Stage 4 - Vietnam - Hot LZ
The helicopter replaced the horse and that reinvigorated cavalry tactics.
Cavalry during the Civil and Indian wars (and before) would navigate rapidly to the flanks, or even behind the enemy, dismount and form a skirmish line. Cavalry is frequently the "tip of the spear" during an assault, or the last to leave the battlefield during a retreat. The helicopter brought these cavalry tactics back into spotlight, even more so due to the very challenging terrain of the Vietnamese battlefields.
During the Vietnam conflict, forces were dropped straight into the fight - frequently exiting the helicopter while under direct fire, this being referred to as a Hot LZ.
We're going to get a lot of comments on this, but the Colt SP1's A1 birdcage IS period correct, although maybe not specifically for the Battle of Ia Drang. The original 3 prong flash hiders were prone to damage, collection of debris, and abuse by the soldiers so the A1 birdcage replaced them gradually over time, starting as early as 1967.

Karl is right- the original lightweight guns have their good points. I was in LE for 20 yrs. After using Mini-14's for awhile, the agency got 4 milsurp M16A1's and 1 pre A1 from DRMO. They shot fairly well. Took out the auto sears and used them for a bit. I put night sights on them. A group of us took advantage of a deal we got on 16" Bushys during that time (luckily in Kali cops can buy semis with a letter- damn politicians doing divide and conquer). The PD provided eotechs; very nice of them. After a while the accuracy of the milsurps fell off; they had headspace and other problems. New 16" uppers with a receiver rail went on those. At some point we switched to Aimpoint PRO's, agency provided one for everybody (thanks a second time!). Local gunsmith built some AR's with nice lights for the neighboring agency. We usually shot together and those guns were quite accurate. An AR is almost ideal for a patrol rifle. I was pitching the concept of designated marksmen with 308's since we were a small agency and county SWAT would take too long to muster and get somewhere. I would even use a hunting rifle if i had to, but my plan was a 308 AR with a low powered variable mag optic (1-6x or thereabouts).

I'm right handed and left eye dominant, and red dots tend to disappear after a bit if peering through a scope. I have to squeeze my eyes shut for a second to reacquire.

Karl keeps saying he's a "pilot", but based on your helicopter I'm starting to wonder if this "F4" is really an F150 a little worse for wear. Excellent stuff as always guys. I'm not generally a fan of just watching people shoot but when you start to get into the historical stuff or mucking about with equipment or just tying your shoelaces together 'cause .. well why not? One of the best things on KZfaq.

Late comment I know but I like the discussion about the sight. When I was in the army in Sweden we did lots of training with the cover of our aimpoint closed so that you could not see through it. I think the idea was that you were supposed to always have it closed while out and about and just have it open when you were sure you would fight and so we did scenarios where we got ambushed etc and had to shoot with it closed and it always worked great for me. I know that some people had problems with it though, something to do with their vision and the brains ability to match the pictures from both eyes. This might be the reason your results when shooting with the sight were so different. My tip is to just try to open your left eye as much as possible and like you guys said really look at the target, because when you are tired and the sight picture just really isnt there atleast for me you close your weak eye to try to find the picture through the sight, but then with this set-up all goes black. So you just gotta force your weak eye open. If you stick to that and your fundamentals are solid the dot with appear where you look even when the tube is dark. The brain will like Ian said do the job. I would not recommend it at 175 yards though, But you know up to a 100 on a man sized target is fine as long as the dot is not too big. All that said though it is miles better to shoot when you can also see through the sight.

The thing in my opinion for the ar15 is that really you want is 3-4 things on it AT MAX. 1. Optic, your choice 2. Flashlight (and/or Peq box if using nods) 3. Foregrip

I know this is a bit off ya'll current course, but at some point could y'all start doing mud tests again? There are a lot of service pistols from the first and second World wars, and postwar, I'd love to see get tested (Walther P-38/P1, Browning Hi-Power, Tokarev derivatives, Astra 600, Webley derivatives, C96, Makarov, etc.)

Unfortunately, even the people who do carry weapons for a living as their primary job still don't shoot anywhere near what we need to in order to be where we ought to be. Unless we take a personal interest on our own at our own expense to be good, professional Infantrymen, LEOs, and other first responders/combat arms are no better or knowledgeable than civilian counterparts unless we've been in combat. Senior NCOs like myself have been fighting this battle for years to improve training, but EO/SHARP and annual Information Assurance online training cause marksmanship and other training to take a backseat.

new to this channel, been on forgotten weapons channel for years. Sad watching this as a "Canadian regulation" rifle, handgun combo would make this match slow and difficult. (Canadian rifles are limited to center fire (+1 in chamber) 5 rounds in semi auto, unlimited in other actions. 10 rounds in handguns of any type. handgun mags that fit rifles are allowed so a 10 round ar pistol mag can be used in a rifle. 13 9mm rounds in a 10 round 40sw magazine is allowed. very abstract and confusing.) The tunnel rat would be no different however the rifle parts having to reload every 5 rounds. Watched a Canadian 3 gun match and there was 3 magazine changes (4 mags) in one portion to shoot 15 rounds, why he didn't use 3 mags I'm not sure.

I find the sight very interesting, not from a practical sense, but more in terms of function. It seems the offset based on the distance between your eyes could be a factor for different shooters, as might holding your head at a different angle (as you might prone). It would be interesting to experiment with. I might have to tape the end of my scope and try it.
