Video created in 2021 - 5 December
Here's a timelapse video of sculpting stylized/fantasy character 2B from NieR Automata. In this video I'm showing you how I sculpt her head and hair primarily. Everything is sculpted and modeled in Blender, hair polish and vertex paint done in Zbrush, rendered in Cycles, final images compositing was done in Photoshop. This is part of a bigger project where I want to make a full body of her, that's why in the renders it's still labeled work in progress.
The video is consist of many different sessions put together into one. Any skipped or unrecorded footage are due to technical errors or to protect the privacy of the creator such as if file explorer shown visible sensitive information regarding personal information or work-related for example while saving or export-importing files.
Any reference images seen in the video I do not own them. It's all screenshots from the game or images found in Google and it's all for references and educational purposes only.

I'm very sorry, but I have to take down the NON-timelapse version of my 2B Head and Hair Sculpting Video Process in my Gumroad. I got informed that it would be a problem with Square Enix moving forward. I don't want to take any risk. But don't worry, for the people that bought it, you guys can still able to keep the files. But for people that are want to buy it. It's not available anymore. Once again, I'm very sorry for the inconvenience 🙏 In return. I will make another product showing my sculpting process in real-time in the future with completely my original character. Hopefuly with better editing and possibly with narration too!

Got another question, when smoothing a really dense mesh, is it better to increase or decrease the brush strength? Also does the setting also affect the results(i.e. changing from laplacian to surface smoothing under the brush tab) cuz one shrinks the volume of the mesh when smoothing while the other one doesn't. Tried the surface setting but it didn't seem to do anything?
@Yudit1999
@Yudit1999 2 жыл бұрын
I pretty much just using the default setting for the smooth brush lol😂maybe I'll switch up the strength here and there but that's about it. The more dense the mesh i usually use higher strength.

what lens do you use when you're sculpting? i'm new at sculpting and blender and every time i switch from ortho to perspective, they look totally different. but yours look accurate to every angle and mode? i tried to google for my answers too, but there doesn't seem to be a good consensus... what do you recommend? great vids by the way.

Thanks, I sculpt most of the time in orthographic, I only use perspective with 200-250mm in Blender specifically for checking if the model is working. Sometimes I use camera ranged from 75-250mm for checking as well.

Does focal length matter while sculpting? I have been told by people that it makes stuff easier? What focal length are you using, if youre not using the dafault?
@VertexCarver
@VertexCarver 2 жыл бұрын
Both Blender & Zbrush has the camera default at 50mm I think. For portraits, it's pretty nice to up that to 85 mm = ( 28° I think ). It's about setting up a balance between depth & sculpting preception. For example, an Isometric view basically has no depth & a high FOV distorts everything (in Z-axis), both extremes are unworkable. I believe most photography portraits are shot between 80 - 120 which to me are more flattering close-ups while a fish-eyed lense ( 8 mm ) captures 180°.

Sculpting with focal length means that you're in perspective mode right? I don't really use perspective mode for sculpting. If you saw my videos I use orthographic a lot. I only use perspective for checking every now and then. I usually use between probably 75-250 mm.

Interesting, really like your work ^^ I realize now that I switched up the words isometric & orthographic. Looking at your process, we don't have that of a different workflow I think... I fiddle around a lot more I guess, but I'm often pursuing a different style so it's not that odd. Edit; My bad, didn't mean to apply a "Do this" or "Don't ever" attitude in my original comment.

Hello, I am a beginner in Blender. If I want to make a work like yours, or even an animation, where should I start to practice? I took a Mayan animation class in a university course, but I did not touch the sculpting brush part. They are all modeled with points, lines and areas. When I started to get in touch with Blender, I didn't know where to start.

Hello, how is blender more convenient for sculpting than zbrush? sorry for the mistakes, translated via google translator

Much of my reasoning is because I started learning with blender so by nature I'm already much more comfortable and experienced with it. It's just personal preference really. Other might find Zbrush more convenient.

Stunning, as always. Your 2B interpretation is spot on. The only critique I have isn't art related. I'm begging you, please don't loop the same song for 50 minutes next time. xD Lastly, I have a few questions: 1. What exactly do you use the 3D grid for, checking proportions? Do you have a matching grid placed over your off-screen reference images? 2. Why do you use Zbrush for vertex painting over Blender? 3. You also did some interesting work with the shaders. It's nothing complex, but I'd love to hear about your creative thought process. With that out of the way, I wish you a fabulous day. Have fun sculpting the body!

Thanks! Lol, I'll probably loop it for 2 hours next time. I just don't want to give credit to too many songs. 1. I have been using that style of grid reference since back in the day. It's just to make sure that the proportion are good. 2. Blender's current vertex paint are not usable at high res meshes. 3. I'm not sure what you mean by interesting 😅 Cheers!

@@Yudit1999 Not in Blender 3.1 alpha where you have Paint button in Sculpt mode and vertex colors rollout in the side window of mesh properties (somewhere around vertex groups ) . And this vertex paint can be used as texture in the shader node editor. I have used it on 8 mil poly mesh on low base clock CPU with no lag.

Great, you ditched Zbrush for polypaint substitute. But, get 3.1 Alpha and it has pen pressure, of course not in Vertex Paint mode, but in Sculpt mode and here is Paint button which allows you to vertex paint even on the much heavier meshes. And you can use it as texture in every node - diffuse, specular or mix.
