#2ndGenTacoma #OverlandBuild #BudgetTruckBuild
In this vehicle walk around video I give you an in depth look at my 2nd Gen Tacoma Overland Build. I have been working on this TX Tacoma Budget Truck Build for the past year doing my best to pick the most important vehicle upgrades to make this vehicle capable of taking me where I want to go and make my experiences in the outdoors as enjoyable as possible.
The 2nd Gen Tacoma Off Road Truck in stock form is already a very capable truck. I think we have made the best 4x4 modifications to take this truck to a whole new level of capability. I also think we made some great decisions on what overlanind gear for beginners we should outfit it with to make our time in the outdoors fun and memorable for our adventure family of 4.
This family overlanding rig is ready to go and I hope that it helps motivate and inspire you to build a budget overland rig of your own. As much as i would love have the Tacoma outfitted with all the best gear the Overland industry has to offer, I am truly lucky to still have it given the reality of what our small business faced in 2020. This year taught me its all about the adventure and the gear truly comes secondary to that (though the gear is really great too!).

I'm surprised to see the rear shocks with the reservoirs. I have a 2013 TX Pro and mine only came with the same suspension as the Off Road package. I thought the reservoirs and red TRD springs only came on the TX Baja package. I think you may have gotten an unexpected upgrade! I wound up replacing all of my suspension with OME to support the added weight.
@alpinetactics
@alpinetactics 3 жыл бұрын
@@sgrisez it might be the Baja edition. I removed a giant Baja decal from the truck when I got it. I didn’t know there was a difference between the two 😂 because it also had a tx pro decal. Which I removed as well. It’s definitely good enough to get the job done but I plan on upgrading the suspension eventually as well.
@sgrisez
@sgrisez 3 жыл бұрын
@@alpinetactics sounds right. The Baja was the pre-TRD Pro. It was the TX Pro style package with the upgraded suspension. Also looks like the previous owner replaced the tailgate with a prerunner tailgate. Prerunners are 2WD and the TX package only came on 4WD. The Baja package also had a nifty red TRD badge on the tailgate that were expensive to replace. Either way, you've got a nice truck! I also added the Decked system and have a soft top for solo camping and RTT with a bed rack for family camping.

@josephc6648 yeah if you get a well maintained one chances they will go even much longer then that. If you get one that hasn’t been taken care of you might have some problems though. I have owned two second gen’s and have just done standard maintenance with them and I have only had a single check engine light and that was caused by a modification I made. I would bring a scan tool to check for codes, verify there is no frame rust or strange sounds. Also check the vehicle records and ensure it was well maintained. If you can ask them if you can pay to have a mechanic look at it even if it’s a Toyota dealership.

Great video & beautiful truck! I got a 2015 with similar camper top. Great info on the mods. However I was disappointed that u didn't give a total cost on the build. Your title says "built on a budget" but then for you not to give the budget seems a little dishonest. The whole reason I clicked on the video was to see the mods and total cost. Even a general ball park I think would have been very helpful. But overall quality video.

Hey there Gerardo! I’m glad you liked the video. I did mention if anyone wanted to know in the comments and so far your the first so let’s do it. I can definitely break down the add ons I made. Baja Design Fog Lights $350. Falken Wildpeak Tires $1200. RSG rock sliders $800, Snugtop Windoors $600, Decked Drawer System $1300, Icon RXT Leaf Spring $700. Besides buying the truck that’s everything I put into it. I kept my camper shell from my 2008 Tacoma. And besides the modifications above everything else about the truck came 100% Stock. I defiantly consider this a budget build in comparison to what the average overland build looks like. Down the road I would like to do much more when I can afford to. Thanks so much for watching and reaching out!

Most models do say pre runner. It’s the original TX series. If you watch the entire video I explain most of the features it comes with as it relates to suspension. Tacomas hold their value so well, what do you think is the sweet spot for mileage? like getting a reliable truck but not over-paying
@alpinetactics
@alpinetactics 3 жыл бұрын
Yes no matter what a Tacoma is going to hold it’s value well but as a buyer I think it’s important to take some things into consideration. I bought this truck with 133k miles on it which is something I wouldn’t normally do. I did that because mechanically everything seemed to be in great condition and it had a an excellent record of service at the dealership. This is my third Tacoma so I know when well taken care of they can be very reliable for years but it’s hard to say what a sweet spot is because a well serviced Toyota with 150k miles on it is much more reliable then one with 50k miles on it but hasn’t kept up with regular vehicle maintenance or maybe has been driven really hard. I was looking for a truck with under 50k miles on it but the price on this truck was right for me and the service records gave me the confidence to go ahead and move forward with the purchase.

I used a D Ring Strap Hanger but a super thin and lightweight one. The strap has 4 holes and is only about 1 1/2 inches in length. I wanted to use something super thin so I could use the anchor points that were already installed on my roof track system. It’s so thin that it doesn’t interfere with the nuts holding on the track system. I can’t recall the part number but I got them at Home Depot and could send you an image of it if you would like.

Building on a budget just means you have a certain amount to work with based off of what their personal needs and finances look like. Should go without saying but that is going to very from person to person. I sold my 2008 Tacoma that I bought in 2010 and with what I got for that I put just a little bit more in to get this one. I have spent the last three years slowly building this truck out with the budget that I have had to do so.
