First off, thank you all for the messages of support that we have received since we got back from our sail!
Last week, Ryan and I were crossing the Mediterranean Sea between Malta and Almerimar. On the 6th day of our passage, I got injured (not the nice kind of injury) while making coffee.
This video is about how I got a 2nd degree burn bigger than the size of my hand while a day away from shore, how we took care of it when it happened, and how it impacted the rest of our sail.
I share the lessons I learned from that incident, and what we will do differently in the future.
Ultimately, I’m all good if only a little bummed out about the scar I’m going to get out of the ordeal.
If you are interested in the first aid course we took, check out this link! crossinglatitudes.com/
Thanks again for all the messages of support, you guys are the absolute best!

Hi guys! Thanks so much for all the very constructive comments. Especially the ones from medics, paramedics, firefighters, NOLS instructors etc... I made this video as a "cautionary tale" for the community, and your advice made it just so much better :) Also, the painkillers I took were 2x 200mg paracetamol, so nothing fancy really! The burn is healing nicely so far, and it is in a place that will always be covered by my shorts, so it should be protected from the sun at all time :) Thanks again for all your kind words! /Sophie

Hi Sophie, what a nasty burn. So glad that you are ok. look into the benefits of food grade Coconut oil (not the cosmetic coconut oil). This is what I found very quick google search "Benefits of Coconut Oil for BurnsCoconut oil can deliver a number of important benefits for people suffering from burns of varying types and severity. This includes protecting against infections, increasing the rate of healing, soothing pain and inflammation, keeping the area moisturized and cool and reducing scarring.” Coconut oil is excellent for health including virus/bacteria infection = you can eat food grade coconut oil..upset stomach, or skin issues, bug bites etc. Plus it keep your skin looking young so you can apply it everyday. For your burn check with a doctor to see if you could put on your skin for a burn. Also, keep the coconut oil in your frig. People even put the coconut oil in their morning coffee to insure good health. The more you read up on coconut oil, you both will learn that it’s great to have on board your boat. Also eat ginger & swallow whole garlic clove for/& to prevent virus/bacterial infection. Take care. (ginger, garlic, tameric, coconut = in the old days Doctors directed their patients to take...virus & bacteria and parasite fighters before antibacterial pills came around)

I've had 2nd degree burns in a boat fire. Burns are NO FUN! I had excellent care and absolutely no scarring. Thanks for being brave and real enough to share your details. IF you have any scarring, just call it character. They certainly won't detract from your beauty. Again, thanks for sharing, thanks for the info, and above all thank you for being so real. Fair winds!

Just for clarification. 1st degree: redness, mild skin damage 2nd degree: deep red, blistering, moderate skin damage 3rd degree: severe skin damage and removal, muscle damage, charring to skin, muscle and even bone. Luckily, hot water rarely leads to third degree. Treating burns is to rapidly cool the area. Cool towels, changing rapidly to absorb the heat from the injury site. Don’t pop blisters if you can help it. Opens skin to bacteria...then rap with dry gause , soap and water to clean, if needed. Avoid sun until it heals. Info from your friendly neighborhood firefighter/paramedic.

As a paramedic you know you will never reach the site to cool the site. For us normies, Flow recent burn site with cool water. If you can't see muscle it's not 3rd degree. blisters only form after the fact. Remain calm to increase immune response. Only thing that is important is to clean the open wounds that form. Very important to eat healthy nutrients and remain calm and chill. Allow natural sores (such as burns) to breath. monitor fluid if it is clear it is healthy, cloudy is infected. Remain calm. Oxygen is very important. Anaerobic growth is not bueno. Allow the site to breath. Obviously do not disturb the natural response. Cease medications. Unless bacterial infection forms due to septicemia, apply specific antibiotics (salt/alcohol/poison prescription antibiotics). Oxygen is the true cure. Allow the body to heal. That crushes "medicine". Pressure is needed to repair severed flesh, but if flesh is severed completely such as a burn not necessary. Let it breathe and remain calm. Body response is the most important. clear puss is good. Cloudy is bad (infected). "doctors" in spain will pump you full of steriods. avoid doctors out of familial connections. My mother is a "doctor". Doctors are WORTHLESS. Unless you need a bone set. Doctors are WORTHLESS.

Glad to see you got good medical care in Spain. I saw a doctor there and seriously he was the best. Very quick with correct diagnosis. I then suffered months of bumbling along and waiting in a medical system in another country, where after 3 months of tests, mri scans and "special" x-rays they arrived at exactly the same diagnosis the Spanish doctor had made in less than 3 minutes using only his brain and the receptionits translation skills.

Burn shield gel pads are what you need to carry on your boat. Burns are incredibly painful and the burn shield helps take the “ sting out” of burns. Then if the blisters in 2nd degree ( as called in the past) but now partial thickness burns pop and the tissue is exposed you need to cover this with a silver sulphur cream to prevent infection

Ohh Sophie, so sorry for your accident. As a 50 plus year survivor of 33% burns I truly empathize with your pain. At least you won't have to endure skin grafting, another assault on the body. I'm glad you are healing, but be aware of how quickly that area will sun burn !! On the upside, once tanned the area will blend in pretty well and be less obvious. Apply lots of sun screen. That was a frightening title (and bit of video), but we're glad that you are okay . . . and that you kept your heads during the crisis. In addition to the Freddie Krueger apron, I have heard of some people using the bib-pants from their foulies in the galley (which accomplishes the same thing). Sooooooo happy you are on the mend. Thanks for the tip on medical supplies. Brett is right on as the #1 thing with burns.....cool it down as much and as long as you can. STOP THE BURN FROM CONTINUING. The antibiotic ointment (not a cream) is to do at least 2-things. #1. kill the germs on your skin in the area of the wound, that way your body's systems don't have to. #2. create an anaerobic environment (without air) so your body's systems can focus on the internal inflammation and healing. Always with a wound....antibiotic ointment (creams absorb into skin, ointments generally do not) and cover well with bandages to totally cover the wound. Initially, change bandage and add more ointment frequently than, after a couple of days, the bandage can stay on longer. Hope this ads to everyone's list to be prepared. . Sooooo happy our Sophie is well and getting better.

Adventure Otaku is right on point! As a medic i have treated more burns than I would like to count (and yes some were on me too). I applaud you guys for taking the training you did. I would hope that you refresh your training as often as you can. And Sophie you were right about the supplies. I like to compare medical supplies to Fire wood ...when you think you have enough...double it or triple it. Medical supplies are not extremely heavy, so extra supplies is not going to greatly affect boating performance. OK and one last piece of advise. Please check the expiration dates on the supplies before each leg of your journey. As a retire Navy man, I envy your journey, and look forward to each and every episode!

Wishing you a fast recovery with minimal scarring. 🧡🙏 With this experience, and consults with medical and first aid experts, I think a Tech Talk episode about how to stock a medial kit for ocean crossings would be amazing!! Not just WHAT to stock, but also HOW MUCH? And maybe a note for how to get restricted drugs in the USA ?

You are absolutely right. It won't kill you! The human body is capable of enduring fenominal amounts of abuse. On the other hand it is very fragile too. Hope you heal alright. take care of any open wounds like blisters.

So sorry for your pain. I remember telling you how smart you were for wearing the leather apron while cooking underway when I saw you wearing it in an earlier video. Someday someone we all love is going to get seriously injured a 1000 miles from help. Cooking on a rocking boat is the most dangerous thing sailors do.

So glad you guys are so cool in the heat of the moment , and make film during that moment is awsome. When i saw you on the deck just high on painkillers and adrenalin it was like Emil and the chickens get drunk on bad fruit ( Astrid Lindgren story ) . So so funny , anyway it all end well so, have a safe journey and fair winds.

Thanks for sharing Sophie, some good lessons learnt. I know that you and Ryan are very safety focused, its surprising how some of the little things we do on a daily basis slip under the radar until such an event. I cringe at some of the you tube channels where bikini clad crew are cooking or doing anything with the stove and hot water. Glad you are on the mend.

There's a lot of good advice below. For the past 70 years, I've had liquid vitamin E to put on the scabs as healing occurs. That keeps scarring down significantly. Old home cure no.101. Regards, Solomon

When you get burn, usualy the damage is done so stopping any infection is paramount, using glad wrap is recommended and if the skin or burn get hot just use water on top of it.

Silvadene burn creme, don't leave port without it. It should be a part of every offshore emergency medical kit.

That's "just" second degree burn, but having had that, on land but after office hours, I can tell you that the things to remember are to apply cold, to stop residual damage and swelling. Hurts like hell (which is a good thing, it means the nerves are intact). Silvadene is the best dressing for it, specific for burns. Boiling water is sterile, so cleaning is not critical. Silvadene is sometimes sold by rx only, but available "for veterinary use" in pet stores and online. No, that is not an inferior grade, it is simply not marketed the same way. I have found regular Silvadene (there are different brand names) on Amazon, human grade too. A blister prevents infection. If it pops, then you must consider antibiotics. There are also silver-impregnated wound pads for burns, i.e. an alginate pad, which is a soft foam pad that keeps the burn moist and sterile for 3-5 days. Any real burn center will use this. Do not allow them to use a "xeroform" dressing, that is basically petroleum jelly with a caustic antifungal ingredient. Not for typical use! When in doubt, ask a local fireman "where do you go for burns?". They know the best resources. I have had 2nd degree burns, you probably will not scar but your skin pigment may be gone, leaving white patches, sometimes for a decade. Needless to say I keep a burn kit with these things now. And I've checked this out with the head of a major burn clinic, that the county's fire departments all use. Using silver alginate pads instead of plain dressings can help you heal in two weeks instead of two months. That area needs total sunblock until the pigment all comes back. Kudos & sympathy to both of you. Ryan kept his head, and Sophie held up like a real trooper!

Thanks guys! The big tube of white ointment you see me pour liters of on my burn is Biafine, a burn ointment for first and second degree burn. That’s the best thing you can find over the counter in France. We also have a good stock of antibiotic ointment which I’m using, now that the blisters have ripped. Before our Atlantic crossing, we’ll get prescription medicine for burns (and other things), and we’ll get our hands on something better. For now, I’m doing alright :) /Sophie

@@RyanSophieSailing Find a sailing doctor to get prescriptions for your offshore kit. There will be no sympathy from the Atlantic. Anyway I am so pleased to see that you are pulling through. We were taught always wear wet weather trousers, but when it is 39 degrees they are not fun. We have a welding apron that is now going offshore next time we go. Please put the hot stuff in the galley sink too.

Really sorry to see you in such a state. It seems that the both of you have learned a big lesson and that's good and I am happy that it was, to some extend, manageable. The big lesson, among the other lessons would be, everybody on board should take and advanced first aid course before an adventure and have your medical stocks fully up to date and the shelf lives of medications correct. Hope the future adventures are happy ones. :)

No expert of any kind but did get a 3rd degree burn 50 years ago and still have the scars. Moisture is important to recovery. A burn completely dries your skin. Many antibiotics have alcohol that dries out your skin so I would be careful. My burn treatment was more like a jelly that never dried out and kept the skin moisturized. The other thing that you commented on was an inadequate trauma kit. Plan for multiple traumas over multiple days. Always need to be able to change bandages for multiple injuries multiple times a day for multiple days. A bleeding trauma needs pressure so that means many wraps. Be safe and thanks for the videos.
