Agree with Harald, stupid comments. I know these fishermen personally, and fish with them every year on this very trip. These men have ultimate respect for the fish, always release and handle fish the correct way. And they are excellent fishermen that know how to fish dry fly the correct way on this river. Dead drift for 4 or 5 feet, recast: that's the drill in this neck of the woods boys and girls. Here, surprising the salmon is the key. Watch Mike's video's and look at the results - they speak for themselves. This is a beautful fish taken in #5 pool! Keep prospecting my friends - see you later this year! Doug

upstream mend might do the trick that way you could keep your flie in the water for more than 0.5 seconds before your flie skates and casting again !!

@@TheOshaug kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMWTa9pmuayXZHU.html This video explains a mend. It keeps the fly drifting on the water longer before the current grabs the line and drags the flies across the water. Fish like to see a dead drift with no drag. You can see when the fish took the fly it was drifting very nicely before the current grabbed the line.

no disrespect (its a great catch+good guiding).. My small issue here is the fish handling.. He was rubbing it so intensely from 9:50 on ... I get loving the fish, as seeing/handling the creature is a huge part of fishing for me (i got that steve irwin streak too.. ) but even though it was underwater handling still mildly effects SLIME COAT. Ever see a spawning chinooks/brown/bow etc tail with infection couple days after redd digging? intense sliding like that is not great.. I'd want that puppy to spread its big fish genetics

Stupid comments. The fish rose to the fly, didn't it? I like the guy's attitude, he's cool. And the respect they show fish is laudable. No photo's of grinning fisherman holding the fish above the water. And no idiotic screaming. All in all, an example to follow.

to increase your prospecting, you need better line maintenance. in order to avoid a belly forming in your line, keep your tip higher, and also use a small mend to the first 1/4 of your line. straight lines catch fish, like the one you landed. the more time your line is on the water, the harder it is to keep straight, instead of recasting your line when it bows, repositioning it is a better option, because it keeps the fly on the water longer. hope this helps, tight lines!

Hi I was using a 2X Brown Bomber on this pool...I find it is a great "prospecting fly" that tends to entice either a look or a strike by the salmon. Thanks for your kind words...these videos are fun to film as my brother and I love to relive those moments we share together fishing. Take care and Tight lines! Mike

Nice catch! Some tips from an avid salmon angler: You want the dryfly to drift as freely as possible as long as possible over the potential window of a salmon. Thus do not pick the fly for the next cast as aggressively, while still in the window as in this video. Let it drift well over the sidomw, and only then gently lift it for a new false cast. And to be able to have this longer free drift in the first place, you have to reach cast when casting upstreams, and parachute cast when casting downstreams. A very long leader is also essential here. Double the lenght of your rod, at least. On the contrary to normal fishging situation, you don't want your leader to straighten when dryfly fishing for salmon. A long leader will help you to generate the necessary slack for the fly to drift as freely as possible as long as possible.

@stevei.8085

I would say it may have been a lucky cast to a fish that happened to be 2 or 3 feet downstream. You can catch fish without a mend, but you increase your chances with a mend. The longer the fly is on the water, the more chances there are for a fish to take it. You should always be able to get around a 5 to 10 ft drift.

Why? It isn't trout fishing. It is Atlantic salmon fishing. He feels he knows where a salmon is laying. He casts to that spot, gets a 2' -3' drift and if there is no take he doesn't care if there is drag. He just picks up and recasts to that same lie.

I've waded tons of times...caught the Lion's share of my salmon this way. Some pools at Larry's are deep and difficult to wade. This pool is in that category and getting a Dry out that far from the bank (water gets deep quick and the bank is tight to shore) is just not practicable. Mike
