American Gold Buffalos are a top choice for gold stacking in the United States and abroad. They're a beautiful bullion coin, but they have tend to have quality issues. Is there anything you can do to ensure you receive a high quality Gold Buffalo coin? A: Yes.

I also like the rugged appearance of the Buffalo. Minor flaws don’t bug me too badly. But higher quality assurance would be nice for such a pricey coin. And frankly some state of the art security features on US Mint coins would be a step in the right direction. Best wishes!

I once stacked 25 2020 silver britannias next to 25 2021 silver britannias and one stack looked like one coin taller than the other. A side view of a Buffalo stack vs a gold eagle stack might show the bad tolerances multiplying. Or a more dramatic leaning tower of Buffalos.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 2 жыл бұрын
Odd on the Britannias. Rim differential? A stack of 20 Buffalos, all lined up consistently leans precariously. If you aren't careful, they'll topple. Eagles are completely straight. Clearly, we care more than most people or the Mint would be forced to work on it! 😅

..... I had to chuckle as I watched today. Why? not at your video or comments but at myself. I have always stuck to the RCM Maple Leafs or the Brittania's because I just have this thing for their beauty. (and lower commission) After months of watching your channel I had to see first-hand why you (and other) focus so dearly on the buffalo. So JUST two days ago I caved and bought my first two buffalos only to see your Crooked Buffalo video today. So that is the reason for my chuckle, timing! Now, I haven't received mine as they are in transit, but hoping they arrive in the BU condition I purchased but if not, well ... I will still be super pleased that I now have my own buffalo and will chalk up any imperfections to "rugged beauty". And who knows, when I hold my first one in my hand, I may be hooked as well. I actually like the standing tall "Wire rim" buffalos! In my experience, I have seen proof and standard finish buffalos with copper spots on the surface which give an appearance of a defect and can sometimes be purchased at a discount. These spots can easily be burned off with a blow torch.

It would be interesting to see the minting process in action on these. I have not seen the same on AGEs either. I assume it is something proprietary with the 24k as you suggest. I visualize machinery cutting, punching, stamping and conveyoring these things at a rapid pace and going into a bin somewhere to then be separated out and packaged bulk into armored vehicles, or just the USPS truck, or carrier pigeon. Perth Mint to U.S. Mint - "Time to step up your game!" The uneven rim on the UHR coin would make me a little bi-polar. Which pole? Well, you can guess. Glad you didn't draw blood getting that buffalo out of the cage. Good for you for understanding modern bullion as just that - bullion.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 2 жыл бұрын
I'd like to see it as well - I've seen parts of the process, but not the actual strike. The striking press either comes down in a radial arc or the die is on some kind of pivot joint. A straight hydraulic press wouldn't allow this. I blame robots. 😄

A little 1000 grit will buff that funky edge right out 😉 I just looked at my one and only and yup uneven rim. A quick google search shows people asking about it since atleast 2008 so I would imagine your reasoning is spot on otherwise the US mint probably would have fixed it…. Or maybe that is wishful thinking…

i stack a large amount of gold in my outside garage, hidden under lock and key but i never take my eyes off the garage and i always carry my sidearm. I trust no one, even family. On thanksgiving i had family over and some of the nephews were playing ball near the garage and although they were just playing ball - i had my sidearm on the ready

I prefer buffalos over eagles myself. Most of mine are proofs in mint capsules but I do have 5 BU buffalos. I appreciate the rugged looks they kinda remind me of pre 33 gold coins. All 5 of my BU buffalos have the same issues but to me it gives them charter. Besides it's still gold. I'm not sure why the mint has a hard time making them compared to Canada. I've never owed or seen a gold Maple Leaf that wasn't perfect and they're 24k gold.

Agreed. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s also something the Mint should have resolved a long time ago. Cheers!

Love the buffalo, uneven? wow. cool. Sorry about your bad luck. If you go to the US Mint's FAQ's they tell you there is not a first strike. They do not regulate when the coins were minted at all. Just so you know. Keep on stacking.

Hey CnC! APMEX gets them direct from the Mint, so they can verify the first 30 days of production. I think there’s more to it than that, though. I think they do some hand selection. Not defending APMEX, but there’s a method to this particular madness. Cheers!

Was worth doing it for the video, otherwise first strikes are not worth the extra premium, at least for me. You could see the lean on your Buffalo tower, not good enough for a coin as prestigious as that. All said and done, the Buffalo has the edge on the Eagle. Great vid, thanks.

Britannias are 999 fine. Buffalos are 9999 fine. Maples/Perth are also 9999 fine. There might be a slight problem with even that miniscule impurities for the Britannia. The "real" question is which one is easiest to sell where you are at?

Why do you think the "Mint Direct" APMEX tubes would provide better coins than the monster boxes of other dealers? They are not selected coins. The Mint Direct really only provides an assurance that the coins are not the non-slabbed returns from a normal dealer mass-grading submission. And, the U.S.Mint has put out notices that with their inventory control system even they cannot determine which coins are "first strikes"... pure money grubbing by the TPGs.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 2 жыл бұрын
The QA process is more extensive at the start of the run, and the first strike means they’re within 30 days of that start. No particular guarantees beyond that, but any dealer that understands marketing would never package random quality coins as premium. Cheers!
