I really appreciate the blend of games and active teaching with mom, plus having the workbook for independent practice. One thing I like to recommend, for parents who are worried that it may be too gentle is 1) Remember that the mathematical thinking is actually quite deep, so you can't really judge the curriculum by the challenge of the independent worksheets, but also 2) Don't worry too much about sticking to the grade level on the cover. My son has a natural interest in numbers and thrived using Kindergarten Math with Confidence for his PreK year,--so...choose by the level that fits your child versus the number on the cover (and that principle applies to pretty much all curriculum--pick the level appropriate for your child!)

But in planning for the new year, I looked into the two programs recommended by The CMEC and got distracted like many homeschool moms and started wondering if there was something better out there. I literally just bought Apologia Math 2 for next year and I love how it looks and it reminds me a lot of Math With Confidence because each lesson starts with a game and then there is a page of practice for the student, but every time I look at MWC now I think I should go with that.

We have done the good and the beautiful math for kinder and have one more unit left on level 1. My kiddo has enjoyed it because of it being hands on and having games and the manipulatives, however I am not a fan of the spiral approach of it at all. I think it makes it hard for my kiddo to fully grasp a concept. So often I am having to explain things to him beyond what the instructions say. He has told me before that he likes the math, but they don’t explain it well and that mom explains it better 😂 I think we are going to give MWC a try for level 2. I will miss how affordable TGTB is since all we have to do is buy the math box and can print the pages for free.. but it’s not worth it if my kiddo isn’t fully grasping it and getting a deep foundation of basic math.

I'm exactly where you are! My son is about to finish Level 1 tgatb and he enjoys it. But I'm really intrigued by MWC because it is mastery yet spiral too. I wonder if TGATB is conceptual enough and if MWC is better with that. I hate to give up TGATB because it is so beautiful haha!

I am super interested in Math With Confidence for my kindergartener ( for this fall). It seems to have the things I am looking for BUT I am wondering how parent intensive it feels to other math programs. Sounds like it might be doable but I am nervous of it being “ too creative .” Does it feel like a reasonable demand on the parent and not like there’s too much “stuff” they are having to get out all the time? I love games for learning ( my daughter has gotten a good foundation for reading by doing games!) but was just curious about this. Also does any one have kids who get super distracted by these creative school games? My daughter vibrant imagination gets going in an unfocused direction! Sometimes in our preschool counting we have had to really work on “ no you can’t play that this is a family of beans on vacation until we are Done with the lesson! ”. I know that’s all part of the learning process with young, imaginative little people but wonder if it might be harder for some creative kids?

Hi! I absolutely LOVE Math with Confidence!! I feel like it’s the perfect combination of parent teaching and independent work for the kiddos. I don’t feel like it’s too parent intensive at all. The script is pretty basic, with just the right amount of fluff….in my opinion. I think the examples they use are just right for the kids to apply the concept. And if you feel like you need to skip through something, I think it’s doable without feeling like you’re missing out on anything. The warmups are great for remembering those math rules and concepts. I feel like there are other curriculums that are A LOT more parent intensive than MWC and have too much fluff….which I don’t like at all. I have used Kindergarten, and am currently using 1st and 2nd grade, and my kids ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! They love the games. My kindergartner already finished his Kindergarten level and I went ahead and purchased 1st grade level, because he really wanted to keep going. As for the materials……I also don’t feel like it’s a lot. What I did was, I went ahead and created a math kit using the list provided. So the manipulatives that are most used, I already have them available whenever we start. I don’t feel like I’m running around the house looking for stuff in order to complete a lesson. I also look through the lessons in advance just to make sure we’re good to go for the next day. If we’re using toys, I just tell them to go get them. But I’m specific about it. If they have to be small toys, I tell them to specifically get small toys, and I give them an example if they’re not sure. For the masters, I went to the well trained mind website, printed them out, put them in sheet protectors and have them all in a binder. Just because I didn’t want to mess up my instructor’s guide by ripping them out and was too lazy to photocopy them😅 Also, I don’t think we’ve ever taken more than 30min to complete a lesson. Unless we play the games 5+ times lol😂 As for the kiddos getting distracted……I think I can safely say……we’ve all been there😆🤣 We just need to guide them to understand that ‘school’ can be fun, but it has to be taken seriously. And as you said, we can play ‘the game’ after we finish. I 100% recommended MWC!! P.S…I’m already excited about 3rd grade coming out in June!! I think I’m more excited than my kids lol. That’s how much I love it! Hope this helps! Happy Homeschooling!!

I think it is the perfect amount of parent involvement that I have found! I've used several different kinds, and this what the most manageable and not overwhelming, but not too little either. Right Start was too much, Masterbooks Math was too little. You can adapt the lessons for your kids too, like do less or more of the games. As far as the creativeness, I don't think it was too creative! My boys have learned math so well from this! They have really good mental math skills. The games take 10 minutes or less. I would HIGHLY recommend this for creative kids, actually!

How would you compare this to Right Start Math. We're currently in Level A with my 1st grader. He loves the games, and is a very tactile learner. But the lessons seem to take too long. I've started using a timer (bcuz I do agree with CM that lessons should be short) and then just cutting off the lesson when time is up, and continuing the next day. He enjoys math, but I do hear a lot of "I don't get it" and he shuts down when things don't come easy for him.

I have this in my cart for my rising kindergartener and 3rd grader. We have tried others too... sigh! I was settled until... duh, duh, DUH! I watched a couple reviews of it being to complicated and time consuming and too many pieces and moving parts. Help! I have 4 kiddos to homeschool and all the things. Will this be all consuming? Thanks!
@JoyfulNoiseLiving
@JoyfulNoiseLiving 11 ай бұрын
I'm so sorry it sounds overwhelming! That's a bummer some other families thought it was complicated 😔 To me it's just two parts: I sit with him for the lesson plus we do a game together. Then he does the page by himself. As far as the moving parts, that was made better by putting everything we needed in one container, I have it sitting right next to where we do our math lesson. I just pull out the little box and it's ready to go. You may need to prep a bit BEFORE you start school at the beginning of the year. And for each lesson you don't have to do EVERYTHING. you can shorten things if you have busy days and can't get to it all. If you child is getting something quickly, have them only do part of the individual work, or combine a lesson. If you do some prep before school starts, I think it could essentially be open and go. It won't be open and go if you don't do the prep at the beginning. Do your older kids have self-directed math? That may help! I have been doing two kids at a time for math lessons. It takes some time, but it's just a part of our normal school day.

I've got a daughter with special needs. She is still learning, just severely delayed... Do you think this could be a good fit for her? I've tried at least 5 different curriculums for her. She needs something with mastery but also good review... I'm at a loss.
@JoyfulNoiseLiving
@JoyfulNoiseLiving Жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry you are having trouble finding a good fit. 😔 That must be frustrating. I feel like this is a mastery based math, but does include review for each lesson (in the warm up and in the workbook). Maybe try a level lower from where you left off, and go at a slow and steady pace? This is very hands on and games based, so I do think it helps make those abstract concepts more concrete for those kiddos who struggle.

Yes! Definitely!! Math with Confidence mostly has the meat of the lessons in the teachers guide. The student workbook really is just practice for what you do from the teacher’s guide. In the teacher’s guide is the lesson, the memory work, the game instructions, and the book list for the picture books that are related to the topic for each unit. 😁

I can’t speak to Singapore, but we’ve used three different math programs and the mental math element of this program isn’t like anything I saw in any first grade program. We have only just started MWC2, but the strategies seem harder to me than the average first grader would do.

@@kb8990 It’s deceptively simple and we tried it. I did drop it as I was overwhelmed teaching four kids math and I didn’t see what it offered. Then we languished in another curriculum for an entire year making little progress. I just picked it back up a month ago and we are making astounding progress with Math With Confidence. I teaches a child how to think mathematically and also shows them at the same time. Couldn’t be happier and wish I had stuck with it but I was just too overwhelmed by a lot of things and couldn’t wrap my mind around it.

@@LearningPlantingGrowing Was it too much planning from the teachers perspective?? Like having too much to pull out to teach the lesson?
@LearningPlantingGrowing
@LearningPlantingGrowing Жыл бұрын
@@jessicaladd85 No no not at all it actually takes only about 15 minutes to teach. The program only takes some counters like bingo chips or cheerios etc, a deck of cards, pattern blocks and it also takes a few printables. I put the printables inside a dry erase pocket and that’s all there is to it. Kate even wrote it to have printable manipulative in the back of the book if you need them. The problem I was having was more to do with overwhelming chronic illness and feeling unable to do any part of my day really. Most everything in our home was falling to pieces and I just couldn’t get it together. Now trying it together in a better space, we all love it! My math every single day with tears daughter announces at least twice a week that math is her favorite subject lol. So for now it’s working! I even discovered this week I can teach it to my 6 and 8 year olds at the same time :0)

I am leaning very heavily towards Math with confidence for 1st grade next year. How would you say the curriculum is paced? Meaning my son is just 4 but he’s advanced in math. I mean he loves all things math. He’s currently doing kindergarten math and flying through it but I’m holding back because he’s 4. Would you say the 1st grade curriculum very gentle but effective or kinda behind (masters books style no slam on Masters-book math is too gentle for us)?
@JoyfulNoiseLiving
@JoyfulNoiseLiving Жыл бұрын
I think if he is advanced in Math, 1st Grade may be the best fit for him. My son was the same. I had him do the Kinder math, but we started halfway through the book and he did like 4 lessons a day. As far as compared to Masterbooks, this is a step up from that. It's still not very rigorous like Saxon or Horizons, but it's not as gentle as Masterbooks. I wouldn't say 1st Grade is behind. Just mostly based on games and less worksheets.
