2dr as a punk kid , what a shame that is !! Thanks for sharing I just love the wagons of days gone by !! 1957 Nomad anyone ??
@larryhawkins32944 жыл бұрын
Most of the autos Bob Barker offered for bid were minimally equipped Chevy II Nova, Plymouth Valiants and a AMC Hornets and Ford Mavericks. They gave away nicer cars on the night time version of the Price is Right. I remember in 64 Bill Cullen gave away a loaded air conditioned 64 Impala Super Sport convertible one week and a loaded 64 Pontiac Bonneville convertible another week.
