Older woman here - forget a slide!!! Too much potential for problems. No corner bed!! Older knees don't like climbing in & out!

One thing that worries me is some trailers or RVs that I find interesting only come with a slide. You can't find them without one. What irritates me a bit is that everything is built or laid out to be used with the slide. As a result, if you can customize the RV to be built solid (no slide), it's going to probably cost the same if not more than with a slide! Why? They'll have to relocate a lot of stuff to free up some space.
@denisewilliamson1234
@denisewilliamson1234 2 жыл бұрын
@@largol33t1 you'd be surprised how much more comfort you get from even just a 12-in slide. It opens everything up and you don't feel like you're walking down a small Corridor of a cave. Especially if you get caught in a couple days of rain you're so much more comfortable with the space of small slide will get you. We had a travel trailer before they put slides in them and we had a full size Class A RV motorhome with two slides and it was wonderful! My husband and I got so tired of turning sideways to get by each other in the travel trailer.

Some of the most important things for older women was never looked at. As an older woman myself, we must look at features that aid us when our mobility declines. 1. Auto levelors and auto stabilizers 2. Black and gray tank dump locations...how low, how far under the edge of the rv, location of the valve pulls, etc. 3. Steps into RV. Solid? Handrails? Extra step added for lower risers - lessening the steepness. 4. Enough space for getting off the potty with bad knees...you need space to lean forward and get up. Without those things it doesn't matter what else is in the RV. You guys are fun though to watch... enjoy!

I would add also that having cabinets above those rear beds is not good. You have to crawl on the bed to access. Not easy or comfortable as we age.

I own a 2007 Mercedes sprinter Leisure travel. It does not have a slide. It’s the model with the L-shaped couch in the back. The table behind the cab seats fit 4 adults very comfortably. That table is easy to put down and sleeps two people very well. The L-shaped couch in the back has a push button so you can use it as a full-size bed which is what she would need or a queen bed. Refrigerator is three way. Which I would not own anything that wasn’t a three-way after having it. The bathroom is small but The toilet position is very comfortable. The shower is great size and has a good shower Accordion door. I have no leakage. I am 74 years old and did not want the problems with a slide but I wanted to feel of Spaciousness and this model accommodates that. The new ones are pretty pricey but you can find good maintained used ones. The quality is excellent. I have absolutely no rattles in mine and it’s pretty old. So before she buys I really think you should check out leisure travel. They’re based out of Canada. They have some very good videos of Different styles. It is a diesel engine which you probably already know but I can tell you I get an average of 17 miles to the gallon. Because I do not have the weight of a slide my freshwater tank is 50 gallons and my gray and black tanks are 36 gallons each. Also I have a good storage all the way around the outside. One of the storage doors even has a slide out drawer that I can keep the barbecue and tools etc. in and I don’t have to fumble around moving things around to get them out. Also it’s called the freedom 2 model if you want to try to find it and see what I’m talking about. Mine is all black leather. And as old as it is it’s in perfect shape throughout the whole couch. I just bought it last summer and paid 41,000. The engine had been just rebuilt and only have 9100 miles on it. Oh for the bedding I use a sleeping bag that I roll up or I put it down and put a sheet over me if it’s hot. I have not found it an inconvenience whatsoever since the convenience of the L-shaped couch with the TV there is what I really enjoy during the day. There’s also a big TV over the table area that you’re able to see throughout the coach. I hardly watch TV but if someone did both TVs are great. I hope that helps your some.

Omg thank you for this video! I'm currently looking for a class c. I've been traveling in a 20 ft Jayco travel trailer for 3 years. I'm 70 yr old and it's been a good trailer but it's also has been a pain a few times. Safety is number one where class c just get behind wheel and drive off. I definitely want a bed you can walk around because getting on knees is extremely painful even on a mattress. I could go on an on very informative video thank you given me some insight. If the bathroom door clicks into the open position, like I have seen some High Class RVs do it separates your bedroom and bathroom from people who might be going in and out of your RV helping you prepare food. It locks people out of your bedroom and bathroom cuz you don't want them filling up your black tank. It doesn't appear this one clicks into place but it is Believe It or Not a great feature if it does. Also if you camp with your grandchildren the boys might want to be able to lock Grandma out while they take a shower

Ive owned a few shorter class c's and NOT ONE of them was that easy to drive in the wind...something to think about for an older driver. The class b's are going to be better in the wind as long as you dont go after the taller models...plus they are easier to drive and park. PLUS the wider 8'3" width of class c's adds to the driving issues - gotta pay close attention to lane widths...just something to think about and whether grandma is comfortable driving these bigger models. I highly recommend for her - rear and side view cameras. and AZDEL is hands down the best sidewall material on theses rv's. And tho im a fan of Chevy trucks, I prefer Ford chassis on RVs for braking (huge deal and Fords are better)...If any of your selections are on E350 or Chevy 3500 chassis's make sure they have rear stabilizer/sway bars - I truly prefer the E450 ford chassis - beefier suspension...

Number 6 is so-so, I think 4, the Jayco! Nice all around, good price and adaptable to her needs. The bed: add a nice mattress cover and spread or quilt, cover, tuck it down. Add , folded at foot of bed, comfy blankets, quilts , throws, for warmth at night, and find pillow shams. Stays neat, fold top covers in morning, it works for me! I’m not on the road because of health, but unable to move back and legs well and have pain. Only have limited help, so I love my method with covers, in my efficiency apartment. Hoping you find perfect fit for Gramma! ❤️🙏☺️

The Thor Quantum looked so nice (They've got a lot of experience between their rental product line, Airstream and buying Tiffin Motorhomes.) There ought be a model with a center bed that would check all the boxes, might have to pay more or be longer length. Interesting that the last Nexus had ducted AC, very posh! One Coachmen model had the trio of plugs over the corner bed but for sure there's a finish problem with what you saw. And the baths are terrible. Nexus is a new brand to me, so they looked glitzy with the full body paint option but I'd like to see used ones and hear more about how they wear.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't make the bed for 30 minutes after getting up to let the sheets "dry out" each morning, but I really like a made bed. We compromised by making the bed in a unique way- we fold the covers and sheets down to the foot of the bed neatly and arrange the pillows and it looks nice, but it lets the sheets dry out.

Winnebago Outlook has a 22 with and without slides. Speaking as a widowed 70 year old, I don’t want to mess with slides. I do like a walk around bed, but those in slides are usually folding. If you stop for a nap on the road, you can’t use it. The best way to keep sheets on those corner mattresses is to use sheet suspender type hooks. A duvet fluffed up over the sheet is all you need for ‘making the bed’. You are camping, not staying in a hotel where you expect to bounce a quarter off the covers.
@dorisshanks7295

No corner bed! No slide out folding mattress bed. This is your home. You are not roughing it in a tent. You need to be able to make the bed every day you feel like doing it as it makes the space feel more open and uncluttered. An older woman needs to be able to take a nap on the bed when she feels like it. Even in a Walmart parking lot or a rest area where you are not wanting to put out the slide. 89 years old and you need to have things as easy to handle as possible. I like drivable RVs because of the security for an older woman.

I have made my bed this way every morning since Junior High: 😉 While still in bed, I grab & align the top edges of the sheet/covers, then flip them up/down to air them & get them straightened out, then pull them back up as if I am covering up for sleep. [Repeat if needed.] Once they are smoothed out, I lift the corner back a little & slide out, laying the corner back in place once I've exited. Done.😉

Having owned two 24 ft class C's, I wouldn't want any of these. I've had the dinette in a small slide, and now I have a jackknife sofa with no slide that can sleep an adult. For something that small the dinette's are a waste. The size of the sleeping area is only good for small children. What are you going to do when you're not ready for bed, but you'd like to relax and maybe watch TV. Your going to have to sit at that uncomfortable dinette. You'd be better served with a nice sofa or theater seating and a lagun swivel table, or you could have a couple of wood folding TV tables which you can store under the bed when not using. And we're 64 years old.

Never a Jayco. Our first rv was a jayco. We had it two years and it was in the shop more than our camping. It fell apart. One trip out the heater wasn't working right. Took it into the shop and they said we were lucky, it could have exploded. Doors would fall off, the storage doors under the dinette fell off. It was horrible. It was under warranty but they do not stand behind their product at all. We were so frustrated! I contacted jayco directly to see if they would extend their warranty considering all the problems we had. They said no. They offered we purchase another warranty. We traded it in for a Forest River. That was 5 years ago and we have not had a problem since. We love our Forest River. It is never in the shop for repairs.

I’m surprised y’all haven’t thought of simply adding a collapsible shelf extender next to the sink. You can make it as long as you want because it’ll fold down when not in use. I do agree the dual sinks are needed for washing and rinsing. Making a corner bed isn’t all that difficult as you merely start in one rear corner by slightly lifting it, hooking the sheet under and proceed with the others. No special sheets are needed as one simply tucks everything under. I’m not fond of the wrap around bench style dinette. One might be able to alter that to the normal dual side benches and a larger table that fully accommodates the area, which also provides additional meal prepping surface. In the bed area one can easily add a small shelf for phone and CPAP machine. And one lays their clothes out on the bed when getting dressed so no need for another table. As for windows I much prefer the full window slide open style which provides so much more fresh air flow or a full window three pane crank style. 🚌

I really feel your Mom would like a B+ RV. Remember. Once you get to your camp site. That’s it. You don’t have another vehicle to go to the store or go see tourist sites. But in a Class B+. It’s a little larger than a van, so you can maneuver to drive and park it much easier. And has room to sleep,cook and move around.

I also am 69 yrs old :) I have a 2006, with the jackknife sofa (makes into a short bed) and dinette (also a short bed). Works okay for me because I am 5'3", but not for my 6' son. Also, it does not have the cabover sleeping arrangement, which would be great for the grandkids. Also, the shorter length allows you to camp at all campgrounds, where many do not allow the longer lengths.

Just from watching this, I liked the two unplanned ones y'all looked at that had the walk around beds in them and I believe they both had porcelain toilets. I'm not fond of the slide outs either, but love the fact they do give you so much more room. So, yea, I'd go with one of those most definitely.

I truly loved the discussion. After watching Matt’s videos, this filled in a lot of the gaps that you can’t see from just watching an in depth review of a single camper. We always cook in the camper so counter and prep space are on the top of our list. Plus, I must have coffee :) Subscribed, Thanks!

Thanks for the review. Great observations! After extensive searching We bought a 2020 Coachman Orion last June. The next week we left on a five week 3200mile trip. We have previously owned 2 Class C and 3 Class B RVs, so we noticed all of the same things you pointed out. Since that purchase we have made a few modifications to remedy things we disliked, but overall we are very pleased with our Orion. No slides, great drivability, terrific storage capacity (something you often give up with slides), and it’s more roomy than the B class RVs. Great report for grandma, but just wanted to share how happy we are with Coachman.

How totally insane to pay those sorts of prices! I have a Toyota Mini Cruiser RV in excellent condition with very low miles. I have added many extras and purchased new tires and redid the roof. Recovered upholstery, though it was not necessary, did it to change colour scheme with new fabric from thrift store. Because it was built in Dec. '85, it was not subject to recall. After a good clean/pressure-wash it looks amazing, even the engine is spotless. Insurance is very reasonable. Thuere is a Toyota Mini Cruiser RV club online with many enthusiasts. Granted my RV rarely goes more than 55mph, but who needs to drive fast when 55 saves lives and fuel? Just like cars new RVs depreciate in value. I would consider a used rental RV such as those sold refurbished under the Magnetic name, and only buy one on sale. Other than that, you can't beat Toyota for gas mileage and reliability. Other than a back-up camera it has everything I need, and no credit required! I am a Grammy in my early seventies and it works great for me! One day, I plan to buy a used Airstream or similar to down size and live in, but that too will be done on a shoestring, no need to go into debt, or deal with unscrupulous dealers interested only in ripping off their customers like Camping World! Besides there are so many used RV s for sale by owner, all takes is a little patience to find one that is little used, and we'll loved by someone ready to give up on their traveling days! It is not hard to find a little palace on wheels that does not cost an arm and a leg!

Yes when I downsized from my 37’ Bounder to my 28’ Monaco TREK, I looked at the basement storage to envision my stuff in each compartment. I also looked at the dump bay to know that I could hook up and dump without help. I also was glad it was a 30 amp unit as the 50 amp cord is too heavy to manage unless on a reel. I made sure I had a shower I could safely use, a large bathroom sink and I have two medicine cabinets. In the kitchen I envisioned my cooking space. Knew I did not want an oven because the drawer space Is more important. I got a countertop oven. Plan on space for all your dishes, containers, silverware, utensils, pots and pans, pantry storage and dishtowels. Even after all this, it was miserable for the first few months as I fixed all the things that were hard to do or things to be added. Finally it felt like a home again but each continuing upgrade makes it more enjoyable. No difference than a stick and bricks, always something to do.

While cramped, crowded RV's are great for some people, they don't do it for me.. I prefer to be able to walk into a dry bath that feels like a residential shower, with a spacious front area that can be transformed from an office setting to a living room with an open kitchen that retracts when not in use and then a spacious bedroom that I can walk around in, which is why; I have decided to design and build my own conversion camper van..

I always make my bed! Those Coachman motorhomes were awful. The Nexus are nice and the Jayco was also nice. My Mom and Dad had a Coachman Catalina Class C that was really nice, it's disappointing how bad they are now. The first Nexus you looked at was my favorite. Just be sure to let your Mom look at it and drive it before buying so she will know which one she'll be comfortable with. I will have to say that Entegra also makes some really nice units so look at some of them too. My Dad drove his until he was 93 and was a good driver and always talked about how good his drove.

I agree with some of the other folks who commented, a couch where you can relax is preferable to a dinette. Some couches have tables that can be in front of the couch, making an eating area, but we only eat for a small part of the day. Having a place to read or watch a movie comfortably at night is important. Also, crawling into bed every night isn’t fun for older people like me. If you are on aspirin, you get bruises on your legs.

You are looking at the low end unit on Coachmen. Actually they use Azdel walls and construction is good on the mid and upper lines. My favorite is the Sunseeker line by Coachmen.. Especially the 3110 with the long kitchen countertop and drawers/cabinets to make cooking great. It also checks off all the boxes for an older woman.

Just watched this video on KZfaq. Enjoyed it and learned more about what to look for when I replace my 29' Winnebago Class "B+" (just sold). However, could have used more information on each one about solar, generator/power, truck driving issues, heat, access to roof, etc. Even though I'm 70 I'll still be alone managing those issues and those are more important to my decision-making than the cosmetics of the space. Thinking I'll be looking for more of a class B than these units. Appreciate you guys and will be looking for a video from you for that.

When looking at any Class B or Class C, look at the OCCC yellow sticker on the inside side panel of one of the cab doors. Highly important to have enough OCCC for someone and all their stuff. Slides are heavy causing the OCCC to be too low with most Class Cs.

I like the Coachman 22xg. Easy to get in. Has a tv hookup outside. No cabinets over the bed. Easy lift Murphy, which with most Murphy beds you can leave bedding on and still pop it up. Being an older woman I doubt your mom will be putting the bed up and down a lot anyway. I use a rv super bag which has made bed making wonderful. I had a class c, now a b. Love it’s ease. Thinking of the Coachman so I can do trips with grandkids. We camp a lot together nowadays. But the b is wonderful for even a short drive. I have my toilet, fridge, bed and can park it like a car.

grandma might not be able to climb up on that bed, you better get her a sturdy stepstool. Also check the height of the steps can she get in the motorhome? I put a mattress topper on my corner bed like that and I just make up the mattress topper, I don’t mess with the whole mattress and it still looks like crap all the time because you never can get it straight. And you really need to bring her in to let her see what she can handle & how she can climb in and out of the units and also the bed. Other than those suggestions you guys are cute as a button!!

I luv the Thor Quantum SE22 as it has more functionality except for the small kitchen sink. And the large over cab bed area is great for temporary extra storage. Your mom could opt to purchase a larger size DeLonghi convection oven with rotisserie that can actually accommodate a 10 lb turkey. I’ve one which I sit on top of a large plexiglass cutting board and place on top of the stovetop whenever I want to use it. I guess y’all don’t realize that tempered glass cutting boards actually fit across the kitchen and bathroom sinks providing flat surface areas for prepping, etc. 🚌

I would try to find a well cared for used Leisure Unity. If you’ve never checked out the quality and luxury of a Leisure Class C, you’re missing out. It may not have as much room as some of the ones you looked at the show, but considering you were thinking about putting her in one of those tiny travel trailers, they are massive in comparison.

You may want to consider the Thor Gemini, it doesn’t have the over cab bunk and it’s on a van chassis so way easier to drive. There may be more models but I love the one with the bed and dinette slide out. There is a model with only dinette slide out. Not sure of the price but quality is certainly there. Of the ones you toured I liked the Thor as well. BTW, we do make our bed, mostly because we have a dog and I don’t like her hair on the sheets, also our tt is small and you see the bed all the time. We don’t do anything fancy just pull up the sheet and duvet. 😊

Just on the do I do the bed question or not. When I have travelled in a trailer or van I have never used sheets. I just place a blanket on the mattress (to save the wear on the mattress) and then use a really warm duvet to keep warm or sleep with no covering if it is warm enough. I also have a friend who uses sleeping bags which removes the need of sheets, blankets or duvets altogether. I just smooth the duvet out when I get up, or if I am expecting visitors.

Probably too late, but I also changed from travel trailer to motorhome (I went class B). You guys are used to looking for travel trailer. Go for no slides. It makes sense in a travel trailer because you park the trailer, put out the slide and travel around in your tow vehicle. In a motorhome you end up putting the slides in and out. The slides may give you problems soon. From all the choices, I would go with the Thor. Thor makes some reasonably priced class Bs.
