In The Tolls and Gallows of Coggeshall we look at a road that has had several names in it's past on of which points to gruesome goings on in Coggeshall's history.

As I have often said it is good to look at a small location in detail, this is why this video was so satisfying!

Another very interesting video, Dave. There is a lane not far from me that is still named Gallows Lane, where local hangings took place. The tale is told that the hangmen used to earn their fees by selling off pieces of rope, and the more notorious the person hanged, the more folk would pay. Hence the origin of the saying "money for old rope." Yours is an interesting tale as always.

When DrWilliam 'Saintly Billy' Palmer was swung at Stafford Jail (on the 'new portable gallows', no less) Smith o' Dudley, the hangman contracted with a porter at the railway station to spin him the rope. The porter duly made twice as much as ordered, delivered half and, cutting the rest into 6 inch lengths, flogged it round the local pubs as being genuinely part of the rope which hung Palmer

You should walk down there at night and see if you spot anything out of the ordinary or feel something eerie😱 Must have been a lot of bad people there if you needed two places of execution. Seems you had a fan at the end😁😁
