Using a breather repair kit by Burton to repair an original Citroen engine breather.
This was the first time I've done this job. Took me about 40 minutes. Nice job, with a couple of fiddly moments.
In this video, I forgot to film the fitting of the upper coupling ring, which comes in two halves. It's very easy to assemble: just push its halves together around the upper section of the breather. Then it's ready for you to screw the lower coupling ring onto it.
A-series engine breathers tend to wear out after 5 years or so of daily use. When they stop working properly, they can create a partial vacuum inside the crankcase. This means that at the point of a potential oil leak the engine tends to suck air in rather than leak! If you open the breather's lid with the engine running oil and fumes will always gush out. On each down stoke of the piston any air inside the crankcase is compressed, if pressure cannot escape the resulting power loss can be 2bhp. (5mph from top speed, 6mpg consumption increase).
